This vintage golf club is brought to life with an incredible restoration. Tune in to see the surprise transformation of this Ben Hogan Power Thrust.
I have a junk pile of clubs that I use to practice my technique. In the junk pile was this 1961 Ben Hogan Power Thrust 9 iron. I knew it had potential, but had no idea how beautiful this was beneath the scratches, dings, and rust. My new favorite!
Grab your favorite beverage and watch this satisfying full iron restoration!

I bought an entire set of these last summer. They're the last model JFK played. Although his were sold at auction and purchased by the Govenator, I've always wanted to restore them. I'm stoked you gave an example on here. Once again, it's an amazing video!

Love the videos brotha! Just won some cash at a golf tournament this past weekend so I think I'm finally going to start dipping my toes into this type of project. Couple of questions for ya if you have the time to answer: 1) At what point in the process would you metal stamp the club head? Like after polishing and before electroplating or just as a last step before paint fill? 2) How many uses do you get out of the Nickel Crystal & Brightner solution? Can you store this stuff on the shelf for a while and use it again? 3) How durable are the electro plated coatings? Can you game these irons or is this more for the sake of art? Thanks! I'd honestly love to see a video where you walk through your current tools and processes. Just to see what works for you and things you changed and learned since you started.
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 года назад
Thanks, Alex. In my opinion, I'd stamp the club after you sand and do the sisal wheel (right before you start really shining it). This way, if you introduce more scratches while you're pounding on it, you can take ONE step back and clean those up and not be back to square zero. The nickel solution can be used forever provided you keep it clean. What is used up is the nickel anodes themselves, who are feeding the solution and get eaten away. You will have to add more distilled water to keep the level full. If you were to let all of the water evaporate, you'd be left with the dried nickel salts you started with. Jury is still out on the durability. I'm an 18HCP, so my friends and I are going to make a video where we take out a few clubs and see how beaten-up they get. Certainly not as durable as chrome. Finally, your video idea has been on my mind for a while now. I'm thinking of doing a multi-part series of every step including equipment set-up in detail. Almost like a DIY class series where I can explain all of the things I've learned including tips and tricks. What are your thoughts on that?

Lovely as always. Glad the channel us gaining traction, you're really earning it! Any reason you choose nickel over chrome? I'm curious about durability.
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 года назад
Durability is less than chrome for sure. Chrome carries so much additonal safety and cost concerns that I chose this. I'm still just a dude in my basement experimenting, so I'm open to try new stuff. Caswell sells a Copy Chrome which is nickel and cobalt, so it's harder than just the nickel. I may try that

Great results as usual. Is there any issue such as thinning or ridges with the plating where the head is in contact with the cradle or does the aeration move the head enough to form gaps for the plating form?
@BradMeehan
@BradMeehan 2 года назад
In hindsight, the cradle isn't ideal. I haven't noticed any thinning, but that doesn't mean it's not occurring in microns. The aeration may juggle it a bit or it could shift enough when I'm checking it. Ideally I should hang it by the hole of the hosel with the toe pointed downward so nothing is touching it. I just need to buy a taller container. If you're considering doing this, I'd say go with the latter approach. I'm going to make a video on "tank maintenance" so I'll address it there.
@kenjones480
@kenjones480 2 года назад
@@BradMeehan I bend a piece of copper, Crimping it with vice grips small enough so it fits snugly in the hosel. I then create a hook on the other end and hang it off of the copper pipe. That really minimizes the number of times I have to touch the club head when I’m wearing the gloves. Touching the clubhead even while wearing gloves have left imperfections for me.
