Yep, those 4’s and 6’s disappeared.Back in 1971 I had a ‘64 with a 3 on the tree that I paid 25 bucks for, yanked out the tired 6 and stuck in a 283 -4 from a wrecked ‘62 wagon. Added shackles and fatter tires, flex tube dual exhaust with glass packs. Had a nice stance with the mildly jacked up rear end. Nice to have a friend that worked in a boneyard, total investment was about 100 dollars

This is an amazing Chevy II and pretty rare these days. Hopefully you will find someone who will want to restore it to original and not just hotrod it. Thanks for sharing your find. I learned more about these neat little cars. My aunt had one and my dad and uncle hauled it to the crusher years ago. It also was a running when parked car and was not really in that bad of shape if I remember correctly.

Brought back memories. When i was a kid in the 70's a 90ish Lady, retired school teacher drove one identical to that one white, 4cyl.,power glide. I was facinated by the car because of it's size and the 4cyl. It was probably around 15 yrs old then and immaculate as a school teacher would keep it. And yes she dove it to the church i grew up in.

This was very interesting. My 1st car was a 1962 Chevy II 2-door sedan, but base model, not the 300. It was originally a fleet vehicle (from the local telephone company), and had this 4 cylinder engine and 3-speed manual trans. It was a great 1st car back in the late 60's. I hope this one will be saved and kept as original as possible.

I worked at a Chevy dealer during High School and then took two years of auto mechanics in a vo-tech school and worked at the same Chevy dealer for a while in the early 70s. I was really shocked at that 4 cylinder. I never even knew they had a 4 cylinder available until the Vega. Very interesting find!

GP well put together story. I know a little about Chevy II's. My oldest is a 1962 Chevy II 100 4-door 194 six 3 speed. Left KC plant Coronna Cream fawn cloth vinyl interior. Mine also was built 11D. I wonder how close they are in production. 1962 hood hinges are 1 model year only. I was told by a Chevy II parts person he's never seen a 62 where the hinges worked properly. Maybe why it was a 1 year only hinge. Front end is 1 year only also. Mine came from an auction in Valdosta GA years ago then driven to upstate NY and sold by a used car dealer. Then lucky me bought it! I don't believe mine had as much rust as yours does. Not being synchronized in first takes some practice at stop lights and hills. Wish mine was a Powerglide. It would be interesting how close their actual build date is. I agree they are early production, and the low series are rarely kept. I look forward to how your handle your II. Thanks for the story.

I had one of those Tim. Mine was even a cheaper model devoid of the side chrome , windshield ,and rear window chrome, no radio, three spd. standard, with the four cylinder. I had all the parts for a v8 conversion, but I just couldn't do it so I sold it. It only had single speed wipers with no washer.

Pretty decent car for sitting out like that. Fun project! Looking forward to the "will it run" and clean up vids. If I had any metal working and welding skills (I don't), I'd pound out some sheet metal patches for the front fenders and rear quarters and tack them in. Sling a little bondo on it, spray some primer and call it good. It will still go with the patina of the rest of the car. That one will be a fun cruiser for not a lot of money. Although some hotrod guy will likely offer you big bucks for it so he can drop in a small block (insert eyes rolling here).

Most "car" people don't understand how rare that 4 cylinder engine is, much less the general public. They look like the standard 235 6 cylinder but with 2 cylinders cut off. And that grain truck looks to be a '63 according to the fender badging, even though it has a '62 style grille.

Yes, hopefully someone will restore it back with this unique 4 cylinder, and not put a 350 crate motor or an LS in it, and it's history and uniqueness lost forever...The '62 grill was a one-year-only, and I like it better than the '63-'64 grill..and the '63-'64's seem to be the most common years you see of the first rendition of the Chevy II..the '65 is actually my favorite year out of the original body, followed by the '62..too bad they didn't make a convertible '65...and the '66-'67 are very well done facelifts of the original, very beautiful cars.. :)
@mr.goodpliers6988

It's hard for me to notice much difference between the 62, and the 63-4. In my opinion the 65 was a hideous, bug-eyed monstrosity. How they ever let that mess out of the design studio is beyond me.
@dyer2cycle
@dyer2cycle 2 года назад
@@mr.goodpliers6988 ..Well, I actually think the '65 looks best..would love to have a '65 SS L79 :)..or, a '66-'67 one would be nice as well..the difference between the '62 and the '63-'64, is the grill is quite a bit different..the '62 has the horizontal bars, with the larger horizontal bar in the middle..the '63-'64 has the same shape grill, but it is a big crosshatch/mesh/small eggcrate affair..makes the grill look too big to me...

The cowl tag having the wrong engine designation was very common on the Chevy cars of the time. Something to do with the body being built prior to final assembly by Chevrolet. Even into the 70s, it was not uncommon for the cowl tag to designate a V8, whereas the car was originally a 6 cylinder. The VIN info always overrides the cowl tag.

I worked with a guy who with his wife worked at a assy plant way back. He told me of one day he went to pick up his wife at the end of her shift . She was so drunk that she walked right by past their car. To lots of drinking along the lines. Could explain the tag.

Dang, I could have been able to use the 4 cylinder a year ago in a 72 Vega GT that I had. You can bore them out and run 327 10to1 flat top pistons and get the cam custom ground. They make an awesome little engine. Reliable, not like the Vega motor. Good luck with the Chevy II, I hope you do something with it. Or sell it to me for what you've got invested already... 😁Pul-Eezz!

That six number is common. It's a Fisher Body number. I have seen many with V8's and 4's with that six digit. A friend restored exactly the same car, with the 4 cylinder that had the digit for a six also. That four banger is used in boats too. Very common in Mercruiser powered smaller boats. They're extremely durable engines.

Neat find! Hopefully it'll live on as is, but odds are slim there. So I noticed something on the trim tag, which is the low body#(1454). I'm thinking it's possible that the style # is mis-stamped. As you noticed it's an early car, built in late '61. Sometimes those mistakes still got through- that plant(or tag maker) may not have had their codes down yet. Not that it's worth chasing, but the only way to prove or disprove is via a build sheet, which I doubt would exist in that car given the mice factor. Being as the engine bay is so unmolested, I'd bet the tag just got stamped wrong. Hope it moves quickly for ya!

Couple of things, it's a two door hard top not a post. Also if you have the ignition key that same key unlocks the trunk. Pretty spiffy grille work, shows what just a little effort can accomplish. So I'm guessing when you talk about data plate confusion (03 vs 04) you know this car to be original as is and no engine swaps? Curious if it is yes. Gm was on a major backpedal with the corvair at the time realizing the rear engine wasn't going to compete with falcons and darts. 18 months was light speed in analog production days. Neat find
