Should have removed rods from crankshaft, and installed new bearings. Much easier to unite the piston and rod to the jugs and install as a unit it, like the shop manual says. I admire your hard work!
I really didn't have any clue what I was doing at the time and was just figuring it out as I went. Good thing it had after that. I appreciate your comment!
If You ever have your heads off again it would help the Cooling of your engine to knock off all the excess aluminum In the fins that was caused in the casting. Creates a smoother flow for the air. Also since you want to add AC to it again. Removing the lower shrouds in summer also helps to move the air better. A spare valve cover cut slightly less than half installed allows for you to adjust the valves while it’s running. You could do it without but oil would pour out everywhere.
Good stuff, I'm thiiiiiiis close to taking my heads off and seeing what kind of damage I have to deal with after realizing I (i think) have a head gasket leak. Really appreciate the videos, I sit and watch every one.
I used to work at a quarter shop years ago how to use that method all the time the difference is I would take a 2x4 laid across the top of the cylinder and give it a whack with a rubber mallet it go in sometimes it'd be a little bit harder but that's the way it works
Silicone valve cover and oil pan gaskets are best for the Air-Cooled Corvair. Not the lower temp water pumper gaskets thrown on by Chevrolet and Fel Pro.
I'm commenting before I see the next video. That noise sounds like your "tappets" needs adjustment. You called them rockers I believe. Nice to see that major work can be done on the engine without completely removing it from the car.
I appreciate what he’s doing, but there is a lot to know about building a Corvair engine. I can’t tell if he really has experience and he’s kinda playing along or is really winging it?
At that time, I had some idea of what I was doing but I some how managed to bet it back together and it runs well now! Plus I'm young so how much experience could I really have? First old car I've really messed with and learning from the mistakes.
@@benbencorvair9071 You need the heat shields no matter where you live. Very important! I put a post on Corvair Center forum how you can cut them to get them on without taking the heads off. Make sure when you adjust your valves, the pushrods are in the lifter dimple.
I noticed that too. Made the same mistake on my first Corvair (50 years ago!) Yes, you need them. Also, I noticed your two idiot lights did not light up when you went to start it. I also agree with Don Herbert that the whole job would have been easier by just pulling the engine. Looks like a pretty nice car, though!
It will never work! where all going to Die!!!!!! that is the sound if your engine could talk, why do You insist on doing it the unethical way? as Spock would say simply illogical ! carry on & remain calm. Seriously did You ever find the book ( how to keep your Corvair alive ) not Frankenstein it's alive!
