The Chrysler slant 6 and the AMC I6 series engines used in these cars, (optional 6), were both bullet proof. The AMC engine in various forms (232, 258, 4.0) was built for 42 years, the slant six, 41 years. I have two AMCs with 232 engines, I love the six and will take one any day.

The Rogue was available with a 290 v8 and 4 speed trans later in the year. Some even later series had a 343 V 8

I've owned four AMC cars with vacuum wipers. All have worked flawlessly. The big difference from electric is that vacuum systems need to be maintained. The fuel pump boosters can weaken, hoses can leak, the big motor itself has seals that leak over time. Maintain them well and step on the gas, they go faster. I had a Ford, however, that had a tiny vacuum motor and no boost. The wipers would fly back and forth only when the wind blew them up off the windshield.

Rambler offered a dual-circuit hydraulic brake system, like Studebaker and Cadillac. What about Valiant? 8:05 detailed instructions on how to dispose of a body?

They did. I once owned a Rambler classic in the early 90's while in high school. They worked, just not well.

Vacuum wipers were a feature, you could always see where you were going to drive while sitting at a stoplight, the challenge was to use just enough gas to maintain the vacuum while you were driving once you left the stoplight. It was both a fuel saving reminder and a driver challenge to see it you could remember the road ahead well enough to drive, two unique AMC "features".

+Marco Polo true! My dad even offered to help me convert them over. I liked the challenge. AMC's engineers were geniuses. You know how much gas I saved by taking that challenge?! By the 1960's I found it hard to believe it was still a cost saving option.

They were on 1968 models as well. At least they were on my '68 AMX. AMC ran their wiper motor with a dual action mechanical fuel pump, with a hose going to the wiper motor. Worked way better than Ford's for instance, intake vacuum version. With AMC, the faster you revved up the engine, the faster the wipers actually went, a little.

The vacuum wipers were used on base models. I owned 5 AMC cars and all had electric wipers.

love these video's!! the Valiant and Rogue were both really "Elegant" looking cars, so much more impressive then anything from GM or Ford., I'd be very happy with a Signet with Commando v8, 4 speed trans, with ALL options, in that really sharp Copper color with a Black top

My first new car was a 66 Rambler American, They do not mention that the Valiant cost about a grand more than the American, a big difference in those days. I had the 440 Trim package on the 2 Door Hardtop. By the time it made it through all the family it had over 300,000 miles on it, with no major mechanical repairs. (Water Pump, Alternator, Carburetor, and of course replacement of normal wear items, clutch, brakes, wipers etc. Mine came with the Vacuum wipers, but I changed to electric from a wrecked Ambassador at a Junk yard. It was an easy bolt in replacement. The car came with the electric washer already. In fact I do not remember seeing any that had that pump style washer system. The American also had a 290 V8 option on most models and there was a high performance model with a 343 V8. There were some outright lies in that commercial. I was working as a mechanic at the time and just noted in Wikipedia that they do not list the 290 and 343 V8 until 6. They list the 287 and 327 engines, but those were dropped in December 65. All V8 equipped Ramblers made after December 65 were equipped with either the 290 or 343 V8 engines.

@@gerardtrigo380 Great information! Yes...the American was a great deal - underrated like so many other AMC designs. Nash and AMC engineers suffered under some staggeringly arrogant and short sighted management...for example, the Metro was a lost opportunity - saddled with closed fender skirts (poor turning circle), no trunk lid, the brilliant wagon version was shelved...could have crushed the Beetle!

I liked them both. When I saw a Rambler Rogue in Gold and Black with the 225 horse 290 V-8 and a four speed, There was no contest. Attention to detail: the Rambler is a Rogue, not a rouge.

Chrysler was focused on performance, especially acceleration performance, and that led to a number of drag racing victories. I was a broke college student when these cars were new. Had I been buying a new car and spending my own money, I would have bought the Rogue with its free-revving 290 in a Gold/Black color combo.

the rambler had smoother lines, nicer grilles...We owned a1973 Argentine IKA Renault Torino TS two door based on the rambler rouge body, it had an aluminium straight six and two barrel carb, real woodgrain interior, leather bucket sets, short throw 4 speed, front grille similar to an Alfa, back like a BMW. That car was wicked fast and it rocked! EPA wouldn't let me bring it back to the States! Their GTS model has three carbs!!! We bought the Torino TS new back in 73.

Man, this is great!!! I had a GF that grew up with Ramblers. Funny that when time arrived for a new car, her Dad bought a Mopar (Dart, i think, '72). Seems like splitting hairs when looking at $32.00 as price point. Its all relative. A year before this was taped i saw a StingRay with a sticker price of $5500. Seemed outrageous to an 8 year old kid. Heck, so did $300 for a Stratocaster. Money was worth something then.

We owned a 67 Valiant and bought a brand new 72. And I mean my parents did 😅 but the 72 was my car in 76 during high school years because my parents bought a 74 Vega 😢 and the 72 sat. My brother drove to 72 about 6 months ,memories!

I have a '66 Signet convertible with 273 v8. Rambler was a good car too, but the profits on compacts had become thin and AMC needed to develop larger and more cars - even when they didn't want to, or hardly could afford to do that. AMC's new v8s were pretty good - I think those came in '67. AMC was scrappy, I admire them for hanging in. Without AMC, I wonder if Jeep could have survived because in 1970 Jeep wasn't the premium brand that it eventually became. There was no bidding war when Kaiser decided to sell Jeep to AMC in 1970.

The Falcon had a big disadvantage before it was even released. The price was set before the engineers had come up with their first design, and it was one of the few absolutes when deciding what could be built. I've read that they went to McNamara with the pitch of "for only $10-$20 more, we could...". He told them no every time. On the upside, his stubbornness allowed Iacoca to push for a slightly more expensive model with the same underpinnings. And we got the Mustang.

The new 1966 Falcon was better, but bigger and far more modern except for the automatic transmission of the valiant and the 225 cubic inch slant six having much more power than the 200 cubic inch Falcon six.

I like all of the sixties U.S. compacts. If only they could have forseen how popular European sports sedans would become during the 1970s "fuel crunch". The U.S. makers didn't attempt to hide the economy nature of its compact cars because marketing execs told them that Americans wouldn't pay much more.

Anyone know if AMC still used the torque-tube drive shafts in this model? Bend one of those and you had a horrible time trying to get the car to run straight down the road again. An parking lot drive over a car stop or sliding the car in snow would be enough to bend it.

My 66 American has a Borg Warner T-3 3 speed auto trans. Had it for 40 yrs., never a stitch of trouble. The 66 Rogue could be had with a Warner Gear T-10 4 speed manual trans., a Typhoon 290 V8, and front disc brakes proving that much of the info in this ad is false.

For automatic equipped cars AMC began using the Torqueflite ( a very good transmission) in 1972. Hudson and Nash used Hydra Matics until 1958 and used Borg Warner transmissions in the intervening years.

The Canadian 66 Valiant was a better-looking car than the US version. Canada received the rebadged US model Dodge Dart, which bore the name "Valiant" without any other brand identification. My family had the 66 Custom 200 two-door hardtop in metallic bronze, with the 273 V8 (180 hp).

I was too little to know much about these 2 cars but I know they were both very good. The rambler was better looking and I think the coil springs were better. The trunk opening advantage seems to go to valiant, however, knowing Chrysler, it probably was at the expense of body integrity. Steering ratio advantage goes to valiant. Does anyone know if the rambler was a better riding and driving car?

Safety didn’t sell as well back then, although that was the car companies’ conclusion, that doesn’t make it a completely accurate conclusion, it probably was that seat belts, for example, only netted them $5 of profits on a car, whereas deluxe trim packages made them much more profit per dollar spent. They did mention brake lining square inches, which correlates with stopping power.

Suprisingly the Valiant had optional disc brakes back in 1966. Not the norm for an economy car back then, or even higher up models for that matter.

@@TheOzthewiz Sure, but on premium makes like Mercedes, Porsche, and Volvo among others. A basic workaday car like a Valiant to have them was an anomaly for that time period. I own a 1967 Oldsmobile Toronado, top of the line for Oldsmobile and even that unfortunately only has four wheel drum brakes.

@@barnabyjones6995 AMC Rambler offered front disc brakes on Classic, Marlin and Ambassador beginning in 1965. Dual master cylinders were standard beginning in 1962. Your Toronado, (a beautiful car), had front discs optional for the first time in 1967.

My Rambler American has a 450 horse Chevy LS engine and 6-speed transmission, that tops the Valiants optional V8 4 speed transmission.

Funny how later Chrysler bought them out I had a 71 gremilin with a 232 6 and a tourqe flight trans it was fast just with the 6cyl . Both were good cars and made well I never seen a water cooled transmission or they talking about how they use the lower radiator tank to cool the fluid ? I changed the trans in the gremlin with a later year 74/75 and it was air cooled .

George Romney, president of AMC, famously said, "the only race we care about is the human race." The 1964 Rambler American revision was the company's last chance to design a platform which could have offered competitive performance to the big three V8 compacts, and this anti-race philosophy meant they blew their last chance. That platform was used all the way to 1989 under American, Hornet, Gremlin, Concord and Spirit, because there was no money to revise it after the lost opportunity in the '60s. The Rogue, like the earlier American 440 hardtop, had cleaner styling than Valiant/Dart (especially in '64 - yikes!) and looks less dated today. But the writing was on the wall once the muscle car era got into full swing. AMC later built some competitive cars, but the econobox image persisted, and the dealer network was slow to embrace performance. The quality of the bigger cars fell off badly after 1966. AMC fell behind and never caught up in sales. I had two Rambler Americans, both '68s, a two-door sedan and a four-door wagon, both with the 199 and automatic. They were great little cars, always reliable, fantastic heaters, legitimate room for six inside. I also had a '68 Amabassador SST with a 343 4-barrel which ran quite well. I wish the company had survived. I loved those cars!

Actually, George Romney didn't say that. An ad, run only once and in one magazine, bore that remark in the headline. Of course, the reasoning neither existed nor answered the question. Ramblers did not compete in NASCAR because NASCAR was for 7 litre engines. Rambler's largest engine was a 5.3 litre and plenty powerful for most drivers and buyers who often bought smaller motors in other brands without complaint. Further, NASCAR at that time required a stock wheelbase of 115" and the longest Rambler in 1964 (when the ad was run) was built on a 112" wheelbase. Later rules changes made it possible for AMC and, even, Toyota to compete in NASCAR and they did so.

I don't know why you would consider a much smaller brand the competitor. Better off going after the Nova. The AMC is better looking. I own a '65 Corvair so what do I know.

I'd just like to say that BEEP! I'd go with the Rambler if BEEP! only because I always BEEP! root for the underdog and BEEP! AMC was always fighting against the Big Three. BEEP! They put up a good fight, but in the end it was just too much for them, I guess. It's a shame, really. PS: BEEP!
