This 1968 Porsche 912 coupe is one of the better classic cars that we've run across. Troy has done an exceptional job with this Porsche project car and after speaking with him we know it is good hands and will be preserved for future generations!

In my opinion, this owner has it figured out perfectly. Fun historic car, maintained well and properly and used as intended. An honorable and worthy steward. Cheers

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this video - I enjoyed every moment! I'm a massive fan of Porsche cars and that is a beautiful example of a 912 and (in my opinion) all the better for not being a pristine garage queen, though I nearly wept when I saw what the previous owner had done. Kudos to the current owner for his approach to restoring the car, keeping the original paint (great job Dad) and making it into a usable car to enjoy. May you do so for many more years to come Sir. After 45 years of wanting a 911 (since I was 8 years old) and having spent the past 10 years battling an incurable cancer, I was finally able to buy myself a 911 in February this year - it's a joy to finally own one. It's put a smile on my face every day since I bought it and I'll continue to enjoy it, as long as I can. More power to anyone who shares a passion for Porsche - whatever model, age or condition. May the road rise to meet you.

I have a 69' 912 and absolutely love it. Mine's a bit more outlaw than show queen (her name is Gertrude)... She's kind Frankenstein with a 68' engine and a 71' trans. It's a bit wonky when I first take it out for the season, but once the rust is off, it's a dream to drive.. Mine's not perfect, but it's mine and I'll keep it running til I die.

Soooo if he ever goes to sell it how might one get in that short list??? Love that he has that average guy enthusiast vibe about doing the best he can but also daily driving and not sweating the smallest stuff - that's exactly what I'd die to have a 912 for!

Great stuff. My kind of owner and as I drive a slate grey swb 912 myself I certainly agree with most of his observations. Minor gaffs only - the 1969 912 was a lwb car and the steering wheel would've been the 68-73 style wheel with a build December 67. But the 67 wheel looks great and I would leave it there. You can go too far with originality, yes you're the custodian, but it's still your car , and you are part of its history

A couple finer points. The 1974 912E was different in the respects you mention but the engines was completely different than the 356 derived original 912 engine. The 1976 engine was the 021 Volkswagen bus engine as used in the last 914s. That engine was full of troubles and short on character. A wise person once told me that the 356 derived 1.6 was what the VW bug engine would have been if it wasn’t built down to a price. The 356 cylinder head with its splayed valves and uncompromised rocker shaft mounting is a work of technical art. Point is the 912E was more compromise and less pure Porsche. The 911, on the other hand is way too sophisticated to be owner maintained, the sophistication is justified by the outcome but it’s in a different class than that original 912 by nature.

The information about the model years of the SWB (Short Wheel Base) and LWB (Long Wheel Base) is incorrect. The SWB 911 and 912 were built up to 1968. Beginning with in 1969 Porsche stretched the wheelbase by 57mm on the 911 and 912 which was the last year for the 912. In 1976 Porsche sold the 912E which used the fuel injected 2.0 liter Type 4 engine from the 914 and was only sold in North America for just the 1976 model year to fill the lineup until the upcoming 924 was released. The 912E was built on the same long wheelbase chassis as the 911 and featured the updated impact bumpers front and rear that the 911 had used since 1974.

And crucially ALL that weight loss , compared to the swb 911 comes off the very back of the car ! Well unless you count the early 911 needing lead weights in the front bumpers or disguised as 2 front batteries ;) I had an early 911 2.4S , I kept the fuel tank full but it was still rear heavy. Need to clean up some of your details. To begin with the weight was not just under 1600 pounds but rather 2134 pounds. Secondly, you failed to mention that the 1976 912E engine was not only fuel injected but was also from the 914 2.0, and with L-jetrontics FI, replacing the earlier 1.6 liter 356 engine.

Pal of mine had his 912 burst into flames within 6 months of owning it while driving. Burnt to a cinder. Are there big issues with the wiring and gas leaks? I’ve been offered a beautiful 912 but asides from the fact that it looks beautiful the inside of these look very basic and although I’d love to be convinced I just can’t get over the line. Is it a nice drive?
@zonoscopePictures
@zonoscopePictures 2 года назад
In my opinion, any old car will potentially have wiring (harness integrity and bad grounds, etc) and fuel line issues. Fuel hoses should be replaced with ethanol resistant hose, and the tank and lines should be inspected very carefully. I carry a fire extinguisher in my 40 year old 911 and hope i never need it. Basically if you are going to own a vintage car or bike you probably will want to know how to work on them , if for no other reason to know how to fix it on the side of the road , and to prevent things like fires from happening. I don’t think Porsches are any more likely to catch fire than other cars, in fact they are built to very high standards, if you ask me.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German. :-////)/)/

@@zonoscopePictures Biggest problem China and Pakistan dictate the end of use of all combustion cars worldwide. Its not about the environment....Chinas boss Darth Xi and Pakistans Boss Darth Larutumbrlulli told our EU politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic, aircrafts, ships or combustion based industry after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China into 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China.... They seemingly have no problem limiting freedom of speech, controlling the Mainstream media, rigging elections, using 3 letter government agencies against the people and their political rivals, allowing illegal aliens (future Democrat voters) to invade the country, allowing certain demographics ( their voter base) to commit crimes with little to no punishment and paying them not to work (welfare)!!! The Democrat party and lunatic leftists (white liberals, too indoctrinated by radical universities to question the idiotic ideology) are destroying this country!!!

The "MOST" over priced classic in the World. Ive owned a few of these. There is NO WAY a 912 or 911 is worth anywhere near $100,000.. or even $50,000. Unless you really 'LOVE' your 912, dump it now, the classic, collector car market is collapsing. For several reasons. 1. The economy stupid... 2. The younger, up and coming are not 'connected' to these vehicles, unless their dad, or grandpa owned one. but still, these cars are not their passion.

Interesting response, but, it is only your opinion. Many of us are not keeping 912's or any classic car for that matter, as an investment/asset, but to enjoy till "time runs out". Is the collector car market "collapsing" because the media tells us so? Maybe, but who cares, unless you are into any classic as an investment. Does Jay Leno keep his cars as investments? Not! It is his passion! There will always be a market for a classic!

Instantly you would have a classic sports car with the iconic look that could get in the ring with every 911 from the same era...and win easily. But what happened? The prices for 912 went up like crazy, like before with the 911. Too bad. Would love to tell my younger self to buy each and every 911 and 912....
