I couldn't find any videos on replacing an ignition switch, so I made a one. This should work for early Bay Window VW buses, 1968-1971.

Thanks for the video, but I suggest adding the year of your bus in your title. I was looking for removal of ignition switch & lock cylinder for 1975 and later buses. It would have saved me and most likely others time with looking for another video that would help R/R my ignition switch & lock cylinder. ✌️ and Fahrvergnügen!

Thanks. After carburetor choke coil was grounded the fan housing after an engine reinstall, the ignition does not turn off. Must have fried to contacts into a direct short. Will replace switch. There is now constant power to the coil and the battery light is on with the engine off.

Thanks this is a helpful video as I think I might have to change my ignition switch as I'm getting constant power to my coil even with the key off.

thanks so much! I needed this. My 71 campmobile is starting randomly, then not starting at times. I will hot wire until I get a new ignition. Thanks!!! I also have a good bit of videos if you want to check them out. Great job!

Is it possible to replace the switch without having to take the steering column off?

H3mp H3ad I replaced the switch in 30 minutes. Not sure what all these videos op people taking apart the dash or removing the dash is all about. I only removed 4 screws to do this. Remove the 4 screws that affix the column to the dash. My ‘72 only had 4. Once removed, sit in your seat and pull the steering wheel back towards your stomach and the everything from the floor up to steering wheel will tilt back. The tilt point is where the tube meets the floorboard. Keep in mind the wires will only allow about 6” of travel, but it’s enough for you to see the switch if you look upwards as if your head were on the floorboard. My column was missing the bracket that affixes the tube to the floor so it made it easier. I’d think you can loosen those with ease. You don’t have to remove the lock cylinder to remove the switch. So no need to fashion a wire or drill a hole to push the release button. This is necessary if you’re trying to remove the lock cylinder, but I was only replacing the switch. You’ll see the switch by looking upwards and it simply twists on and off. It’s tight, but I can probably do in 10 minutes if needed to do again. The switch wiring is pretty straightforward as my ‘72’s wiring has not been hacked. Oh yeah you don’t have to open the dash or instrument panel. There wiring connections are accessible from the bottom. Hope it helps. Maybe I’ll do this again and post it as my 1st video.
