To be offered on Bring a Trailer at NO RESERVE!
Vintique Motors is thrilled to present this 1973 Pontiac Grand Safari 8-Passenger Wagon!
Offered from 1971-1978, the Grand Safari was Pontiac's top offering in a station wagon and was also the largest and heaviest Pontiac ever built at just over 19ft and 5,300lbs. They were offered standard with a 400ci V8 or with an optional 455ci V8 and additionally they used the grille and interior trim of the Bonneville and Grand Ville passenger car series, and most examples were trimmed with woodgrain paneling on the sides and tailgate. The revolutionary full power-assisted "clamshell' tailgate design, marketed as the Glide-away Tailgate, made access to the rear cargo area easily accessible. The rear power-operated glass slid up into the roof as the tailgate slid into a recess under the cargo floor.
This 1973 Grand Safari was assembled during the 3rd week of October, 1972 in the Southgate, CA assembly plant and is finished in code 60 Valencia Gold over code 575 Beige. It is well equipped and features the W-Code 455ci V8 that produced 215hp mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. All the systems work well aside for the A/C as it is currently disconnected, and it runs and drives fantastic. The only modification in place is an aftermarket center console that houses 2 cup holders and an aftermarket stereo.
It was sold new at Stevens Pontiac-GMC in Los Gatos, CA and delivered with 162 miles on June 6th, 1973 and subsequently registered in San Jose, CA. It would spend the next 12 years with the original owner before being sold on June 14th, 1985 to a gentleman from Fort Worth, TX, with a reported 58,642 miles. It was purchased by its third owner from Sunnyvale, CA on August 1st, 1987, followed by its fourth owner from Broomfield, CO 26 years later on August 23rd, 2013, and finally by its fifth owner from River Forest, IL 7 years later on November 14th, 2020.
Accompanying the vehicle are records from new in 1973 through 2020 including SMOG checks, maintenance receipts, annual California registrations from 1973-1985 with first owner and 1987-2013 with third owner, and some copies of past transaction documents showing ownership changes. Additionally, all the original books, manuals, keys, and owner's pouch are present. Do not miss this opportunity to acquire such a rare and unmolested example of an iconic American station wagon in a phenomenal color combo that is well documented from new.

I grew up in the "rumble seat" of our family's '72 Grand Safari. Cumberland blue with the starfish-style rally wheels. It was ordered by a customer without the woodgrain siding but for some reason they didn't take delivery. After stopping at the Pontiac dealership, Mom and Dad took to its sporty styling and forgot all about that Mercury Colony Park that Mom had her eye on. They were offered a good price and drove it home that day. I remember being 5 years old, waiting on the porch for them to get home, and seeing "Big Blue Brenda" pull into our driveway for the first time. She hauled our tribe all over the greater PA-NJ-NYC area and far-flung vacations out West and down to Mexico. She once, in a pinch, accommodated 13 cub scouts and 2 nerve-frazzled den mothers. Thankfully, it was a short trip. That disappearing tailgate was a real boon when loading up the week's groceries at Pantry Pride and we kids thought we were such hot shlt at school drop-off because we had such a nice car. Tears were shed that day in late '77 when Dad backed her out of the garage for the last time. Our new Olds Custom Cruiser was easier to park and more luxurious, with its rich velour seats, but it didn't have the same character. For months I'd look for "Brenda" in traffic, but she was never seen again.

My Dad had that exact same wagon. Grand Safari, 1973, same color and everything. Brings back memories. I forwarded this video to him too. Thanks!

You may want to check the tracks on the lower tailgate for debris. The motor that drives the lower tailgate is under the driver’s side cargo area side cover. The key lock should be able to raise and lower the tailgate window. You may want to take a look at the lock switch. The motor for the tailgate window is in the spare tire well. I once owned a 1973 Impala wagon with the same tailgate setup.

The key at the rear will operate both glass and tailgate. Turn right and left makes both open and close.

That's one hell of a wagon. I remember seeing them on the road back in the day. I think Ford had a tailgate that opened like a door and could also be tucked away into the floor, but it was manual. I may be mistaken.

My father had one of these, or something very much like it. I thought it was cool, like the van used in the 1979 made-for-TV "Captain America" movies that had power rear doors that would open, allowing him to ride his motorcycle out the back.

My Mom had that same Grand Safari . Power gate was problematic but worked ok. It was cool as a 17 yo tto cruise down expressway putt the car in neutral and open up the Clam.....

My uncle had one of these on his Pontiac wagon. Too bad that you'll might never see these on a new car again?

Interesting! Why didn't they make the key open the tailgate AND the glass? It's not like you can get much under the glass anyway.

They did. The key is supposed to operate the glass as well. Turn to the left for glass , and turn to the right for tailgate door. My friends had a 73 Caprice Wagon with the same set up. Key operated both tailgate and window

These tailgates are pretty complex but really cool. I currently own a beautiful 76 Caprice Estate and the tailgate and window combination works like new. I do grease the tracks occasionally but not often as the car is garaged and only taken out on nice days. The rear keyswitch works as follows.. turning the key to the clockwise position (right) 1pm raises the glass, 3 pm lowers the gate and 5pm opens both... Counterclockwise.. 11pm closes the glass, 9pm closes the gate and 7pm closes both. The 2 switches up front can operate the window and gate if the ignition is in the run position. Window will work any time.. tailgate door will operate only if the gear selector is in the Park Position. He must have a problem with the rear key switch??

Just take it down to the local Pontiac dealer and they’ll fix it😊

They'd still be looking for where to plug in the OBDII.
