The Biggest money makers of 1974 in the movie world were :
1. Blazing Saddles.
2. The Towering Inferno.
3. The Trial of Billy Jack.
However the Godfather part 2 was released at Xmas 1974, I am sure if it was released earlier in the year it would of taken the top spot.
Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks released 2 classics this year in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. The usual hardmen were back - Clint Eastwood with Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, Charles Bronson with - Mr Majestic and Death Wish.
Disaster movies were big this year with The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Airport 75 and Juggernaut. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre shocked the world and down the line will be remade numerous times. So too were Burt Reynolds - The Longest Yard , Albert Finneys - Murder on the Orient Express, Walter Matthaus - Taking of Pelham 123, James Caans - The Gambler and even Death Wish , Gone in 60 Seconds and The 4 Musketeers. The very first film of John Carpenter ( Dark Star) was released. Steven Spielberg had his first cinema release (2nd Movie) with The Sugerland Express. Roger Moore was back as James Bond in his second outing with The Man with the Golden Gun.
Tarantino favourite Sonny Chiba arrived with a bang with The Street Fighter series. It was a popular year for Blaxploitation movies with Willie Dynamite, Black Godfather, Sugar Hill , Three the Hard Way and Black Belt Jones. The women were getting some payback also with Foxy Brown, Policewoman , Savage Sisters , Gator Bait and Caged Heat. Other Movies worth a mention were Chinatown (Jack Nicholson) , The Conversation ( Gene Hackman) , The Parallex View ( Warren Beatty) , The Yakuza ( Robert Mitchum) , Freebie and the Bean ( James Caan) and The Great Gatsby ( Robert Redford).
I wasn't born in 1974 but as of 2023 my top 5 Films of 1974 are ( No particular order) -
The Godfather 2,
Freebie and the Bean,
Death Wish,
Blazing Saddles,
Young Frankenstein.
