1975 Ford Elite & 1978 Mercury Marquis Brougham Junkyard Finds. Two for Thursday. One of the local yards just brought out these two mid to late 70s Ford products. The first being ol Eddie, the 75 Ford Elite that's nit so elite anymore. It was instead quite holey on account of vinyl top rust. And yes it was pretty bad. Although it was pretty much all there with some good parts like the optional gauge cluster with tachometer, the rust was pretty bad on this one. The MacDaddy 78 Mercury Marquis Brougham was in a little better shape. It appeared to have come from Louisiana and that roof top rust didn't disappoint on this one either. The interior on this one was very nice compared to ol Eddie's. I was really digging the spoke hub caps and fat white wall tires.

True. Crappy carburetion, sloppy steering, poor build quality, poor fuel economy and generally old and tired designs let GM sail right by them. In 1978, Ford touted that they had not downsized their big cars, and in 1979 they did just that, meanwhile GM had done so in 1977, as explained here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u43ZYNZ63nQ.html

I had a '78 Grand Marquis in the late '90's, but that crate was grand in name only. About a month after purchase, the trans failed. I got that fixed, then about a month after that the 351 knocked itself to death on the way to work. Yeah, the title said "Mercury", but it was Found On the Road Dead.

My uncle and aunt both had 1o75 Ford Gran Torino Elites, his was brown with tan interior, hers was a hot pink color with red pink interior. Loved to ride in em when I was a toddler. That Elite and Marquis can be rescued, and put on the road again. Wish I had to dough to do it.

Things rust so much differently here in Canada. It’s always the rear quarters, rockers, and maybe lower front fenders and floors. Vinyl top cars will show a couple bubbles, but I’ve never seen that kind of decay on the roof or hood. Weird.

The 1978 model year was the last year for the 460 V8 in passenger cars.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 3 года назад
That is correct. The biggest you could get in 1979 was the 400 V8 two barrel, VIN code "S" engine. This one has the last of the breed, VIN code "A" 460 V8 with four barrel. The Motorcraft carburetors were a bad ripoff of the Holley of similar design, and were equally as inefficient and troublesome. LOL.
@bobbyheffley4955

@@googleusergp Ford and Mercury cars were downsized for the 1979 model year. Lincoln was still large (it was downsized for the 1980 model year).
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 3 года назад
@@bobbyheffley4955 I know that. But if you listen the interview that the Ford rep gave to Bob Mayer, he clearly makes reference to the Ford and Mercury models being downsized in 1979, a full two years after GM did it. He explains, 'They have their product cycle and we have ours". Probably somewhat right, but Ford was always behind the eight ball in the 1970s.

Whoa Nelley, two Fords, oh my Lord. Here we go: We got the VIN, we win: 5 for 1975 model year, G for Chicago, IL assembly, 21 for Ford Elite 2 door hardtop, H for 351 V8 with two barrel and the rest is the production sequence. We got the tag, we can (somewhat) brag: Vinyl means vinyl top equipped, AB should be blue interior, possible 3G Dark Blue Metallic exterior paint. We didn't get the tag from the door jamb area (should always get that and the underhood tag) which would tell us the transmission and rear end ratio/type. No, I think the wide whites blush out over time. That happened to the whites I had on a '79 Toronado parts car. They did just what they did on this car shown in the video. We got the VIN, again we win: 8 for 1978 model year, Z for St. Louis, MO assembly, 64 for Marquis Brougham four door, A for 460 V8 with four barrel and the rest is the production sequence. The Hazlewood (St. Louis), MO plant closed in 2006 and made mostly big cars and later on trucks when it closed. When this car was made in 1978, the plant had been in operation since 1948, over 30 years. We got the tag, we can brag: 7L for paint is Light Jade Glow Metallic exterior paint, DR is for green interior, DSO of 26 is New Orleans, LA sales district, 53K should be Marquis Brougham four door body style, VR trim should be green, 12D for production is April 12, 1978 production which was a Wednesday, transmission of U is C-6 automatic, A/C of A is factory installed (complete with a competitor's, i.e. GM/Delco A-6 compressor). 1 for 2.50:1 rear axle ratio, non-locking. My neighbor had a '75 Elite that was originally yellow/tan and then became a dark brown eventually. It was a 351 like this one and very thirsty. It rode and steered like a sack of potatoes. LOL. We used it for a few years to go pick up parts and then I think my neighbor sold it. He had it a few years. Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd would wreck a copper colored Gran Torino on Labor Day weekend in 1976 spawning the song "That Smell". Terrorist Timothy McVeigh was stopped by Trooper Charles J. Hanger in Perry, OK for driving a 1977 version of this car without a license plate (oddly enough, it still had the original dealer name plate from Fort Lauderdale Lincoln Mercury in Florida where it was sold new). Hanger is known as "Straight Shooting Hanger" was said that he would give his own mother a ticket if she violated the law, he was that by the book. When he arrested McVeigh, he supposedly said, "I have a gun in my waist and it's loaded". Hanger said, "So is mine and I'll use it if you do something stupid, so don't". The day after he arrested McVeigh, he saw the APB on the news while eating breakfast with his wife and realized who he had jailed. Good thing he called up the jail, they were about to release McVeigh (who was eventually executed). Hanger is now Noble County Sheriff Charles J. Hanger and has won every time he was up for election. Reportedly after blowing up the Murrah building, McVeigh reportedly muttered "Dirty for Dirty" to himself, which is is a line from Bad Company's song "Bad Company". It was said that his actions were in response to what happened at Ruby Ridge. Whoa Nelley, this Elite is now a heap. Nobody beats the Biz (Marquis), and this one is no whiz. Green and no longer mean. 351 and it's done. 460 gotta go. Going to be flat and that's that. Big Daddy Mac, going to get sacked. In rust we do not trust. Going to get squished, not really too pissed.

In 78 at the time this Marquis was made, I can't see why anyone would have bought a Continental for 3 or 4 grand more. The full size Continental's interior had gotten so cheapened up by the end of it's run so there was literally not that much difference anymore and the Mercury looked just as nice. Powertrain wise it would have been identical and even had the same GM Harrison A/C compressor as opposed to the old York units that Ford used to put on everything other than the Lincoln.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 3 года назад
@@kennethsouthard6042 There was enough distinction to keep the brand and similar models going I suppose. I'd have to think the Ford brands outsold both by landslides all though you got the same components. More features were probably standard on the Lincoln as well as more color and trim options. A Lincoln buyer didn't want to be driving a Mercury or Ford.
