These are the Oakland Raiders my father rooted for. He told me stories about Stabler, Ray Guy, The Tooz. I also learned about earlier Raiders like Lamonica, Ben Davidson, and Blanda. Rest easy Dad!
Vin was the absolute best at calling baseball AND football. Long live that short stint in 1981 when it was Scully and Madden on CBS. That's Heaven in your ears.
Fred Biletnikoff was always fun to watch. He wore no pads from the waist down and the tiniest shoulder pads, all to allow him to move better. His play was impeccable too, with his signature “come back to the ball,” after passing the first down marker, giving Oakland the yard’s needed to keep moving the ball. And let’s not forget his red “stickem” he wore on his socks. Every young boy in NorCal watching football wanted that same stuff during neighborhood pickup games and during Pee-Wee league games.
@@jvk9445 He got tired of the traveling by plane, he gave up flying and would have his Madden Style bus and travel across during his years as a broadcaster.
Madden’s situation is very ironic to Sabin and Belichick: Shockingly unexpected. Back then we didn’t know that John was afraid of flying and how much the Daryl Stingley incident impacted him…🤔
Grateful for your sharing this. I attended this game as a kid. I didn't realize until years later that it was coach Madden's last game. The television doesn't show it, but all game long the Raider secondary would push, shove, and taunt the Viking receivers in between plays.
Tarkenton was masterful in the 4th quarter. Both with his calls, and his throws. But the first quarter hole, for the second year in a row, was too deep to dig out of for the Vikings.
I've played. That's a coin toss catch. Raining. Defenders hands all up in your hands. Awkward positioning. Very easily should have been a missed catch, so it was.
Wow, I guess somebody knew something in regards to these high impact players to the success of the raiders playing their last games as well as head coach madden deciding to retire.
The greatest receiver in Raiders history catches a touchdown pass in John Madden’s last game Ironically, this would also be Fred Biletnikoff’s final game in the NFL as well
I remember this game on TV I was nine years old my mom is the biggest Raiders fan and I’m the biggest Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers fan all the way back to 1969 how did it happen that my two teams ended up sharing a stadium in Oakland leaving California but having a mom that’s a Raiders fan I’ve had to figure that team and franchise out at a very young age
This Raider team had a lot of young guys who would end up winning the Super Bowl in 80-81 and a few that would still be around for the 1983 Super Bowl... This 1978 season was disappointing but there was a lot to look forward to in its immediate future... I remember this game when I was EIGHT YEARS OLD, and I remember being PISSED that Madden wouldn't be coming back... LOL And what was Al Davis thinking benching Belentnikoff for Morris Bradshaw... All ownership EGO... SMMFH
Yeah for Allen to say that wow, most fans already knew he was using a substance to assist with him catching the ball 🏈 by time this game was played, lol 😆
@@phineoustrout2899what really stands out is the double fullback set. Hubbard had retired but Van Eaghen and Banaczak continued the system. Smash, crash and two yards of broken bones
Carl Eller and Alan Page's last games with Minnesota, but I can't remember if they were released or traded to the Seahawks and Bears. That left Marshall and Sutherland for a few more years.
I believe Page was traded to Chicago so he would be close to Minnows where he was pursuing a law degree. I think Ellet was released and signed with Seattle. Marshall played one more year in Minnesota before retiring.
For lst time since 1971-1972 season Raiders missed playoffs/this was also late Johnny Madden's last game as club's head coach. Meanwhile, Vikings would face off against Rams in playoffs for IIIrd successive season/IVth time in 5 seasons. They dueled against each other in N.F.C. Div. Playoffs on New Yr.'s Eve, 1978 (December 31, 1978-Sun.) in L.A. Coliseum w/Rams coming out victorious, 34-10 as they outscored Vikes 24-0 in llnd half after 2 teams were tied at 10 all at halftime. And w/that win they earned home date with defending Super Bowl winners from season prior (1977-1978), Cowboys in N.F.C. Championship Game, but after scoreless lst half by both teams, it would be Cowboys in llnd half as they outscored Rams, 28-0 in half No. II enabling them to Super Bowl, XIII where they'd lose 35-31 to Steelers
was that the real background music at the beginning, wth? Jefferson has great voice for broadcast, and if I had not seen him on camera I would have sworn that Allen was Dick Vermeil. Not sure when Allen retired from broadcasting, but he doesn’t sound well. I can see adding Brown to help Allen along, and hopefully to give Brown some exposure and experience as he was outspoken and insightful on many topics of the day in addition to football.
In the late 70's into early 80's, Scully did work for CBS late in the NFL season, after baseball was over, including playoffs. He would be their #2 play by play guy behind Summeral. Probably didn't do many Raiders games because they would have to host an NFC team with the right kind of match up to get the CBS #2 crew.
I like that he could be sharp tongued. Van Eeghen got slaughtered on exhausting run. Next play they give it to him up the middle for nothing. Scully says why would they do that to him? Not smart. Jim Brown pipes in and says "Runners sometimes run better when they're tired." Ok Jimmy.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL & I MENTION Y'ALL ON RAIDER NATION RADIO ALLLLL THE TIME!!!! GREAT JOB!!!! CAN YOU UPLOAD THE GAME VS. baltimore FROM LAST SEASON?!?! RAAAAAAAAIDERS!!!! #RAIDERNATION #COMMITTMENTTOEXCELLENCE #JUSTWINBABY 👑🏆🏆🏆⚔ -"GANGSTA' RAIDER"
With Green Bay losing to the Rams ….Vikings won the division at 8-7-1….GB was 6-2 and blew it ……Eagles beat the Giants ending up 9-7 taking the wildcard away from GB
