Thanks for this GR - very well done - I was on HMS Antrim, thankfully we didn't sink but our main weapon system was totally put out of commission by an unexploded 1000 lb'er. Ardent, which I saw burning nearby had my best mate from school on board, she was hit by about 17 bombs - he somehow survived the sinking. Rapiers took too long to effectively setup on the first day. All shipborne radars didn't have Moving Target Indication over land, this was something we had retro-fitted afterwards and being in such a small body of water is not the 'natural' place for these ships to be - after all, we were an anti-submarine asset for NATO to guard the Greenland Iceland Norway gap (Antrim was originally a Carrier Group Escort). So similar to the brave Argentine pilots who didn't know what to expect until they popped over the high hills surrounding the Sound, we couldn't see them until they appeared in the sky there. - I sometimes speak with a veteran Argentine pilot from that engagement and will pass him a link to this video. Once again BZ very well done.

Argentinian bomb fuses were not designed for low altitude attacks, just imagine if the bombs they dropped, actually exploded, the story might be entirely different.

Argie here! Today is My birthday and for me this is a gift. The start of both attacks gave me chills, from the Daggers and then the Skyhawks. Those pilots are my real life heroes since I studied the war by myself (In the school they thaught us political BS, so we feel sorry for our soldiers, and not proud). This reenactments/play is like the movie we Will never have about those pilots. Thanks a Lot and keep it up the good work!!! Respect for all the fallen, from both sides.

The cloud model is a bit up the shit for 25kft as you break out. There isn't Altostratus (As) and Stratocumulus (Sc) up there because these are mid level clouds. Cirrus (Ci), Cirrostratus (Cs) and Cirrocumulous (Cc) is what you get up there and Cumulonimbus (Cb) tops when there's thunderstorms. The way it is there's cloud layers going beyond 40,000ft ffs!. Depending on latitude there isn't much cloud over about 30,000ft perhaps the occasional Ci or Cb top. I almost sicked up at this monstrous inaccuracy. For the love of god someone let the devs know before I have a brain aneurysm.

I just had a great idea cap! Another skills competition! If you remember not long ago you did the Carrier Landing Challenge where it got progressively harder to land. What if you did the same sort of challenge but with mid air refueling? I foresee a lot of chaos with this challenge and it sounds like great fun for the boys (and girls) at GR. Round 1 : you could give everyone 3 passes to attempt to refuel. No wind or special conditions like weather Round 2 - 2 passes some wind but not a lot. As well as minor human interference from the tanker. Round 3 - 2 passes, wind and light weather (such as light rain), mild human interference. Round 4 - 1 pass high wind and severe weather such as storms, up to you for human interference here. Round 5 - 1 pass (highly unlikely anyone will survive this one) insane levels of wind and severe storms, maximum human interference. Feel free to modify this formula to how you see fit. Have a great day cap!

Great mission - really brings home the challenge for the Argentinian Airforce - and actually quite realstic, when they flew high they did get shot down. The Falklands map is really impressive! Just to point out that as was mentioned in the debrief the targets that were the most valuable were the landing ships. However the RN knew this and deliberately positioned the escort vessels (warships) in the most vulnerable positions so that any attacking Argentinian aircraft would have to fly over them to get to the landing ships - that combined with getting hold of absolutely everything they could (strapping machineguns to the ships rails) made them by far the most likely to get hit. The job of the escorting warships was to get the ships and their cargos safely ashore so whilst the loss of Ardent and Antelope was a definite blow they did their job protecting the landing (like bodyguards jumping infront of a bullet).

well some sidenotes as for realism: Most important thing is that it was a gret mission, really close to the real thing, main limitation is the game itself... 1) Lack of Daggers/Mirage5 only left you guys with the option of using Mirage 2000, a way more advanced aircraft with a much more powerfull engine 2) Game does not mod malfuctions. In real life on that scale of operations malfuctions in both aircraft and air defense systems does play a role 3) ingame Rapiers and Sea Darth are way more lethal than 1982 version of the system. I think those systems are modded after later versions, versions that were indeed upgraded after the 1982 conflict due to the mediocre results protecting airspace against semi-obsolete strike aircrafts 4) a bomb hit does not equal a bomb exploding, a lot of Argentinean bombs were duds due to the low altitude drop problem. i'd say 1/2 bombs were duds in the attack, so you get a somehow historical outcome of 2 ships sunks out of 4 hits 5) i was expecting a 25% to 40% aircraft downed... 100% down its not realistic but what can you do except reducing air defenses (only 1 rapier, no stinger sq) and live with getting 75% aircraft downed

Argonaut was hit by rockets and MG fire from a MB-236 trainer launched out of Stanley airport then was hit by 2 UXB's off A-4's in the first major wave from the Mainland. She was in San Carlos water doing ASW patrols. Antrim was damaged by cannon fire and hit by a UXB that quite literally ended up in a Toilet!!! She was in Falkland Sound and acting as the Anti Air Warfare Control ship. Brilliant and Broadsword were both Strafed by 30mm Cannon fire in Falkland Sound. Ardent had been to the south of everybody else, supporting an SAS raid on Goose Green, operating in Graham Sound. That was where she was sunk. Antelope wasn't there on 21st. She didn't get the Falklands until 22nd May and was sunk the next day. Rapier was not operational on 21st May at all and the SAS fired 6 Stingers for one kill.

Having just finished reading Rowland White's "Harrier 809" this hits the spot nicely! Not a bad effort, but thankfully, it was less of a disaster IRL (for both sides), I hate to think what the body-count would be for today's effort. If the rapiers were taken from the equation (as they were) and sea-dart (in-)effectiveness was more realistic the Argy attrition probably wouldn't be too far off. and the fact that the bombs actually fused correctly probably explains the greater nember of ship kills. would have been nice to have seen a harrier or two appear to sort things out a bit, a nice excuse to scream "La Muerta negro!" for effect!

Only Blowpipe kill of the day was on the other side of Falkland Sound at Port Howard, then the Argies shot down a RAF Harrier GR3 with it. @CombatIneffective
@CombatIneffective Год назад
@@richardvernon317 I am not talking about the effectiveness of the system. I am talking about historical accuracy here. The Blowpipe was the worst Shoulder fired anti air system ever made. In fact had Argentina been using Warsaw Pact aircraft, the system would have been even more useless since the RWR in a Soviet aircraft would have picked it up and any radar jammer would have rendered the missile system useless. The British practically begged to get the Stingers sent to them. And as for hit rate? There are only 3 known kills with the blowpipe for the around 300 firings of the system leading to a 1% kill ratio.

From a total DCS novice, a technical question to anyone doing DCS: What is the typical framerate in these kinds of sims? Back in the days, when QuakeWorld was all the rave, we up'ed the framerate from the default 72, then to 100, 140 and even 200 fps. We had old fashion CRT monitors that supported that (CRTs had no lag whatsoever). There was a significant difference between 72, 100 and 140 fps, and then very slightly at 200 fps. This might be trivia, DCS is a very different game, but I am curious because in the heat of a fast moving game, you'd want to emulate the capabilities of the eye-brain as much as possible. Again, I'm asking as a complete novice.
@rodneypearce6113
@rodneypearce6113 Год назад
Very much depends on how fast a given machine is capable of running it. high fps is far less important in a Sim than a first person shooter as well. I cap mine at 120 with high settings, but sometimes when there is a lot of objects on screen it will drop to 60, typically when low on Marianas map, for example, in external views.

Obviously better to attack en masse than one or two at a time. Computers, missile systems, gunners ALL have much easier time with just one or two to spot assess target. Better to orbit on far side of island, form up, go in as a group... one long line 5 seconds apart??

I wonder how effective Mistral equipped Gazelle helicopters would have been at defending the initial landings from air attack, before the Rapier batteries were fully operational? My understanding is that the missile system wasn't available until the late-'80s and wasn't acquired by the British anyway. So 0/10 for historical accuracy. But multiple Gazelles defending against a full wave of low level attack aircraft might be an interesting scenario to explore?

Mistral Gazelle is the best Fox 2 A2A module in DCS. It SO annoys the fixed wing guys to be shot down by a Helo!

British lost three aircraft on 21st May 1982. A Harrier GR 3 shot down over West Falkland by a Blowpipe SAM and Two Gazelle's!!! Shot down over San Carlos by Small Arms fire from the few Argentinian troops deployed in that area.

It seems that every time you guys use drag bombs you drop to late. GR needs more practice. That is all! Lol

You need to train/practice properly to use this type of bomb accurately. Realistically no one has time to do that. Looked cool though.

Why did you call the Royal Navy ships, “…the enemy ships…”?
@b8nnytez
@b8nnytez Год назад
and why do you call the bombing of men the pilots would have known would have been trapped on those ships 'heroic'? I know a lot of time has passed, but we lost a friend on the Galahad. I know you want to be fair to both sides, I understand that, in these woke days, but you need to remove 'heroic' from the thumbnail as those men on the ships died very gruesome deaths, without getting the chance to be 'heroic'

@@mrdlama4036 The thing is with the history of this conflict, it has almost been allowed to shift to the point where the UK were the bad guys - this war was caused by a military junta, who murdered anywhere between 20,000 and 50,000 of their own people, the Argentine forces treated the islanders appallingly - no doubt if the islands had remained in Argentine hands for much longer, many of the islanders would have been 'disappeared' too. Argentinians should be for ever grateful to us for ridding them of a truly evil government - but no they'd rather focus on a few islands than actually fix the poisonous nationalism that is the cause of ALL of their problems - such as having an economy that collapses like clockwork every decade.
