I show the main components of the R80ST electrical system. Click this link to see how I removed the electrical system. brook.reams.me/bmw-motorcycle...
Oh man. I like this wiring setup so much more than the system used on my 1981 R100RT...which according to the VIN, actually started life as an R100CS. I had to take off the headlight to tighten up the two fairing support bolts on the steering head. A mess of wires and a couple of relays completely obscuring the board fastened to the back of the headlight bucket. If I had a fuse go on the road...I would have been buggered. I spent a lot of time taking a ton of pics of the mess as I took it all apart and relocated the board, all of the wiring and relays, inside the left part of the fairing. That R80GS wiring setup is super slick and simple. My rerouting works fine but it's still a bit of a pain tucked up under the fairing. I might have to try emulate something like the GS.
Great project! I have an 83 ST too (Rot), red in German. Please double check that the front caliper is mounted on the wrong side of the fork, both stanchions have mounts but the LEFT side was standard for the rotor, and the wheel hub had it’s mounts accordingly.
Hi Pedro, Every picture I've seen of an ST shows the rotor and caliper are mounted on the right side (as you sit on the bike), not the left. My friend's ST also has the rotor on the right side fork slider. For example: www.bmbikes.co.uk/photopages/photosr80st.htm
Very sorry, my mistake, I’ve must been thinking of my other bike which has a left hand side rotor, I will double check next time I make a suggestion. 🥺.
Bmw r65 1987 problem in light system, position light, low beam, dash light and stop light not working. Bmw r65 1987 monolever Hi, dear biker community. I’m restoring my bike and I need your help. I’ve checked and replaced all the 6 boxes that work perfectly, in addition to having changed the 2 fuses under the seat and checked all the wires for possible breaks or disconnections. Everything was working perfectly until I mistakenly put together pin 3 and 12 main wire harness where the instrument panel connects (when trying to install a new digital dash). Since that time the position light, low beam, dash light, stop light and back stop light don’t work in ignition position 1. In ignition position number 2, the turn signals, high and low beams work if I activate the command and the stop light if I press the brake, however the dashboard does not illuminate, neither do I’ve position lights, stop light. Is there any other fuses or what could have been damaged when connecting those pins (both pins have 12v voltage)? Please if anyone knows what to do I would be very grateful with your help.
Barron, my build plan is a restoration with improved components where it makes sense. However I have all the instruments so I will use them. The wiring is pretty simple compared to the airheads that put all the wiring inside the headlight shell. This bike just has the headlight and parking light bulbs inside the shell, so it's very clean. All the dash lights are inside the tachometer so there's only one plug to feed them all.
@@BrooksAirheadGarage gotcha! I'm from the 70's and 80's era of Japanese cafe conversions and the M-Unit is the first thing I buy now, regardless of builds!
