What always amazed me about Stephane Grapelli,outside of his uniquely beautiful artistic interpretation of the music,was just his physical ability to play the really hard and fast bars of a score as easily, tirelessly and deftly as the slower bars - this phenomenal ability stayed with Stephane into his late 80's!!!

I saw Grappelli twice - once when I was a kid (with Diz Disley trio) and much later a few years' before he died when his health was going (he sat on chair from memory). I played the violin at the time but gave up after I saw him perform. I can't imagine where and how people like him came from.
I like this rare video! Thanks for posting. I was already 34 in 1997 when I had the opportunity to learn the violin, and that was the year Stephane Grappelli went forever. Feeling sad for the loss of a great musical figure. Thanks for reviving him through this video and others.

Monsieur Grappelli me rappelle à bien des points de vue mon professeur de grec. Un abîme de savoir-faire et de connaissances,lié à l' humilité de l' être exceptionnel. A bon vin point d' enseigne. Les personnes bien nées n' ont pas besoin de 's' auto-proclamer de prétendus génies. Leur présence, la magie qu'elles répandent autour d' elles, et leur art sont tellement élevés qu' ilsen paraissent presque évidents. Cela me fait penser à feu le sublime pianiste Horrowitz. A le regarder jouer l' on eût cru que jouer du piano, c 'était facile. Il ne travaillait pas en se produisant sur scène, non, il jouissait. Cela n'est donné qu' aux rares génies qui habitent ce bas-monde par ailleurs si borné, si étriqué. Si d' une quelconque manière il y a un au-delà, pussions-nous, toutes et tous devenus amateurs de musique de qualité, rencontrer Dieu, qui a permis que les grands existent, et les artistes en tous genres qui nous ont quittés et, j'espère, précédés. Oui, c’est vrai, c’est une perte de ne plus avoir un Grappelli, un Legrand (le bien nommé); mais, ne peut-on se satisfaire de pouvoir jouir aujourd’hui des ces magnifiques archives et tout simplement l’oeuvre à jamais gravée? Moi je suis immensément heureux de devoir m’en contenter, prendre conscience et apprécier les oeuvres malgré la vie qui sépare les êtres. Ce artistes là ne mourront jamais vraiment…
Stephan Grappelli is one of the greats and I am delighted I heard him live twice in London. Alas, I have never heard Michel Legrand live, although I hear he still going strong at the grand old age of 86. Two greats making music together, thanks for posting this here.
