1986 Mack R-Model (R600/R686ST) Startup and Walkaround

A quick start up, walk around, and rolling a little coal in an old one-stack bulldog Mack R-model tractor that belongs to a friend of my grandfather. This is a 1986 R686ST with a 300 HP Maxidyne engine and a straight 5-speed transmission. There are still plenty of these old things running around making money today, especially on farms. This one is hooked to a grain trailer and is being used for soybean harvest. It was a former Matlack tanker fleet truck (hence the lack of a passenger seat). Enjoy.

The R Model and the B Model were the Best 2 Trucks that Mack ever made, and they were also the 2 Best Looking Trucks Mack ever made. The CF Fire Series was also right up there with the B and the R as well.

@@MichaelTJD60 the trucks are balanced alot better than the new shit. New trucks are nose heavy and with air ride and a power divider a heavy dew on the ground and they are stuck on top of the ground! Mack built a drive in and come back out work truck when they built these! I'm sure my father had a couple million miles in a couple of different R models similar to this. And I've seen a crawler hooked to the front an 2 skidders pushing with the rear ends pulling mud. You would pull today's trucks in half doin some shit like that. But I guess that was old school!

No lie I'm 39 years old and from what I have been told my mother and i came home from the hospital in the passenger seat of a 78 r-model. Pops unloaded a load of wood at the plywood plant an swung right back through and took us home. You had to be an iron Man to truck bad in the day. That's awesome that your very first ride was in an R-model. My uncle used to run an R-model pulling an oil tanker from NJ up to Connecticut several days a week, and swears that truck was the reason for his kidney stones. lol. Macks were built for the owner, not the driver. But I don't think it would be too difficult to get a smooth ride out of one, with an upgraded suspension and cab.

My grandpa had a truck similar to this one. It was pretty good, the only complaint I have is that damn buzzer. That was mostly all I remember about the truck since it broke down in 05. The seller's grandson finally started hitting my dad up to let him buy the truck back. At first he didn't want to let it go, but the guy eventually found a 1995 Mack CH613 to trade straight-across for this one. I'm not too sad to let this truck go, since we have another R-model that my grandpa never sold. Also, I'm happy that I never have to hear that damn buzzer anymore.

Mine was an 84' we had 4 new ones in 88/89, by then they had replaced the second stick with an air button which was easier, then having to use 2 sticks when backing in. we hauled conc. pipe & had a lot of tight jobs to get into,,, pull up, back in, pull up get straight..
