He said he saw Dr. J and he pointed to the back end of the court, indicating Jordan should do the free throw line dunk which he did. Dr. J won the first dunk contest in the 1970s, and gave Michael advice on how to win this won over a decade later.

Younger cats these days don't understand what the slam dunk contest meant to us. It was considered a sideshow during all star week. It didn't have the biggest sponsors for years. This is where signature shoes were introduced every year. This is where cats that had a mediocre year could show and prove. It was the one thing we looked forward to every year for years. Players would work on dunks the whole season just for this event. We used to put big money on these contests and it made February so much fun!

I grew up during the 80's, and remember the true amazement of these athletes. I'm also amazed at being able to revisit what seemed to be new heights reached by the participants...accomplishing more than ever with the human body. Question was...what would we see next? Now, after revisiting that three of these videos, all with the participation of Domonique Wilkins, I'm left to ask the question, and even worse yet, see if I'm alone in this thought process. First off, I was a huge fan of Domonique...the human highlight with his signature windmill dunk. He was a tremendous athlete and the Slam Dunk Contest was signature made for him. If he wasn't winning, you can bet he was in the final round of two. Now, this is where I'm a little lost... With a half dozen or so participants, you get to see a decent amount of variation within each player's portfolio...except with Wilkins. In each of the three contests, he not only performs the same dunks in each of them, but the crowd reacts like they haven't seen this before. Even the announcers were saying that these dunks were worth 50 points. Wilkins would move on to the next round, and there he is again...the same style dunk. He comes in...jumps...spreads his legs...holds the ball down, with both hands, arms locked...then after performing a pump, he dunks it. After that, each of his dunks are essentially the same, except one might be a reverse...another might have him come in from the side...it's just almost no variation...and this guy is beating the likes of Jordan with these dunks. I really was at a loss. I couldn't believe the scores he was getting, or how the announcers seemed so taken aback. After that first dunk, the ones that followed had no creativity, no originality, and certainly no added degree of difficulty. Anyways, if anyone reading this has watched the '85...'86 and '88 contests, and can either agree with me, or even better, tell me what I'm not seeing. Now, if anyone should answer my call here, please only do so with remembering that we are in the context of the mid-to-late 1980's. If someone attempts to 'school' me using present criteria, it won't answer my question.

I loved the competition between Dominique and Michael. They brought the most stunning dunks out of each other. Dominique with his power and Michael with his floating grace. I love basketball and today's unbelievable skill in the NBA but I miss the basketball of the 80s and 90s.

I really think judges should have and opportunity to see these dunks in slow motion...seeing all the moving parts and the creativity behind the dunks before they score. At first glance the dunks look normal but in slow motion wow! Mike is truly one of a kind

Wilkens 45 at 20:11 was the key robbery causing him to lose. His head is at the rim for the entire windmill - pure hang time! Possibly the best dunk of the contest, and still one of best windmills ever because of how he contorts his body on the throwdown along with the crushing blow to the rim. I love watching VC and others doing great windmills, but they have minimal body contortion and less art - it's all arms for those guys, and not much else.
