A lot of you love old Volvos judging the reaction to the 1995 Volvo 960 Estate video as part of the Tweed Jacket Reviews which I made last year, and also the love which has been poured out on Matt Richardson's 1988 Volvo 740 2.0 GL, which has recently appeared on the furiousdriving RU-vid channel ( / furiousdriving ) for the Santa Pod £500 Challenge we are undertaking last month. As I was undertaking two other projects in the area earlier this week (the other one with Matt will be uploaded next week), I asked if I could film the Volvo for my channel too, and he very kindly obliged.
Be prepared for a lovely 1980s blue interior, references to the Dodge Dynasty, a certain distinctive gearlever, a familiar looking glovebox lid, not very much rust for such an inexpensive car, and a very, very lost looking 2.0 litre red block engine. Nothing untoward,, then!
The other channels in contention so far:
The Rubbish Mechanic - ( / leadedstar )
Planet Auto - ( / @planetautouk )
Ashraf On Cars - ( / @ashrafoncars )
HubNut - ( / @hubnut )
furiousdriving - ( / furiousdriving )
The Challenge Rules:
-Under 100,000 miles
-MOT for the duration of the challenge
-No diesels
-At least some service history
-Bonus points awarded for Rovers and Alfa Romeos, points lost for Renaults, Fiats, Citroens and Peugeots
-Car must be purchased and prepared for less than £500 and must go to the event and back under its own power
-The car must be sold, hopefully for a profit, following the challenge
-The car must not be knowingly stolen or written off
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

Classic 1980s Northern European lower spec executive car interior, absolutely brilliant!

As I have commented on matts channel, my uncle was a product loyal volvo owner, he first had a 265 Gle (Reg:- AWX999S), then many 740's, last one's reg was F274OYY which was a 740Gle estate (check them, i seem to remember reg. numbers). I too grew up on these cars and I'm very familiar with the distinctive clicking sound of the seat belt warning light! Absolute tanks and bomb proof. Btw it was me who told matt to sell it to a friend and then buy it back off him, there is nothing in the rules that say you cant do that, and adding owners shouldnt really matter too much at this age.

Thanks ever so much indeed! Mr Richardson and I independently had a conversation a week ago about him possibly selling the car to someone else and then buying it back if he wanted to keep it, but I don't believe he wishes to do so at present. It is, as you say, perfectly in the rules as long as the name on the V5 changes and money is exchanged. That seatbelt warning buzzer, and that light, are both very familiar to me as well! I think my mother's 240 did about 125,000 miles in 11 years before she sold it to a colleague in 2001. This was the era when people kept their Volvos for ages, wasn't it?

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Indeed they did, my uncle's 240 (C499XYG) did about 2 trips from yorkshire to london each week, it went on to do 100k miles in about 3-4 years with out any problems, 100k was a lot of miles for a car in them days. If you go to a place in north London called Golders Green (NW11) there is a huge orthodox jewish community there, and the 240/740's from the 80s seem to be very popular with the older gentlemen, the 240/740's are a common site around there.

Yes, not surprised that your uncle's car did such high mileage. They do need servicing every 6 months or 6,000 miles, but otherwise the 740s and 240s are very durable. Haven't been to Golders Green for a while, but I am sure that they are quite common up there. It's the sort of area where I would expect to see one, actually!

Interior is very similar to the 240gl my dad had back in the 80's. Loved borrowing it for motorway trips.

Yes, my mother had a 1989 240 GL Estate from 1990-2001, as I mentioned. They all have a similar feeling to them, don't they? Those head rests are simply iconic!

That's very, very nice! Hard to believe the 700-series were supposed to be a replacement for the 200-series. Lovely old cars! Wish Volvo of today were more akin to this.

Thanks ever so much indeed! Yes, the 740 was designed to replace the 240, but didn't do a very good job of it, as the 240 remained in production until after the 740 had died. The nearest things I can liken these to is probably the S90 and V90 these days, which are actually similar in many ways.

I think they would be cupholders for your Thermos flask cups not your take away coffee cups of today. What an amazing car for the money proper "old skool" barge. I think I fancy your Rover for the economy run and the better time up the strip Joseph. I just had a look at the MOT history and this car hasn't failed on much over the years. Good stuff.

Thanks Mr G! Yes, not at all the sort of cupholders we have these days... There is a bit of work to do on her, but it's strange being back in a car like this after so many years (around 19 to be precise). The engine in my mother's 240 was a bit different, being larger and catalysed (it also may have been the 16 valve version of the red block), but the noise these cars make is ever so similar. We will have to see how things go on the economy run and on the strip, you never know! Mr Richardson will also be giving the 740 an MOT before Santa Pod, I believe...

You both seem to really like the cars you bought. And have to sell. Solution. Sell them to each other, then “borrow” them long term. This may be bending the rules somewhat. 😉

We have already discussed this, actually, as it came up during the last Santa Pod Challenge... The rule is that the car must change hands for money and show a change of keeper on the V5. Beyond that, it's up to the person's own ingenuity.

What a car! Hugely impressive purchase for the money.

Mr Richardson did all right, didn't he? He has a fair bit of work still to do for the MOT, but he didn't pay much for it in the first place, so it looks like a pretty good investment at the moment.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting These old Volvos are massive aren't they ? A chap I know had the estate version and used it to transport wardrobes when his children moved between flats.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
@@stanleyleopard6799, yes, my mother had a 1989 240 GL Estate from 1990-2001. It was absolutely huge! We had two rear facing seats in the boot too. Don't actually know whether the 200 or 700 estates were bigger, but a friend of my mother's had a 1989 740 GL Estate and that seemed massive as well. We fitted two full size kitchen tables in the boot of my mother's 240.
