I'm from the DC area and Leonard was my hero growing up. But I fully feel Hagler's animosity through his comments towards Sugar Ray. But some of the animosity was well earned by Sugar Ray. Hagler had been waiting for his opportunity to finally start signing fights that would be serious money earners. Hagler had been fighting an uphill battle to get what he had long been overdue. The chance to fight in fights that he deserved to be in years earlier. But he was avoided a great deal. Hagler had felt he was dealt an unfair blow by Leonard when Leonard had set up a press conference that everyone had assumed would be the press conference to make the long awaited Hagler-Leonard fight official. Instead, Leonard had announced his first retirement due to the injury to his retina. That is understandable. But why mislead everyone into thinking that making the fight official, was instead a completely different circumstance. It was cold. Anyway, Hagler finally made his long awaited opportunity at a big money fight when he beat Hearns.

The only elected "Congressman / Senator" and a World Champion in history. 3x Fighter of the Year Fighter of the Decade Defeated 22 World champions (As of July 20, 2019).
What a wonderful fight....one we can only dream about these days. The dignity both of them showed post fight is a testament to their character. I only wish we had fighters of this calibre and character today....peace.
Floyd could have competed with these guys but doubt if he would win. One thing overlooked in these comparisons, Floyd is a smaller guy by at least one weight class, probably two.
I watch Tommy Hearns cause I'm trying out for Boxing and I hope to turn pro. I have a similar build to Tommy 6'2 and slim. Great fighter. Some one I can definitely learn from.
Love these old fights, back when the real legends ruled the ring, and multiple weights had great names, now you can count good fighters on 3 fingers. Sugar ray was the best though, as he fought all the big names in his prime and won, both fighters here are a lil past their sell by date.
Imagine what a Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, or Duran would do against the competition nowadays at 147-168lbs. I doubt there's anybody in those weight classes that could beat any 1 of them 4 in their prime.

Hearns DEFINITELY won the fight. Two rounds he won by 10-8 scores (knock downs), and he won more rounds in general. Ray had his moments, but Hearns won the match of two past-their-prime fighters.
@@coldworld4503, yep, but Tommy learned from the 1st fight that when Ray starts to flip the switch and go all in with those kill shots and connects with those missiles that clinching was the best defense. If not TH was gonna go to sleep. Even though I am a devout SRL fan I love me some Tommy Hearns and appreciate his talents and graciousness as he demonstrated both class and humility towards Ray Leonard. Two of the best to EVER do it!!!!
Leonard was hurting him far more, I see now why they gave him the draw in this fight. Tommy had one real knockdown but Leonard wasn't hurt. Hearns was rocked through half of this fight though. Hearns on points but Leonard was the bigger fighter this night.

sorry bro hears won this fight big ...hearns took the rounds 1-4 with a 2 point round ..plus 7 10 11 and had another 2 point round late in the fight ....if it was a 15 round fight still dont think srl could have come back ...to far down

Did you not watch their 1st fight. If that fight was 12 rds instead of 15 Leonard loses BIG TIME. Hearns ran outta gas otherwise he dominated that fight.
Round 3 knockdown was not a knockdown the last knockdown was, that being said I think Tommy won but razor thin in my opinion these guys were the best at welterweight this fight they both in my opinion were past there prime
The Legend the biggest difference in the two fights were the scheduled lengths. If fight number 1 was scheduled for 12 instead of 15 Hearns wins a decision instead of getting knocked out. If fight number 2 was scheduled for 15 instead of 12 Hearns gets knocked out.

Every analysis of Hagler v Leonard agree Hagler won by a big margin.In this case,Leonard isn't even man enough to come out and admit he got absolutely trashed.Just think,Marvelous Marvin Hagler lives with the fact he was robbed by the boxing commission and Mr Hit Man Hearns was practically held at gunpoint!!!!
If Leonard didn't duck the "Bean Stalk" for 8 years after their first fight until Leonard thought he was a shot fighter, Hearns would have knocked him out within 8 rounds.
A couple of more rounds & Hearns gets knocked out again just like their 1st fight went 14/15, this would have been the same. The mistake was a 12 Round limit as all fight fans didn't get to see a killer 13th & maybe a 14th round.
It's hard for me to not give this fight to Tommy. I don't see how you LOSE when you have a couple of 10-8 rounds in the bank. Even Leonard has stated many times the Hearns won the fight. Maybe they felt that travesty would cause Hagler (who was calling the fight at ringside with Time Ryan and Gil Clancy with VERY biased commentating in favor of Hearns) to come out of retirement to avenge himself and Hearns. That never happened.
A tough fight I can see how it was called a draw because they both gave 100% and in the end both men were still standing ,Ray got knocked down twice with good strikes and Tommy got rocked a few time really well and had to hold and wrestle to stop Ray's attacks. it was a Draw. In their first fight Tommy had lacked one thing skill in holding and wrestling, because he boxed so good in all his other matches he never had to use those tactics. The only thing he had to learn because he generally would just keep fighters back with his long arm reach.
Hearns didn't lack experience the first fight because he outboxed everybody. He lacked experience because he knocked out pretty much everybody he faced within 8 rounds before the first Leonard fight.

They score fights so differently today..ggg fought his second fight with canelo like sugar and canelo fought like hagler and they gave it to canelo..but sugar got the decision ...i thought hagler won and i thought hearns won this
Hey Joe, i had to reply to your post as i see some have replied in a less than dignified way. I agree with all you say, i think the problem is judges go into these fights with "favorites" in mind...like fans, they already favour one fighter over the other. There is also corruption to consider...a big fat envelope to "influence" your decision. Like you, i believe Hearns won this....but most of all Joe, don't let the idiots that have replied in a nasty way bother you.....peace Brother.
I still can't watch the Hagler / Leonard fight and find 7 rds that Leonard won. Those pitter patter last 10 seconds of the round bullshit punches Leonard was throwing obviously impressed them judges.
@@dazuk1969 I think judges (many not all) really don't know how to score fights. When's the last time you saw a 10/10 round. Some rounds just don't have a winner, and in circumstances like that I think judges will give the round to their favorite of the 2 fighters.
I know I’m in the vast minority here. But I’ve watched this fight many times over the years and contrary to what everyone says (including Leonard) I think a draw was justified. Definitely wouldn’t have argued a Hearns win. May have argued a Leonard win a little. But I personally thought a draw was at least explainable. If anyone cares to discuss without name calling and insults I’d be glad to go round for round with folks. Just as a discussion of course, not to get into some sort of shit slinging match. Past their primes as they may have been they gave it their all.
This decision was total horses***t! Its a shame to train like they do and have 3 guys cheat the winner. He won 2 rounds with knockdowns so they would be scored 10-8. he won 8 of the 12 rounds. So he dominated the fight. Fix is in when you see Richard Steele in the same ring as Leonard. He was in the ring when Hagler was robbed in the Hagler vs Leonard fight.....

Leonard won the first fight, hands down, and it was even thru 11 (maybe a 1 point lead for hearns because SRL took off 2-3 rounds); SRL was never down by more than in a point in this whole fight. worse scoring ever.
