4th QTR crunch time and they’re talking about a substitute offensive lineman.......because at that time it was a a difference in the game. Joe Jacoby was the main reason they were finally able to pass the ball down the field on that drive. These announcers today would have been talking about the quarterback controversy or something.
As amazing the Skins were the previous year I remember the divisional playoffs against the 49ers as very frustrating because the breaks just didn't happen for us. 1990 & 1992 loses against the 49ers Rypien needed to carry the skins. The fumble between him and Mitchell that could have given us the lead late in the game is one of the more frustrating playoff games that I can remember. This 49ers team easily could have been beaten. We just didn't capitalize on their mistakes
This game proves the point that Steve Young was just a product of a system where as Joe Montana was a stud who made the system better. They should have started a healthy #16 the next week against Dallas
Or...hear me out here, Dallas was an historically great football team. Montana scored 3 points against the Giants in 1985 and 1986 and got benched against an 8-7 Vikings team in 1987. As great as he was, and he is the 2nd greatest QB of all time IMHO, Montana had flaws just like any other player.
@@christopherdelgaudio9484 I wanted the 49ers to get a crack a Washington the year before because I felt they would have pulled off the upset, but sense the 49ers finished 10-6 but didn't get in the skins got to play the falcons booooooooo.
@@seankeys5384I don't totally disagree. I think the 49ers were a dangerous dark horse team in 91. Only 3 teams in my opinion could have upset the Redskins in 91. Cowboys 49ers or Eagles. If 49ers made the playoffs the year before it probably would have ended similar to this game but reverse winner.
This was Steve Young's first playoff start. Yeah the 49ers were sloppy and should have lost, but the 49ers still won the game. The sad thing is that sloppiness came back to bite them the next week when Dallas unlike the Redskins actually converted 49er turnovers into points.
@@johnellizz skins fan but i never understood how steve young was equal or better than joe. i still find it difficult to think brady was as good as joe. honestly i feel like montana is a bit forgotten & maybe under appreciated. not enough peaple even include him as top 5 qb"s. i think he is number 1all time having said that i was to young to see namath & unitis
Thanks for uploading this game! I've been wanting to see this one for the longest time! I've always wanted to see what happened in SF during the Divisional round before they played my Cowboys in that epic match-up a week later.
@@bonsaw57 I'm not your Bruh Can't get right his final game was against the 49ers in the playoffs in 92-93 Season then he came back to coach Washington stop being opinionated when you don't know what you are talking about
I remember this game very well. Joe's last game til he returned. Team literally got old and the Skins back doored their way in the playoffs and beat the Vikings on the road. Ryp really played bad all year long but Gibbs would never bench him. This was really the beginning of the end for our glory years.. :-(
Bruh, whut crazy is that this team was considered a big disappointment...even though they accomplished more than any Redskin team since then. We talking 27 years, bruh. If the Redskins were this good today the DMV would be in ecstasy, bruh.
Gibbs didnt have a better option than Rypien off the bench and he was coming of an awesome year the previous season. Maybe he should have benched him for a game or two but in playoffs he had to go with Rypien. I remember they were considering signing Joe Montana in offseason. I think they even mentioned it in this game. They would have been a playoff team in 93 if they had signed Joe.
These two dominated the league together for so long that it's a shame they didn't play more huge playoff games against one another. Sure, you had the 83 NFC title game but in my opinion that's not nearly enough. I don't even count the 90 and 92 divisional round games because those are akin to preseason games for these franchises. As a Jet fan I perceive a divisional round game as a gift from God, but for these teams and their fans a trip to the promised land was expected on an annual basis.
That doesn’t mean a divisional round game can be dismissed, given the right circumstances the true super bowl could happen in a divisional round game. No it’s not quite as epic as a conference championship but given the right matchup it can be close. Remember Cowboys-Packers in 2014? As great as the NFC title game was, everyone remembers “did dez catch it”, the same can’t be said about the packers botched onside kick in the nfc title game. Even a wild card game can be very hyped if the circumstances are right.
TheLocalLt No question. Historically divisional round games are the best but looking back on this particular matchup I don't think there were enough San Francisco/Washington playoff games in general given how consistently dominant both teams were for correspondingly long period of time.
@@TheUltimateCrash1990 Yep. Bills vs Steelers as the first game then the 49ers vs. Redskins on Saturday. Then on Sunday Cowboys vs Eagles then Chargers vs Dolphins.
I remember being irritated during this game mainly because of Rypien, and disgusted after the Redskins lost. They had opportunities they didn't capitalize on. After this game they pretty much were not relevant until 1999 when they won the division.
@@jackduncan5442 They were relevant in 92. They finished 9-7 but were 2 last second plays away from 11-5, beat Vikings in Minnesota on wild card weekend and gave 49ers everything they could handle a week later in this divisional game. They had chance to win this game and would have had a fair chance of beating Dallas in championship game. They beat Dallas a few weeks earlier. I still think Dallas would win championship game but point is ,Skins were relevant in 92.
I did that the next week when we lost to Dallas I broke my Mom's remote and then hours later after I calmed down I had to think of a lie to tell her lol
That the beginning of the end of the Redskins after that game. The Redskins limped into the playoffs with 2 straight losses and then the upset win over the Vikings. Once the Redskins lost that game Joe Gibbs retired, the Redskins would flame out after a 2-0 start and Mark Rypien would be gone from the team the next year. The "Posse" of receivers was gone and the Redskins won only 1 playoff game with Norv Turner and 1 with Joe Gibbs back in 2005.
@@redmustangredmustang actually the Redskins in 93 under Ritchie started 1-1, not 2-0. After the win against Dallas they lost at home game to the Joe Bugel lead Cards. I was at that game. Also on the Cards was Gary Clark as he left via free agency. I just remember watching Gary Clark get the better of our secondary and it just hurt watching him come back to RFK in another uniform. But yes that was the beginning of the end.
@@redmustangredmustang Always felt deeply disappointed that Gibbs retired after such a great 12 year run. He had what it took to be the GOAT. But he was apparently too much of a workaholic and burned out. Such a shame.
I feel you there. I was in Desert Storm making money off of the Redskins in a 3k man tent city. Then came the 49ers. Well, The Redskins went to the Super Bowl the next year.
He was too soft the second, which is weird because usually you think of an older coach as being harsher, but Christian fauria told a story about how Gibbs would let his meetings get out of hand with, for example, Clinton Portis interrupting Gibbs to ask whether they could switch to white cleats, provoking a reaction from the room and derailing the meeting. Fauria said this wasn’t the Joe Gibbs he had heard about when he left Belichick to go play for Joe
@@jfalconredskins Idk about that Parcells, Holmgren, etc seemed to do just fine in the early 2000s. I mean it's not like Gibbs was bad either, making the playoffs a couple times, he just didn't seem to be as obsessed with accountability as his younger self.
8:50 this is sometimes why I hated commentators back in the day. Giving Steve Young so much credit for making such a bone headed play he shouldn't have gotten away with. Throwing the ball across his body, right at AJ Johnson who just flat out dropped an easy interception and John Taylor was there for the rebound.. It was an awful play that just worked out for SF. Course they couldn't get away with it vs Dallas the following week.
Redskins went out fighting like champions, while the 49ers saw the issues that would plague Young in the playoffs throughout his career (with the exception of 94). A lot of turnovers and directing an offense that did not perform to the level it was accustomed to throughout the regular season.
@@jackduncan5442Dallas literally spotted the 49ers 21 points and the final score was 38-28 and if the refs called it properly Dallas likely wins that game even being down 21-0 and then wins four straight Super Bowls. Steve Young was a big time choker.
Toghest loss as a redskins fan, but the 49ers deserved to win, they were the better team even when they made a lot of mistakes that kept the redskins in the game. It is amazing how the redskins were able to compete and almost win it at the end, would have been a miracle if the redskins had won this game. It was a bad game overall, the field was bad, it was a rainy day, a lot of mistakes by both teams. My biggest victory as a redskins fan came the year before when they won the Súper bowl and this game was the toughest loss because by all that happened I though they were going to win at the end with all the momentum and confidence they had during the last quarter.
Wouldn't have been a miracle. Redskins were underrated. They were the defending super bowl champions, a couple of plays from being 11-5, won a playoff game and nearly beat the 49ers and did it all with a ton of injuries to a lot of key players. If they hadn't had so many injuries they might have been right back in the super bowl.
If the 49ers lost this game, is Young back in 93? I really don't think so. He may have been the one in KC, unless the Seahawks would have accepted him in a trade for the #2 overall pick (the 49ers really wanted Rick Mirer).
Watch jerry rice’s 2001 playoff game vs the jets it was insane, at age 35 he had 9 catches for a perfect 9 first downs including 1 td, he had like 185 yards and averaged 17 per catch
That was not just because of the refs...because this was pre free agency and salary cap...good teams stayed together for years and didn't make nearly the same amount of mistakes and current teams do.
Well considering what Joe Montana did in the 1993 playoffs, it's probably a good thing for my team (Dallas) that they chose to stick with Young. Very uninspiring performance here.
Imagine if that year they had utilized Montana's experience along with Young's athleticism. Montana with bombs to Jerry...Young with runs using the pistol formation! They would have easily won the Super Bowl.....then again there was that Charles Haley trade....that was a huge mistake....that cost them at least 2 Superbowls.
Incorrect. In Charles Haleys FINAL year in San Francisco they MISSED the playoffs. And they REPLACED Charles Haley with Timm Harris. Who was almost or AS GOOD as Haley. So ENOUGH with this whining. SF CONTACTED Dallas for a trade.
@@jackduncan5442 "Everyone" agrees it was a horrible mistake to trade Charles Haley to Dallas..he was one of the final pieces they needed to shore up their defense and win titles. In 1991 Niners missed the playoffs due to two huge losses to Atlanta..though they steamrolled the Bears in their finally game (10-6) wasn't enough. Keeping a 4 time Super Bowl Champion QB on the bench .....it's not whining..it's called looking back and wishing things had been done differently. (oh I get it you are a Cowboys "FAN" :).....well you got your rings! )
@@bocagoodtimes1460 Charles Haley was a DETRIMENT to the team. He was more trouble than he was worth. Haley was a Montana guy and he was never the same after they benched him and left Ronnie Lott on Plan B. Haley was a locker room CANCER and they were better off trading him.
@@jackduncan5442 I agree with you 100% ...trade trade trade but just not to your arch rival Dallas :) Whenever he played his old team he was amped to devour Steve Young !
Underrated game that my 49ers probably shouldve lost. They turned the ball over quite a few times that day but the Redskins weren't able to capitalize. Besides the opening drive, the Niners were pretty sloppy in this game but a win is a win.
Hell yea coming from a Skins fan this was a war. Broke my little heart at the time lol. Just felt like the bounces didn’t go our way .Amazing stat at the beginning of the game at how dominant these two teams had been since 81.
@@bles05 Yep, record wise 14-2 they were great but made the fatal blunder of trading away or letting Charles Haley go to Dallas midseason. Maybe the franchise's worst mistake ever.
Sean Weathers Disagree. Young was the best player in football at this time. The ‘80s 49ers has the benefit of 1. Roger Craig (who should be in the Hall of Fame 2. Bill Walsh’s coaching and 3. Charles Haley and Ronnie Lott By ‘92, most of the glory year 49ers were aged, retired, or traded. You give Steve Young a prime Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, and Charles Haley let’s see how he does.
This was the game. The last time Washington wasn't an embarrassment of a franchise. Many times over the past 30 years I have thought about that fumble at 1:54:28 .
The 1st 49ers' TD was a lucky one. A typical Steve Young pass that should be intercepted. Joe Montana would never throw into a crowd. Steve Young had no idea where the defenders were. But I have to admit that Young was very good at passing against weak defenses.
I usually would never question Joe Gibbs' play-calling, but when the Redskins had that first red-zone chance following the Steve Young fumble, I think they got too pass-happy. They had a VERY good offensive line and a running back who could get the job done. I don't care that Byner had that unfortunate fumble back in the 1987 AFC Championship Game, I would have given the ball to him AT LEAST twice in that "Goal-to-go" scenario. Just like the stat showed, the Redskins scored TD's in those situations 36% of the time in 1992, a HUGE decrease from 1991 when they won Super Bowl XXVI. I know that I would have had at least two TE's in there on each play.
What great teams they had those years but damn did the crowds suffer look at the kickoff no one even standing! For a playoff game kickoff! From like 88 to 2000 the candlestick crowds were pathetic. Full of all the bandwagon fans and that’s where the whine and cheese came from. It was that era. I can’t tell u how many times I was told to sit down while cheering a big play. At a football game! But when they got real bad in 04 to when they got relevant again those crowds came back and it was a great atmosphere at the stick. But those late 80s and 90s crowds were wine and cheese.
31 straight days, with some rain in it. I remember it very well... I couldn't stand Summeral & Madden "Doom & Gloom" Madden was Doom, and Summeral was Gloom Their voices calling our games against an NFC East team were like nails on a chalkboard, and usually meant a loss for us and more than likely a controversial loss. Gimme the mute button and Lon Simmons on the radio...
No Question Rypein was so inconsistent ALL of 1992! This game Washington should have won.. i really thought it would be a Redskins/Cowboys NFC Championship Game.. from how the 49ers scored their opening TD that should have been picked off.. i had a feeling.. Rypein was missing open receivers and the fumbled exchange with Mitchell just killed it.. Redskins were a Older Team on their last run.. I knew it then.. Gibbs did too.. retired in the 93 off season.. He knew this would be a major rebuilding job.. tough to let go of alot of players who won 3 Super Bowls for him...
You know what the first pass I’ll give Rypien a little pass on it. He probably saw Romanowski there and if he under throws it even a little he could pick it off.
Interesting fact. In the 1991 offseason Gibbs tried trading for John Elway, who was in a fued with Dan Reeves because of his conservative offense. Pat Bowlen overrode it but Elway with that '91 team would have been even more amazing. Plus the Skins would have likely won this game and been a good team up until Elway retired. As a Broncos fan I'm glad it didn't happen but it was close. Ernest Byner later told Elway he thought it was a done deal. Elway didn't even know how serious those talks got.
So many classic games that were played in that shithole that was Candlestick Park. Hate to see games of this magnitude decided by fumbles and errors made because of field conditions, but that is football. /End Rant
Never heard the Forty Niners, nor the Faithful whining about the frostbite in Minny, and Lambeau, nor the fans in Mile High throwing snowballs. Home field advantage goes to the team with the better regular season records (that includes wins at home and on the road) and by advancement in the post season. Hate to see busters complaining about mud, yet ignoring the unserviced, worn out Astroturf laid over concrete, with bald spots around the league back then...
@@kidmack1121 Maybe I ignored the astroturf over concrete because it has no context in this game. Great argument though. Candlestick was a dump, that's it. Good day.
@@pardonmedoug886 Your criticism didn't have anything to do with the outcome of this game either. The Forty Niner's playoff home and away record during the Dynasty was something like 25 - 1 I seriously doubt that your "dump" label had anything to do with their overwhelming success at the Stick. Good day to you too.
In his later years Madden's commentary wasn't always coherent. But in his earlier years he was pretty insightful and interesting to listen to... with the occasional odd comments still mixed in.
92 redskins team was getting old on defense. Wish gibbs stayed and rebuilt the team. They would've been a problem in the late 90s unfortunately he retired after this game. And the franchise went downhill until today in 2024
@BJ Obviously you'd never been to a preseason OAKLAND Raider's game, when the tickets were always sold at less than face value, or just randomly given away... And as for your other comment; the skins didn't get to pay off the officials this time.
Ok so he ends up playing. Googled it’and he broke his arm earlier in year in what they thought was a season ending injury but seems he case back and played again before this.
they keep showing the catch from montana to clark in 81 championship game but they never show the play that won the game for the 49ers against the cowboys when eric wright horse collard Drew pearson!!!!!!!
@@redmustangredmustang yep he was still on the roster officially though. The Eagles should have hired fisher in 1991 instead of rich kotite, but fisher probably wood have been loyal to buddy
They were a bad team the redskins just intercepted the ball ezone n the redskins would won. Lucky game for 49ers . next yrs. Redskins traded clark some of defense player some was injured go figure gary clark was the key joe Gibbs left that why
Steve Young was never really a good big game QB, he was great in the Super Bowl they won a couple of years later but that was against an inferior opponent. His turnovers in this game almost lost them the game, and his turnovers the following week cost them against the Cowboys. It's kind of a shame Seifert never put Montana in. I will always believe they would have beaten the Cowboys if Montana was in there.
On the hundred. That Dallas dynasty never happens if Joe plays in that game. Steve Young couldn’t handle the bigger games. Steve’s Super Bowl win was bought. That team was never the same after 1994. Dallas got that ridiculously absurd trade Minnesota trade and the 49ers gifting them Charles Haley. Then the 49ers giving Steve Young the job was crazy and the icing on the top for Dallas. Dallas had way too much luck all at once.
