Hey man congrats on fixing your blown head gasket! But more than that…congrats for not giving up on this DIY fix…definitely felt your frustration and disappointment…thanks for keeping it real bro. You inspire many of hobbyists (not real mechanics) to give it a try. Watched all 16 vids and I’ve subscribed to your channel now. Keep up the good and REAL content!
really appreciate this comment! The world of DIY is frustrating and deciding to put all my mistakes out there was hard to do. Im glad you enjoyed it, it was a long series and battle but knock on wood as of today 4/4/22 the truck is still running strong and getting 17mpg with 256,000 miles. Ive been MIA and kind of lost my zest for filming and editing (editing takes longer than the dang jobs im working on 😂) but im getting back in the groove i think. My other project is a 1993 Ford lightning im restoring, it hit a snag with my paint guy taking WAYYY to long but i think im close to getting it back home for the first time since June of 2021. Planned of starting up filming and posting soon. Again i really appreciate the content, it makes all the work worth it when i see this. Thank you
"It smells like an old folks home where the people are neglected"...🤣🤣🤣 you had me dying with that line James! Glad to see the truck back together 😀👍 just the bumper and you'll be good to go my friend. That poor lizard wanted a ride along 🥺 lol
That stuff is terrible smelling 🤣. I’d almost forgot it how pungent it was then when I hovered over the power steering pump to check levels I got that big whiff..talk about gag a maggot 🤮. That stupid lizard 🤣, I guess it was just his time.
thank you for "doing this for fun" lol i like old fords and my 92 straight 6 needs all of the same work done to it as yours did. i believe your video series will be a great tool for me to get started and get my daily back.
That had to feel good to finally go down the road again! I'm just like you, test driving and waiting for the check engine light to come on! Glad it's up and running, ready for the next project
Dude, I envy you brother and almost hate it's over but super glad for you and great job ! Again, I've enjoyed the series, especially having started mine the same time you started posting. I shed a tear or two when I heard that legendary, Ford, 4.9 fire up the first time, after all the debacles, work and the saga was winding down, Lol.
Stucknarutt it felt good taking her out on the road finally for sure after all that work. There’s still other work to be done on it so I’ll keep posting but it was kind of bittersweet finally finishing up this project, I enjoyed working on it, learning the truck more and posting the progress on here. I’m happy that we got a chance to talk because of similar problems too, I look forward to the notifications that there are new comments and seeing that you posted something. Hopefully the world gets back in order and you let me know the van is up and running again as well. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch these videos and comment brother, I’ll be sure to keep working on this truck and my other 2 and trying to give ya some more stuff to watch.
Logan Gould yes sir still at it. Wish I had more free time to post but it’s been busy at work and home lately. Man I replied to your last comment, I don’t know if you got to see it but...yea it’s time for the Saginaw pump brother. Let me know if you still want to maybe pull that and shoot me a price, I’m ready to upgrade!
3rd Coast OBS yeah I read the comment currently the yard is shut down to ppl going in and pulling parts themselves. they are just doing order type stuff for more expensive than me going out and grabbing it real quick. Once this shits all over I’ll give you the for sure price idk what shipping should be but I don’t think southern Mo to Texas should be that expensive.
Logan Gould appreciate it brother, I’m in the same boat they won’t let us go into the yard either and the ones that still do let you in don’t have anything I need 🤣. This lockdown is terrible, can’t wait for it to be over!
3rd Coast OBS my truck parts are essential buddy that’s what I wanna tell em. Got me locked up at the house with all my kids I need projects to help keep them kids alive and myself sane. Lol but I hear ya it’s rough out here all locked in and suck kids going haywire trying to make the best out of what we got. I’m just thankful I still have a job and am essential making a check through all this. As I’m sure you are as well. Anyway when the yards let up I’ll go pull that and shoot you a message until the get to ripping into that lightning keep recording and giving that content. I’m looking into a camera and need some suggestion I got four kids so I’m trying to keep my price down but still wanna make some good videos I just cherry 🍒 bombed my truck the other day and new brake lines would have made a good video I thought.
Logan Gould man you’re right thank God we are still working and bringing home a regular check, but the family is going stir crazy locked up everyday. Having this little hobby helps me keep my sanity as well because everyone is on edge so Dad can go outside and get a little time to himself 😂. So as far as the camera here’s what I did - last year I went out and bought a GoPro 7 white ($179) but I don’t see them listed anymore on bestbuy but amazon has remanufactured ones for around $150. Biggest problem I had with that one was it seemed like the 1080p didn’t come across on my videos I first did like the lightning walk around, it just seemed blurry. I ended up hitting a turnaround and had some cash to spend and pulled the trigger on a GoPro Hero 7 Black just as the Hero 8 was released so the price dropped from $399 to $319. I decided on that one instead of the newer one because it still has a removable lens in case it gets cracked or scratched ( plus it was cheaper 🤣) that’s what I use now. It has a removable battery and a spot to buy a component to add an external mic which I did as well because the hollow GoPro sound is hard to hear on videos. Also If you go to the GoPro web site you can actually get $100 off if you send them any kind of digital camera working or not towards a hero 8 black making it $299. That being said the hero 7 black is $229 at Best Buy now (on sale). I also used some sort of promotional deal with the camera and bought a copy of adobe premiere elements 19 for $25 (normally like $99 I think) to edit my videos but all the other guys I shout out seem to have found free video editing software online, I just didn’t have any luck using it for some reason so I paid for one. Best advice I can give though, if you decide to go with GoPro is to pick a camera with a removable battery. The battery life on the GoPro 7 white and GoPro 7 silver is short and you’ll have to stop your filming or the job just to charge it up and it’s a drag when that happens. Sorry for the long winded reply lol but want to make sure if you do decide to get one you don’t make the same mistakes I did 🤣.
Steve Stoltz I mean how did he pull that off! It must’ve been some sort of reptile suicide😂. Thanks for your last video Steve, it made this job a lot easier man!
@@3rdcoastobs467 No Problem, that's what makes RU-vid great, Thanks for the mention. I hope that wasn't that British fellow Martin from the Geico commercials, that would be bad for business LOL
That’s really cool to see the truck running up and down the road! All that hard work paid off James! Plus I bet your glad the power steering hose was easier than an entire head gasket job!🤣 I cracked up at seeing that gecko smashed! You won’t be saving 15% or more on car insurance anytime soon!😂😆
YDOC Productions looks like the Gecko should’ve got Allstate to protect it from Mayhem like this..yes sir I’m happy this one is done. That was way easier than I’d thought it would be, thankfully Steve had just made that video showing me how to do it! It was so nice sitting in the driver seat again and cruising around my neighborhood after all this time. Now I Just need to get all the tools out of the cab🤣, they’re scattered everywhere!
3rd Coast OBS 🤣 Haha that’s hilarious! It’s always fun getting to go on a first drive and getting to see the fruits of your hard work. On the flip side of that cleanup is never fun😂
Rob B gotta love these straight 6s. We ain’t passing no one on the highway or winning any races but these engines are full of torque and if you treat them right go on a long time! This ones at 245k and I hope now that I own it I can make it to the 300s like you brother, that is awesome!
@@3rdcoastobs467 thanks. Yeah im the 3rd owner my stepdad was the 2nd and his still good friend the 1st. I have a full log of all the work. Its been very well taken care of. Been doing my own work last few years on it saving tons of cash. I have a list of parts to tend to. Harmonica balancer and timing gears are the big ones. Head gasket will probably be there after. No issues or symptoms now.
Yes sir they do! My hose was shot though, cracked and brittle I decided to swap while I was changing out everything, honestly I learned about the washer after the fact but I was replacing it anyways. I should have put that in the video but you lose yourself in the filming and editing.
Badger bob lol the rust doesn’t usually hit us too hard..but the downside to that is we never get a real winter on the coast. We’re good for about 1 or 2 good cold fronts a year and if we’re really lucky one good freeze. Other then that it’s summer 10 months out of the year 😂. Appreciate ya watching Bob, stay safe as well!
I wouldn't worry too much about that squeak. You probably got some ATF on the belt or light rust on pulley shafts from sitting. If it persists, start checking your idler/tension pulleys. What are you referring to as Saginaw pumps? The metal bodied ones? If so, they're fairly generic. GM ran them for years on everything. 88-98 GM trucks have them. They cost around $40 brand new. The best part? You have an old fitting to confirm the outlet size!
Wesley Johnson that’s what I was thinking too, maybe just a little fluid on there. When I inspected it I think it might be the junkyard power steering pump I got...or the tension pulley. The sound seems to coming from right there. I’ll figure it out. Yes sir the metal bodied p/s. They also had them in the ford E-series vans, I’d like to hit the junk yard up to snag one because I need a different style bracket out of the van to mount it in the truck which just bolts in... I had no idea they were the common GM p/s pump! That’s good info Wes, I learned something new today. This should be easier to find than I thought, and I didn’t realize they were that affordable, I keep seeing the $150 ones and just moving on 😂. I need to do some more digging on this.
@@3rdcoastobs467 not a problem! I have a tendency of digging way to deep for information sometimes. That attachment I sent was the result of me needing a new power steering pump for my F700 several years ago. Glad I could help!
Hey like the video and your trucks them lighting is bad ass I’m working on a 96 4.9 i6 5 speed she runs like a dream it’s a California made truck no rust I live in the Bahamas and parts for that is very limited if you could help me out that will be great! Gonna subscribe
Appreciate ya watching and subbing man. What are you looking for as far as parts? I've had a ton of luck with rockauto and lmc as far as hard to find stuff. The lightning is rough right now, hoping to get it fixed, been working on pricing out the rebuild and its getting expensive!
You can. It's a big regret that my terrible editing left out. My original hose had damaged threads on the p/s pump connection and a crack in the middle of the hose running length wise. I noticed it after I posted years ago.
Ford power steering design and components suck ass i had to replace the low pressure hose fornit was leaking then the high pressure hose started leaking replaced that and the leak moved behind the pulley of the powersteering pump
totally agree, i want to do the saginaw pump swap bad but ive got to get my 93 lightning fixed before i jump back into this truck. although i may try that swap on that truck now that i think about it
