I had completely forgotten about the booing when Gutsu's score came up! I wonder where they thought she should have placed?? The quickness and power of her tumbling was so friggin exciting!!! 💗

Not in the medals, not with a couple of extremely low landings. Choreography is one thing, execution is another.

Henrietta Onodi is the most underrated gymnast ever. I lover her so much. She is just perfect on everything but for some reason she never really stands out. Like I would have thought she would have been a all-around contender in Barcelona but no one really mentioned her. 🤷‍♀️ She’s still my fave.

I often wish that the past was still the present... Gymnastics has gone downhill artistically, and it started speeding downhill after Athens, in my opinion. Gymnastics needs another Khorkina, Onodi, Miller, Silivas, or Podkopayeva to match the artistry of the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. That's just my opinion, as I said, but it does get tiring when all you see is tumbling and barely any choreography (here's a perfect example of that lack of choreography: Shawn Johnson).

I am amazed by some of the conversations on these 5 videos. This is gymnastics, it never goes the way people want it to because the gymnasts are people who cannot perform a routine perfectly - it just doesn't happen. Every 10 scored in gymnastics had it's minor faults, it just depends on which era of scoring it is under. All of the performances had faults, all the gymnasts performed to their best on the day (as always) but sometimes their best that day isn't enough compared with expectation.

The double layout really hurt Lysenko's ankles and lower legs and her technique was not strong on that particular skill. I know you don't like Gutsu but it's true she got better by Barcelona. I've never had a problem having Gutsu as a gold medallist because she had more difficulty than anyone and everyone made some little mistakes here and there. I liked Gutsu's beam, bars and vault.

The 3 bronze medalists all had small issues. Them tying was fair. Even with the low, tumbling pass, I thought Onodi had an overall better routine. Form, choreography. Artistry but gymnastics never cares about that. At least no one was robbed of a medal.

I'm not a Gutsu fan. It's just true she was throwing the hardest things back then. Keep in mind only a handful of women perform "perfect" back fulls on beam and in 1992 it was rare to find a purely clean DTY on vaulting. Gutsu was more of a trickster rather than an artist but it is true she helped expand the difficulty women were doing. For the record, the only two skills Miller was superior were the hope full-Gienger on Bars and the three consecutive layouts on beam.

I have to agree. I mean new scoring system or not there still needs to be more choreography it is ARTISTIC gymnastics. But I think that the FIG is getting there by limiting the amount of tumbles and requiring a dance skills into the score. Or who knows maybe we just another diva?
@maseraticboychik
@maseraticboychik 11 лет назад
'Fully succeeded?' What a bizarre comment. 'Huge height?' She barely got off the beam 'Consistently nailed it?' I saw her wobble or fall multiple times on that 'skill' alone. How exactly was Gutsu anything but a budget, watered-down, bleached-blonde anorexic version of Tatiana Groshkova, for example?
@maseraticboychik
@maseraticboychik 11 лет назад
Not when I saw her. It was Gutsu who had 'problems' and form breaks on everything, including the DLO. I have almost never seen a Soviet (Russian) gymnast with sloppier form.
@espinaca79
@espinaca79 11 лет назад
I think you are wrong. IG reported Gutsu and Galieva debuted it at the 92 Worlds in Paris. Gutsu later said the skill was invented by mistake, since her coach made her attempt to many double layouts during training and one day she was just too tired to perform them. So her instant reflex was to spread her legs.

ya, and in china people call it apparatus gymnastics as well, but it is not an excuse for athletes that the routines should only be about the difficulty. they should really know that it is supposed to be artistic as well, though i noe some gynmnasts are paying more attention to the dancing and expression work. However, some coaches of the little ones just care abt increasing the start value, but those kids have a lot of dancing potentials!

@maseraticboychik
@maseraticboychik 11 лет назад
I've always had a BIG problem with Gutsu being GIFTED with the AA gold ; she did NOT have more difficulty than anyone (her bar routine was nothing speicla in any way, including difficulty); it was approximately equal to Miller's , whose form was vastly superior on every event. I don't enjoy seeing lousy 'fulls' which the gymnast gets huge scores for because she TRIED to do something hard. I know you love Gutsu, but you are myopic on that subject. Her dance was abominable for a Soviet.

Then I was indeed wrong, since I certainly would never read an interview with Gutsu for any reason whatsoever. LOL. Lysenko, however, and Galieva both did it better. (as they did everything else as well...) it's another unfortunate casualty of the new COP--DLOs, particularly fancy DLOs like full-ins or -outs and the split-leg version, are an endangered species. UGH.

Gutsu should have won the bronze outright to be honest. These people who think she should have been deducted a full tenth for her first pass fail to understand it's difficulty. No one complained about Lysenko getting 9.925 on her dty in vault finals with a step because of the difficulty. It's literally the exact same thing.

I’ve noticed that in the past 15 years or so all the gymnasts started looking so thick compared to these girls. I don’t really understand why because these girls are doing some pretty strong tumbling for being so tiny. I’m not trying to fat shame anyone but when gymnasts like Simone Biles look like men, it takes all the artistry out of it because they don’t look graceful at all. I don’t like it as much at all.
@saragrant9749
@saragrant9749 8 месяцев назад
You are not trying to fat shame them? Considering the number of eating disorders, extremely short careers, injuries and so on that took place in that era BECAUSE they were expected to fit a specific, super thin body mold it should be obvious to a foolish mendicant like yourself how hypocritical your statement sounds. The gymnasts of today are allowed to be STRONG, ATHLETIC HUMAN BEINGS. Just because piggish trolls like yourself want to see skinny, starved little girls still competing doesn’t give you ANY right to so churlishly speak of today’s women athletes. Go back to preschool and learn some common decency.

'for the record?' Miller had harder in between choreography on floor, a full-in off beam, and several other things. Gutsu was only ONE of several gymnasts doing hard tricks, and all the others did them better and with better form. Even Chuso, never exactly a ballerina, did a dazzling layout full-in and out on floor and her vaults were VASTLY superior to Gutsu's in every way, though she did not do DTYs. Please cease and desist obnoxious remarks like 'for the record' or this dialogue is done.

I must not have made myself clear. I have no interest in anything involving Gutsu, one of the most unjustified and clearly inferior 'winners' ever to be gifted with an Olympic gold medal. For the record, I'm sure Chusovitina did the split DLO brilliantly, as she did any tumbling trick; however, she never had the body line nor the finish of Lysenko.

Why would a low chest and step forward get less than a tenth deduction? These scores made no sense. Lavinia Milosovici got a perfect 10 even though she had a big hop on her punch front, didn't fully split on her straddle jump and had other errors. I loved the routine, but the scoring made no sense.

I get a dark hoot out of the scoring for this floor final Onodi wasn’t deserving of a 10 but Milosovic was? Farce. Milosovic should have scored no higher than 9.9 with at least TWO visible landing deductions. Shows how biased the judging was. At least Gutsu didn’t get another medal- she already had one she had no business getting- the all around. The biggest blemish on an Olympic gymnastics competition in history.

Agreed. I don't know why Onodi's hop on her triple twist was seemingly deductible but Milosovici's hop on her punch front wasn't. And the judges did give Gutsu a share of the bronze in the floor exercise final, even with the lunge forward and traffic cop "choreography".
