Converting 2nd Generation Ram 2500 to Rack and Pinion Steering. Using a steering rack form a 3rd generation ram (1500 - 3500), we convert the steering from steering box and idler arm to rack and pinon. This is only work on 2 wheel drive 2nd generation ram trucks.
The high pressure power steering line form the 2nd gen. will fit the newer steering rack and the return line only needs a simple barb adapter to reduce the hose size. Modifying the intermediate steering shafts and mounting the rack, resulting in improved steering and handling.

I did it on my 99, very happy with it. The only major difference to get used to is the tall ratio. For the first while I found myself turning in way tighter than intended.

Exactly what needs to be done on my 96 single cab. Thing has the turning radius of a squarebody crew cab F150 and 1.5" of play even with all new everything (except box and pump) steering related.

Either do the swap that I showed in the video, or it would be time to swap your steering box. That's usually where most of the play is.

Ok, having done this a second time after buying a good re-man rack, I caution to check for ANY play in the telescoping steering shaft. ANY looseness will translate into an inch or more of steering wheel play. I put mine on an anvil and beat the play out 9f it with a 5# hammer. When it comes back I may buy a new shaft - but that is money.

Got the motor mount cut and cleared - PITA. All done except for the cooler - yep, you need a fluid cooler. Follow the instructions and it will work. Alignment was an issue for me. I finally had to remove 1/4" from the passenger side inner and outer tie rods. As noted: stiff wheel just off center. And if you have steering shaft slop this won't fix it. Get a new one. And do not disconnect the steering shaft unless the steering wheel is locked in place...I knew better and still broke it: don't know? You will.

nice work! lots of good tips... the OEM Gen 3 Bolt is M16 x 2.0 for mounting the rack. I got a threaded rod that size from Grainger for $11.

Where did you source the tubing - and what size did you use? $50 is lowest I've seen for 3' of 5/8 x 3/4 seamless steel tubing.

I have a 98 Dakota that I have been thinking about doing this conversion. I was thinking of doing a SAS so was watching your Toyota videos. Thank you very much man.

Great video. Great detail. If you have a follow up on this video, it would be nice. Please make more videos of other Parts that swap from newer dodges. Maybe brakes, transmission ? Is It totally necessary to those round tubes inside frame? Or could plates be welded to the front and back of frame ?

Well I'm on the way to buy a rack for the boostedram! Slop in the steering in mine is horrible and dangerous af when I put power down. I hope doing this conversion does the trick.. Appreciate the video brotha 🤙🤙

Need a followup and driving videos. I already have a 95 chevy c1500 sport gearbox on my 96 ram direct bolt on and 2.5 lock to lock vs factory 3.5-3.75.

I do not know. Obviously this isn't for a 4wd, but I don't know how similar the 2wd 1500 frame and dimensions are

Great video , question , did you check for bump steer when picking rack position ? I just bought a 98 2wd with 172k miles and it needs a steering box and I thought to myself ... why not put in a rack ...

Where do you get the ujoint caps? I am super stalled in my conversion because of the ujoints. I was thinking about a borgeson steering shaft. Also looking at my old linkage length vs the length from the junkyard rack and pinion. I have the new tie rod ends all the way in and it looks about 1/2 longer than my old factory setup so I am not sure about alignment issues. Hope to get my truck running again.
@Trav74r
@Trav74r 2 года назад
I don't know that you can buy new u-joint caps. You may have to buy a whole new steering shaft, like you mentioned. As far as tie rod length, if your current tie rods are bottoming out and still too long you can cut the inner thread length down to help make the length right. But you don't want to cut too much. You may also want to look into a different brand of tie rods that have the same threads but are shorter. Good luck.
@matt72991
@matt72991 3 года назад
i just did this on my 97 cummins. im almost out of threads on the tie rods to be able to get the toe right. did yall have any issues getting it aligned and having enough threads?
@Trav74r
@Trav74r 3 года назад
If I recall correctly, we actually had to shorten the tie rods a bit so that we didn't runout if threads. Sounds like the opposite for you. May need to look around and research alternative tie rods with different thread lengths.
@matt72991
@matt72991 3 года назад
@@Trav74r I meant I'm running out of threads by threading them in. I may need to shorten or find shorter inner tie rods.
@Trav74r
@Trav74r 3 года назад
If there are more threads left on the inner tie rod, I would cut it short and clean up the threads on the end.
@Trav74r
@Trav74r 3 года назад
That may have been the same problem we had. Like I said it has been awhile and I don't remember the small details.

Last word: do not buy a replacement rack online if it requires a core return. PartsGeek doesn't not help with return shipping which was $103 for me. Advance has the same unit for $137 after core return to the store. So Basically I burned myself for $324.

Hey bud thanks for the explanatory video, I plan on doing this to my ram to improve the stability and driveability. How has been the durability on these components since they’re in a 1500? I only drive it around town anyway

The truck belongs to my uncle and he has been driving it since this video was made with no problems at all. He still says it's an improvement over the stock setup and recommends others with the same truck look into this swap

Thanks for posting this! I first heard of this swap on Rich Bosch's "Deboss Garage" here on RU-vid and was intrigued. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9fvFNt-gLdE.html I have a '95 dodge cummins and would like to perform this swap because the OEM design just wears out too fast and is expensive to replace. QUESTION: Did you stick with the "all-thread" or did you source grade-8 long bolts? I don't know if there are different grades, but the stuff I've work with doesn't seem up to be up to the task?? Please produce a follow-up video to include the alignment result and if you experienced and "bump-steer" or other handling anomalies?
