In this video I show you how to replace the 2nd gen Ram headliner fabric with a custom fabric of your liking
.
I apologize in advance for losing the section of video where I remove the headliner and then remove the fabric from that. The missing section isn't difficult . I would recommend that you first set the front seats all the way forward and folded, release the headliner from the front and try to set it on the dash, then release the rear of the unit and shimmy it around till you get it out of the truck.
-I can't stress enough, the foam backing has to be completely removed from the headliner unit before you can apply your fabric. You will be attaching the fabric to the fiberglass located under the foam backing.
-Remove the headliner unit from the truck , rip off the old fabric, use a wire brush to remove the foam, use rubbing alcohol to clean the surface when done.
-choose a fabric of your liking from your local fabric store. however, keep in mind that you will want something fairly thin and or fairly stretchy to get around bends and corners easily.
The fabric I chose was very thin, not very stretchy, and it came out very well. It wasn't too difficult to manipulate into place.
-Spray fabric with light water, throw it in dryer till all wrinkles are gone.
-Drape fabric over half of the headliner unit, get it perfectly lined up and ready.
-Spray the exposed half fabric and half headliner unit with your choice of adhesive, let it dry to the touch, typically 10 min.The glue I prefer to use is 3M High strength 90 contact adhesive. it can be found in most construction supply houses near the paint section.
-Slowly and gently lay the fabric in place starting from the middle and working your way out.
gently lay it in place until you are happy with the lay out.
-From this point you need to massage it into place starting out gentle and pushing harder as you go, once again starting from the middle to the outside.
-Once you are happy with the results complete the other half of the application in the same exact manner.
-Stay close by for the next 24 hours, keep it fairly warm and keep checking for areas that may have lifted off the unit. simply massage these areas back down with a lot of pressure.
-If, after 24 hours, any areas don't come out so great and you can't convince the fabric to work with you, use a heat gun very cautiously to heat it up and convince it to comply with lots of pressure. BE CAREFUL! you don't want a burn mark in your awesome new headliner!
Good luck.....thanks for watching! Let me know how yours turned out in the comments!

Great video. Tips for backside, corners and other accessory attachment points very helpful. The use of a heat gun to help smooth out anomalies, critical. Something this size is always going to have some sort of anomaly while laying and finishing. I have same truck, same headliner issue, just trying to find the right fabric to use has been a problem. Glue bleed thru is my main worry.

@thedudeaaronfyi 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment! Just make sure you give the glue time to tack up so it doesn’t bleed through. If it’s still liquid looking don’t try it. Usually takes 10-15 minutes after spraying.

So pretty much the same as contact cement...let it set then have at it. You didn't use the headliner material w/foam backing, is that stuff cheap in quality...I'm having a hard time deciding what to use. Don't want to do this again because of lousy material. Thanks@@thedudeaaronfyi

@@oldschool9622 no I’ve never used the foam. You can find foam backed material but the selection is pretty slim. My headliner from the video is still hangin strong and looks great.

That fabric looks fantastic. Great job. Have you thought about painting the plastic parts to more closely match the fabric, which looks brownish on the video. Cheers!

@@thedudeaaronfyi I have not done it yet. I got the $700 estimate yesterday. From your awesome video I learned that cardboard backing comes out. Just ordered headliner fabric off ebay $50 . Thank you again. I can use the $500 saved to feed hungry less fortunate people. Thanks again. Merry Christmas

It’s not too bad. Maybe an hour to get it out. You’ll enjoy seeing your favorite fabric up there rather than the most boring basic fabrics that these come with. Let me know how it turns out!

Do you have to out thin layer of foam down? Did the fabric u used have foam on it already ?
@thedudeaaronfyi
@thedudeaaronfyi 3 года назад
You have to remove the foam with a wire brush or wire wheel. The fabrics I use are not foam backed.

Was kicked inwards because I locked the key in it. The piece where the window sits is cracked but I have the glass back right, and the piece sits fine it's just leaking underneath and into my cab

I removed my headliner and the foam but the fiberglass that is left is very flimsy and does not really hold shape well… any tips? Should I flex seal the back so it’ll be more rigid?

I just took mine out of my 1997 ext cab and cleaned all the old foam off of it. It is also super flimsy ??? not sure if i can cover that. The new material has about 1/8 fpam backing.

Where can I get the fabric ? We have been looking for his 2nd gen and Walmart don’t have it so wide . If that makes sense. If we bought from Walmart we’d have to buy two sections and that wouldn’t look right!

Great job. Was kind of wondering about the long drying time before working in the fabric? I am doing the same for my 97 extended cab. I intend to use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. I wonder how many were jacked up at the factory and had to be reworked. The probably had a vendor supply them to the production line and just popped them into place. On my 97 I don't have the back doors and it was tight getting it out. Probably went through the rear window before it was installed to get ti in the cab at the factory ?

I’m not sure. I’d see if you can pull the front down in front of the steering wheel and towards the footwell.
