1999 Honda Accord gear selector operation and repair options

The selector pin that activates the micro switch to allow the key to be removed from the ignition was not working properly. This video explores that operation and offers a solution. The pin also rests on the release shoe that allows the shifter to be moved from park preventing that operation as well. This fixes that too. This is a mechanical solution and if your microswitches and release pin in the ignition are not working properly there may be other problems. Please check the other orerations first and ensure that this mechanical repair it the correct route for you. This is a can of worms, you have been warned.

This solution was what I needed, thank you! Never underestimate the value of screw placement. I hadn’t put the screws back in until I could get the shifter to lock in park and remove the key. After an hour or so attempt, watched your video, put the screws in carefully and viola…it worked! Much appreciated.

This has been so helpful. I'm almost positive this is the exact issue with my 98 accord. Hopefully I can fix it without having to take it completely apart.

Unfortunately my son pulled that rod out trying to fix it himself and now it is totally jacked up. I cant find any videos on how to take the console apart to get this part loose. We have a 98 accord.

@@thism69I’ve been dealing with this for a couple days now and its frustrating , were you able to connect the white rod to the push spring ?
@browncarp
@browncarp 3 года назад
My spring came out (the one on the bottom). It's impossible to re-install it so I just left it out and used a wire tie to hold the microswitch closed so I can remove the key. Had to leave the chrome button off as well, and removed the detent pin and plastic rod that went down from the top. Yeah you can shift it with the key out but it's no more dangerous than a manual transmission vehicle.

My shifter lets me switch gears without pushing my break pedal.. the button on the knop cant be pressed for some reason like its stuck being pressed.. if i unscrew the knob to where its supposed to be and raise the knob a lil bit, I won't be able shift gears unless I press the pedal but the knob will come apart

How long does it take to replace the shifter assembly. I am a experienced technician. I am going to to just swap it out with a good one. Do you have to go under the car to disconnect the shifter cable or is everything inside the cabin

It's about 1.5 hour to swap it out. Nothing under the car.

My shifter button fell to pieces inside of the shift lever handle and the push button came flying out and hit me in the side of the leg. Luckily there was enough of it left that I could reinsert it into the shifter and it would disengage the linkage so I could still shift. I had to hold it in the shifter with a rubber band and scotch tape but it worked fine while I ordered the part from Amazon. I just got around to installing the new push button and it seemed to be working fine until I tried to get the key out. It would turn on, start the car, turn the car off and shift gears and drive. But when you shut the car off the key wouldn't come out. So I took the screws out of the shift lever and pulled it up about 3/16 to 1/4 inch and then I could get the key out. I double checked the installation of the button but didn't see any errors. As long as I left the screws out of the shift lever I could manually hold it down with my hand while pushing the button and I can shift. I had to hold the shift lever handle down because the button has a sloped ramp inside that rides on the slanted end of the pushrod in the shifter handle and if you don't hold it down it will just push the shift lever handle up instead pushing the shaft down. I tried several different times to realign the handle but if I pushed it down far enough to get the screws back in I couldn't get the key out. My guess is there is something just a little different about this button and it isn't letting the internal rod that disengages the key lockout system come up far enough to disengage and allow the key to come out. That rod doesn't stick up above the shaft as referred to in this video so grinding it off to make it shorter isn't an option. I don't understand why that would be sticking up anyway. It was working fine with the old broken button held in by a rubber band and tape but with the new button I can't get the key out unless I let the shifter knob or handle come up a little which means the screw holes no longer line up. WTF.

It is a mystery, the vehicle in the video was missing the button. When I attempted the repair it would not work properly, so the modification was needed.
@joewest826
@joewest826 3 года назад
@@chriskolar A mystery indeed. It worked with the old broken button but wouldn't work with the new button. I went back to Amazon and started looking at the 1-3 star reviews and found several people who had the same exact problem as me. Almost word for word. One commenter said that they were able to remove some material inside of the button to give the slanted metal piece room to come up farther and then it worked correctly. Unfortunately he didn't say where exactly he removed the material or how. I will be trying this approach tomorrow. Then if I can't get it to work properly I'll try another button, but not another one from China. Worst case I can drill and tap 2 new holes to accommodate where the handle works. Thanks for the reply.

I'm in the same exact boat. I can't sell a car with a key that is stuck in the ignition. This video is a great reference, but I'm positive that white plastic rod has been lifted up at least halfway. Mine is sticking out about the same as this vid, may just try this solution. Have to take it apart first.
@chriskolar
@chriskolar 3 года назад
@@kingwein89 hope you get it done. I was surprised that this is a common problem.
@joewest826
@joewest826 3 года назад
@@kingwein89 Did you replace the Chrome shifter button and then have this problem. If you did then you don't need to look any further than that button. If you can take the handle off and let the rod come up by it own volition and then you can remove the key...it's the button. Don't forget you have to push down the brake to remove the key. This is a common problem with aftermarket shifter buttons, especially Chinese buttons. If you didn't replace the button take the handle off and check to see if the button has started to break and is not letting that rod come up high enough to let the pin contact the microswitch allowing the key to be removed. That's actually what happened to mine. After I removed the broken pieces there was enough of the ramp left to still operate the rod. I actually drove it like that while I was waiting for the new part to arrive. I held the button in with a rubber band and scotch tape because the part that broke on the button internally was the part that kept it from flying out. Basically the end of the buttons internal ramp broke. But when it was still stuck inside that button it wouldn't let that little rod come up high enough to remove the key. This thing drove me crazy for a minute. Check that button before you go sawing off any parts. And just so you know...you can actually drive the car without the shifter handle installed. You just have to put a rag or something over the angled metal tip that sits of top of the plastic rod so you can push it down without hurting your hand. If you have to drive your car while waiting for the part (button), then this is an option. WARNING!!! DON'T!!! LOSE THE TWO PARTS THAT SIT ON THE TOP OF THE SHAFT. The plastic guide and the metal rod tip that sits on top of the shifter tube. Just take the handle off and see what's up. The button is spring loaded so when you pull the handle up the button will fly out. The plastic guide and metal tip described earlier may stay inside the handle when you pull it off so be aware of that. Just lightly hold it when you pull up on the handle. Good luck.

@chriskolar

It has a metal horseshoe shaped clip holding it. You will have to use a hook tool to reach in and pull it. I had a spare seat from the junkyard and looked at it. I tried to pry it off and it will not pry off you have to pop that retainer out to release it. It is designed to be installed easily at the factory and not have any parts hanging off to remove it.

When I put the screws on, my key wont come out. If I leave the screws out, my key comes out. Thoughts?
@chriskolar
@chriskolar 10 месяцев назад
When the screws are out it allows the pushrod to lift up a bit. This allows the lockout shoe to shift to the correct position and then the key can be removed. Did you watch the complete video? The first part explains the operation. The action you need to take is shortening the push rod length.
