I know this is an old video but for people just watching it this is valuable information. I have way too many rods and reels and sometimes I end up spending too much time trying to decide what to take on a fishing trip. Two good reels and maybe 4 rods and you can go after anything. Sure, you probably won’t catch a 12’ tiger shark without the right equipment but then again you better be prepared for that with everything else or you can get hurt. So, two decent reels in the sizes he recommends will go a long way and make packing for a fishing trip so much easier. I have been on several trips where some rods and reels never make it out of my car and I wonder why I brought them in the first place. And, with the reels taken care of you can focus on everything else like tackle and technique.
I use the 4000 for for everything from casting soft plastics to bottom fishing.. 6000 battle will catch a nice tuna ..lol great vid keep them coming bro
@@danielmedhurst5737 I have Penn 3500 and 4500 that I have 20 lb braid on. Now I have reels from 4500 to 10500 in Penn it all depends on what type of fishing that you are planning on doing. When I am shark fishing my shock leaders are 200 lbs steel wire.
I have two of the Penn Fierce III's, one in 3000 for inshore and pier/beach fishing, and one in 5000 for offshore trolling and bottom fishing. Couldn't be happier with them!
Great video . I got my jig master 500 passed down to me from my uncle that passed away I didn’t use it for a long time because I have newer reels but finally I got around to cleaning and servicing it and have used it for two seasons now And I have to admit it’s becoming my favorite real because not only does it hold sentimental value but it’s a workhorse!
Penn Fierce 2 4000, Ugly Stik GX2 7' Medium Heavy. You talked me into saving a few bucks vs the Battle 2 in an earlier video. In the market for a surf rod and reel, so this was helpful. Thanks for the great content as usual!
The Pen reels are GREAT. I love their drags. But, when you get my age you don’t care quite as much about cost. So I will buy A Shimano witch also has a GREAT drag but, also supports a FANTASTIC ball barring supply for an unequalled smooth action.
Penn battle 6000 and a shimano spheros 6000. The largest fish I caught with the battle was a 20-25 lbs striped bass. It handled it very well and the spheros is largely untested (fish wise.) Both have been dropped and dunked..... and only this season (first in six or seven seasons ) I needed to open the battle to remove some grease and sand from having dropped it.
He isn’t lying. Just found the Penn Fierce II 4000LL and 6000LL for $18 and $22 respectively at Dicks in Myrtle Beach. Every sport store yo go to, just ask. Never hurts. Same store I got a tiger elite jigging rod for $45. 🤷🏼♂️
i fish everything everywhere on 1 reel 1 pole and all the time same silk size. Never had any problems idk whats up with all the choices. Everything together with baits cost me like 100$
Go for Okuma. They're under Pure fishing now. That's mean, they're good stuff. Azores with twin drag and twin stopper is awesome. Helios are good and light
You nailed it bro! I fish at the jetti and small 4000 one for catching fish up to 20lb and bait. The Penn 7500ss for bigger fish, but the 8500 is more adequate.
Hey man, I just found your channel today. I just wanted to thankyou for your awesome awesome content. You're super informative and fun to watch. The videos are all of great quality. I'm not salt water fishing anytime soon, but I'm trying to get into kayak fishing and I am learning so much from you. Thanks man.
Penn pursuit 3 is pretty good so far for me. Haven't really caught anything big yet but a 4000 holds 260 yards of braid. 4000 is around 50 dollars too.
Stradic fl 2500 15 lbs braid 20 pound mono leader on a 7 ft medium or medium heavy rod (teramar) I have caught massive striper /blue still fun going lm bass fishing with it switch to a 8 lb floro leader My surf is a 9 ft st croix triumph surf with a 5 k Diawa saltist spinning 20 to 30 braid but must admit I have a lot of stuff best reels right now for under 200 are the shimano stadic fl and the Diawa ballistic lt you will thank me later if you purchase one of them ...
What rod with the 4000? Looking at 20# braid and needing a new rod. Have the penn 4000 reel already. Looking at prevail II inshore spinning 7’ medium. Or calico jack 7’ MH
I got the 4500 spinfisher v because it was almost the same weight as the 3500 but has more line ect, I think I can catch almost any fish with it including small ones.
Okuma 4000 on a 9' Daiwa rod with 15 lb mono, okuma 5000 on a 10' Academy H20, Okuma 5000 on 11' ugly stick; all for surf fishing. Daiwa BG 2500 on a 9' clarus steel head rod and a Penn sargus 4000 on a 7' ugly stick for surf casting.
Ur right Yak! I hit garage sales when I see them and pawn shops too. Just found a penn battle 2 6000 without a scratch on it a a pawn shop for 50 bucks . And it was spooled with some high dollar mono too. Score!
i do alot of fishing and use only 2 size reels. as a matter of fact i just bought a penn pursuit4 4000 AND a pursuit4 6000 for only $70 total. both brand new in the plastic packaging. i have a guy who has a relative who is sponsored by penn and sells his unused spares when he gets a new shipment. after decades of being a shakespeare user im switching to penn and these are the 2 sizes i use.
I use a 3000 size reel for 30 lb test braided line and a 4000 series reel 50 lb test braided line and my reasoning for this is I don't like to use backing I actually use electrical tape to keep the braid from slipping and give it something to bite into. And secondly, I also don't like having more than 200 yards of line or any less than 150 yards of line and this is because anything over 200 yards of line just seems like a total waste since you don't need more than 200 yards of line in any situation out there and any less than 150 yards of line is not enough line.
You cant go wrong with the penn SS. I've bought them at fleamarkets broken and fix them myself. I even have some for parts. They last. SALUDOS.........
Great vid, bro. I’m in Grand Isle, La. and my 2 main combos are the Penn Spinfisher V in 3500 spooled with Power Pro super slick in 20lbs (which is actually smaller than the Persuit 3 in 3000) and a Penn Spinfisher V 6500 spooled up with 50lb suffix advanced superline braid. These 2 dude catch anything and everything.
The two combos I have are a Shimano Sedona 4000 with 20 lbs power pro with a 8ft medium heavy hurricane calico jack rod and the second one I have is a Penn fierce III 6000 with 25 lb mono on a 7ft medium heavy ugly stik gx2
I have a Daiwa Ballistic LT 3000 on a 10' Savage gear Salmonoid 15-35g gramm rod that i use for smaller lures (10-30 gramm) when coastel or pier fishing and that is sooo smooth (the reel price is 300,-us$ here in Denmark). I also just got a (brand new old stock) Penn Slammer 460 on a 9' Savage Gear Salt 1DFR shore jigging 40-80 gramm rod (and that reel is only 100,-us$ new on sale). I use it for bigger lures (30-80 gramm) That Penn is a tank and i have no worries getting saltwater on it when boat fishing.
Daiwa reels are sized larger than the other brands. Example : The 3000 series BG is equal to other brands 4000 series. It continues this way up and down the sizes.
Dan TheMan if you go to the gun desk at your local Academy sports they can put in the product number and auto check all the Academy’s within ya few hundred miles of you. That’s what I had to do. But I’m a Penn addict. I drove 2 hours for the SSV5500 for $35
just let me tell you something , you don’t need a massive budget to go salwater fishing . i’ve litteraly got a 70 dollar rod and reel combo and i’ve landed shark , tarpon , snapper , giant trevally, anything… but you can also handline , all the locals use that and catch massive fish
@@timpage5021 not to big l have double rig that l brought from walmart cost 97 cents which the weight on bottom n i was using green backs weight size depends on your rod mine calls for a 2oz hope this helps n good fishing buddy
The Penn Fierce has an live liner version which I like a 4500 size for live lining for yellowtail. Then I use a 3000 Series reel for making bait and fishing inshore. How to Penn Battle 8000 for sharks rays and sturgeon.
Thanks Yak.....just picked up a Penn 6500 ss....thought it was awfully big because of moving up.from my 3500.....until I saw your 8500!! Love your videos
73 now, so not headed out to catch much, as lately i'd mainly only be thinking of Hemmingway's best book about an epic effort to catch a big fish. but your video is one of relatively few with a few specifics for any mindful of any gifting opportunity, etc. thanks.
Want cheaper go for Okuma . They make good quality stuff. I go for size 2500 and 400. My Daiwa BG4500 have more lines than Shimano Sargosa 6000 ! I'm going for Okuma Azores and Helios next as they have water shield. The rod is usually uglystick and modified Berkley lightning rod than can jig 200g lead
Just invested in a 4000 shimano catana reel paired with a daiwa emblem pro 11 footer spooled with 30lb braid for beach fishing. Great video and tight lines! From India
Shimano Stella 18,000 with ace hollow core 80 pound braid with top shot on a Shimano Terez 7 foot 80 to 200 pound rod… Here in San Diego fishing off the boat or pier
I use 3500 and 6500 Slammer 3's. I've got six rods to choose from to match the type of fishing and size of fish I'm targeting. If I could only have one reel it would be the Slammer 3 4500 which I plan on getting for a tweener.
I have a 6000 series penn pursuit with 50lb braid for inshore and offshore fishing. I also have several old school restored penn jiggmaster 500 that I use fore offshore. I also have some 1000 series shimano spinning reels for trout and bass fishing.
I used to live in Tallahassee and miss fishing we go to panama for vacation every year but think I’m gonna stop somewhere to pick up a cheaper combo so I can surf fish while they all sleep what’s a good place to go before pc
I have the penn battle 2 3000 and shimano nascii 3000 and prefer the penn better. Only because of the drag system not to mention it holds more line(20lb braided line) than the shimano. Nasci is much smoother and friendlier when i cast plastics and light lures alike for 5-10 hrs.
Wish I had seen this video before lol. I live in PCB. I have a PENN Pursuit 2500, 4000, 5000, PENn Fierce 6000 and PENN spinfisher 8500 on 5 different rods. Got 2 10 foot poles with no reels and just ordered the PENN 10500. I know to many rods and reels
Penn battle 2 4000 for do anything on the beach east coast and from a yak. Your pushing the envelope on the 3000. Tight lines, clear skys and calm waters bud.
I'm using a Shimono Sedona on a ugly gx2 for bait fish and I use a penn 113hlw on a penn carnage 2 ulua to slide. This all on shore fishing here in hawaii
When you were fishing with Brant and the shark ate your fish. What pole were you using? Brant's poles don't seem to flex as yours do. They seem to mainly flex at the end. Yours seem to flex the length of the rod.
I need to remove this video from my watch history. I told my wife I need about 8-10 different types of reels and rods with about 2-3 of each size. I do not need her to see this until I've gotten an arsenal one day.
Hey Jack good video hey at the end of the video when you catch the hard tail what reel is that I know the rods a gx2 but I can't tell what the reel is it would look good on both of my gx2s thanks man tight lines man 👍😁
need help if you could, get a new 2500 for now and later on get something bigger for targeting biger fish like monster carps, king salmon, etc or do you think a 3000 could handle those fish and use it also for smaller fish ?
