Littering is bad, but hardly a high crime. $1000 fine and probation sounds about right to me. And these are minors. Teenagers do stupid things. We're all done stupid things when we were young. There are companies who are dumping literally tons of garbage into the ocean. US Cities are sending our garbage to China and the Third World. Once they leave our coastal waters there's little oversight of what happens to it. Unscrupulous companies dump some of it into the oceans. The little bit these kids dumped is just a drop in the bucket.

It’s just disgusting. It shows contempt and complete disregard for the very resources they are enjoying. So, heavy legal response imo is absolutely necessary. And community service somewhere somehow if possible to try and help clean up what they did.

Everyone on that boat should carry responsibility for what happened. No one made an attempt to stop the two that were dumping the trash overboard. The boat should have been impounded and the parents of the two minors should have been held accountable for the minors actions.
They need to be held accountable for their actions they knew exactly what they was doing and they should be punished by spending months cleaning the beaches and pay fines for their actions
It's sick how we catch folks doing bad things repeatedly and their defense is always "Others do it too", yet here we are with thousands of videos showing who does what. Anyone who's been to S.A. knows how trash is dealt with, not a thought for the Enviro. I've repeatedly, many times, seen this scene, including out of cars on main thoroughfares where my shock was met with; Eh it's not a big deal, meanwhile you can see trash everywhere. Welcome to US leaving bad customs behind!
They all went out to bump that crap so the whole lot should be fined no just the two lads and that boat could get crushed , just like they do with cars or truck who legally dump trash , no different
When I was in the Navy I served aboard an aircraft carrier. When we were out at sea and it came time to take out the trash we would take the plastic garbage bags to the back of the ship. I was told we couldn't just throw the bags overboard. So we would put them in a round metal container on the fantail. Here comes the fun part. The container didn't have a bottom. So the garbage bags would just fall out of the bottom of the container and float away behind the ship. Apparently at the time it was legal to do this. Fun times.
It seems a big deal because it's on the news. It is a big deal though, no matter what YOU think. Just because it doesn't affect you directly doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. Gross.
As a Yankee Schooner whose ancestors cherished the sea,to see this in itself outrageous me. That being said let's not ruin a 16 year old and a 17-year-old life with a felony! I think doing a massive amount of ocean cleanup with their friends and sitting in educational environmental classes will do the job just nicely. But giving them a felony NO! overkill.
