Heat Damage on Natural Hair
Hair Type 4b

Why did I use a hot comb?
The salon recommended that method based on my hair texture, I initially asked for a blow out and flat iron. Being that it was a natural hair salon I assumed "stylist knew best".
TIP OF THE DAY: Never Assume!
My Heat Styling Products Used (I took these to the salon)
Joico Silk Result Straight Hair Smoother (Blow Dry Cream)
Joico Silk Result Hair Protection Thermal Smoother
Stylist's Products Used During The Press of Death
Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Sheen Spray
Weapons of Mass Destruction Used:
Blow Dryer
Hot Comb (stove heated)
Rounded Flat Iron (stove heated)

And the stylist hair is locked..funny..my ma is a beautician and my whole life she has always said look at the stylist hair..whatever you are trying to get look at theirs first...my point is the stylist knows the damage of any by products and heat..hence why hers is locked..the same reason I couldnt let a women with weave care for my locks..

whatamelons I do this (all 3) myself when I want a straight style. If you do it right you won't get heat damage. That stylist was a clown that didn't know what she was doing

pocapaypay I was just thinking that...large tooth blow dryer, 1 pass of the hot comb and 1 pass of the flat iron, using hear protectant and taking it slowly....my hair always snaps right back. All those passes on her head made me almost pass out! 😰

This video made me angry. Not just as a natural haired woman, but as a natural stylist. I've been in this biz for 14 yrs, never, ever have I seen anything so deplorable! I use hot combs everyday, and finish with ceramic flat irons. My clients have no heat damage. I only press the first 1-2" of hair at the root and follow with the flat iron. There are SO MANY things that went wrong here. 1. you weren't properly blown dry. 2. the hot oil should have been rinsed from your hair, not dried into it. She essentially fried your hair like chicken. 3. There was still moisture at your roots, thus causing steam and damage to the roots. 4. No heat protectant was used. Oil is NOT a heat protectant!! Your hair needed a barrier between the tools and the hair. 5. WTF??!! Who does 11 passes over the hair? She never cooled the irons, I'm surprised your hair wasn't sizzling. I'm so so so sorry this happened to you. Not all natural stylists are created equal. Most don't take the time to get proper education. I will say this as well, take it easy on the protein. Most naturals think heat damage, I need protein. Maybe. But 3 treatments in 8 days is way too much. Protein should be applied every 6-8 weeks and immediately followed by a hydrating conditioner. Too much protein will actually cause breakage. My advise for those looking to heat straighten your hair is do your research. Read reviews, ask around. Check Instagram and Facebook pages, look at the person's work. ASK QUESTIONS!! If something doesn't seem right, or they aren't willing to educate you as to what they are doing, leave! It's not worth risking you mane. Feel free to check me out on IG @thekinkytruth @retreatsalonnc and Facebook retreat salon north Carolina Best of luck to you!

Bottom line: When she used both a hot comb and flat iron, while coating your hair with oil sheen and passing like 7 times... That did it. I really wished you would've had an understanding with her as to what she would do before she touched your hair. She sat there and fried your hair in front of the camera to get it as straight as she could because she was being filmed. She obviously needs to do her homework on natural hair maintenance.

My exact thoughts. I've been doing hair for 15yrs and licensed for 4 and I won't even attempt to play with a hot comb! It's too damaging to the hair and if you don't know what you're doing it can be tragic. And for her to be a licensed stylist she should have known better than this

QuiNatural Jackson I went to a hair salon that specializes in kinky and curly textures and in client education, and that's exactly what they told me too. The stylist actually said that if you need more than one, MAYBE two passes in some coarser areas, it means you didn't prep your hair correctly for the straightening.
@inbedduringcovid3005
@inbedduringcovid3005 9 лет назад
+QuiNatural Jackson OFF GIRL JUST CLEAN OFF. I thought that first time down it was going to take that piece clean OFF the bone. That means this stylist does this often if she knew it wouldn't. I think as salons that go for greatness does to rally together and run salons like this out. And if not salons then at least the stylist in there should have stopped her. So what about her feelings may get hurt. IT NEEDED TO GET HURT BECAUSE THIS IS A PURE HATE CRIME. This lady hates to work for others, hate doing hair thats why she got dreads, and hate to learn because clearly she knows (i know this bitch know) she needs to take her ass back to school..... no a different school because if she went to one she didn't learn shit but how to plug in a deep fry.

I just wrote a long reply to someone else who said the same thing, so I won't do it again, but it really depends on who's doing your hair. As many good hairdressers as there are, this lady was just flat-out awful. I hate those hairdressers who are like, "Oh, there is one small kink left in this strand. Better pass the flat iron over it a couple dozen more times. I would rather my hair give the general impression of straightness with one, maybe two passes, than be perfectly straight and disappear a week later.

+Abbi Williams, you would have thought that since she was being recorded she would have at least sectioned the hair and gone thru the proper steps the right way. The protection serum should have been disturbed evenly throughout the hair for proper protection. I'm not gonna lie, it was painful watching this whole process then seeing the inevitable when she wet her hair and her curls didn't return back fully.

It's not the heat that was the problem, it was the unnecessary excess of heat the woman put on her hair. If your hair is properly moisturized, protected, and styled with CARE; you won't get heat damage. I do a silk blow out on my daughters and my hair every 2-3 months for a trim, we've never gotten heat damage. My daughter hair reverts back to her tight coils, and is full of moisture.

IZATV I am so glad somebody else said what I have always known!! Thank you thank you! That is the only way to achieve that silky look. Besides if you think you need oil in your hair before you straighten it. You weren’t properly oiling it prior to.
@PURPLERAIN43
@PURPLERAIN43 6 лет назад
You cant straighten it with oil sheen however you can with blue magic grease if your going to use the hot comb. My grandmother was an old school beautician and that was all she used. Now for these newer beauticians who are not familiar with the hot comb the need to leave it alone and stick with the electric flat irons.

John Doe no they don’t . Thermal sprays contain dimethicone which is a silicone which coats the hair and dissipates the heat. Oils only fry your hair similar to a deep fat fryer.

Brittany Osman Even with Caucasian hair that heat would do mad damage and anyone with common sense would know that the amount of heat that woman was using was a huge no. I cringed the entire time she was using those tools on this poor girl's beautiful curls.
@ericka4cosmetology450
@ericka4cosmetology450 6 лет назад
PetroleumJellay obviously it wouldn’t work on caucasian hair because its straw like and naturally straight 😂 we need a little bit more power than a round brush & medium heat. The hot comb was fine, so was the flat iron! Ole girl was clueless or nervous because she was on camera. I do girls hair w/ a much looser texture and I take t through some things (bleaching & flat ironing) all in one day & when they wash their hair curls are still popping. Stylist didn’t have much knowledge, tis all.

Therefore, she wasted her time, now her hair is heat damaged.

When I saw the hot comb and all the smoke I knew it was damaged because she was cooking your hair at that point. Using that many heating tools was unnecessary!! What the WHAT??? She needs to be sued or confronted so that she can stop damaging her clients hair!!! I can't imagine how many other clients had a similar experience or worse. As far as your hair is concerned the only thing you can do is condition the heck out of it. Grow back healthier hair and cut out the damaged part bit by bit. I'm so sorry this happened to you :-(. I was MORTIFIED watching her blow dry, to straighten your hair with the omb attachment. She should have pulled and stretched your hair with just hot air and straightend it with blow dryer brush and then use the comb attachment. Yes, the hair was smoking, but it will do that anytime you put a product that contains oil. That was way too many passes over your hair. "HEAT TRAINING" Your hair isn't being trained, it is is slowly being burned away and thinned out, but I think you know that. I hope you are able to find an EXPERIENCED stylist to help you when you want blow out your hair! Good Luck!

I'm a licensed cosmetologist, the stylist using oil sheen was wrong but she needed to use some kind of heat protectant. Steam while using hot tools is normal to a point if you smell burning then the heat is too high. 3 protein treatments in 8 days is way too much should have been conditioning or moisturizing treatments. To much protein will make your hair more brittle.

And I had always felt uneasy whenever I got a blow out because of all the steam, but sweet Jesus of Nazareth; You should have realized all those passes were way too much and stopped her. Although, this is why I don't go to salons. I don't trust those betches, and I'm always paranoid, being black and all, that the black hair dresser will intentionally sabotage my hair. Like hell I'm putting myself in that predicament. >-
@shermz2003
@shermz2003 9 лет назад
Don't understand why you allowed her to blow-dry, press then flat ironed your hair. You could have achieved the same look, perhaps better, just by getting a blow-out. (Dominican Blow-out achieved with a blow dryer and a flat iron if you choose).
@shermz2003
@shermz2003 9 лет назад
When I get a blow-out, it's only done with a blow dryer and flat iron. I don't have any hair issues with that. Sometimes, if I want more body, I just let them do the blow-out without the flat iron. But a blow dry, press...and Iron? That was too much.

That's why I don't do roller sets. That's a waste of time.

I agree. But you have to find the right Dominican salon because some of them are just as negligent. The one I go to is all bout healthy hair natural or relaxed. She doesn't do roller sets of natural hair, she will Bantu knot your hair and sit you under the dryer just long enough. She does use the blow dryer and flat iron tho. But Ive never had heat damage with her... Plus I always do a protein deep condition after getting my hair straightened so it reverts back

I always had my hair long, but since the late 40z now 55, the shoulder length is cool, I have a round face, so the fuller on top and sides of my head, make my face smaller, and it fits me at my age...th younger gals can have long hair, im disabled, and cant use the curling iron or blow dryer, but the cut is fine, i just tease it here and there, and wah lah..im ready to tackle the world...

You should really try and stop taking mess and instead get your body alkaline. The media do more damage than good. You need to set your body twice a year. If you do that you boost the immune system and the immune stem goes in a heals

I am a 55 year old black woman never put any chemicals in my hair not even a color and I still have a full head of hair rocking my salt and pepper and constantly getting compliments from men, women, African American, Caucasians Asians and the list is endless. I have been a natural hairstylist for more than 40 years now retired. A head full of hair determines how you take care of it also determines if it's in the genes. Every one of us on this Earth have circle hair and the circle are different sizes rather you are an African American, Caucasian, Asian and it does not matter your race you have circle hair. This may shock you but there is no such thing as 4B 4C 4D whatever they are calling it out here. The circle of your hair depends on the dimensions of the natural circle of your hair that has not been altered. The fact is all of us have circle hair however some may be tighter, little looser or somewhere in between. Stop worrying about the length and just take care of your hair. If you are losing hair it is because you are damaging the follicles in addition it depends if you have a serious illness, taking medications, not eating healthy, and it could be also in the genes regardless if you are man or woman. I recommend that you follow Pamela Ferrell she is the first natural hair specialist and the owner of Cornrows and Company in the District of Columbia follow her on RU-vid or if you live in the area contact her so she may assist you. I also recommend to you all purchase her book that will help you with your hair journey. I want to leave you with this stop teasing each other just because someone may be wearing a weave or wig. You really don't know their circumstances. There are women and men out here that suffer alopecia or some other problems. They are very sensitive about that. I know this message is very lengthy but I have seen women and men lose their hair due to serious illnesses and on medications causing serious thinning of the hair or baldness. It is very very hurtful to joke about this so please just try to be a little more sensitive to what they may be going through. God bless you all.

Hair dressers are the worst! They don't care at ALL about the health of your hair. All the ones I've been to just RIP a comb through my hair, not being gentle at all. They're just crap lol idk how any of them get through hairdressing school.
@SraTacoMal
@SraTacoMal 10 лет назад
It depends on your hair dresser. Several years ago, my hair was terribly unhealthy and my new stylist couldn't do anything for it, so she told my mother and me that unless she was allowed to cut off the worst of the damage, she would refuse to see me any more. Sure, some percentage of them just do their job of washing and styling hair without caring about health, but everyone's hair is different, so it's difficult to know what works. A good hairdresser is someone to whom you can take or tell of the products you know work for you, will do what works for your hair, won't do what you don't want them to, and just adds a professional touch to what you do yourself.

Yah. She should have gone to shop where they do natural hair. Or like an african shop. Most hair dressers will burn your hair out to get it straight. A good hair dresser would have suggested that she go to another salon if they don't know how to keep natural hair, not everybody's hair can be straightened by irons and not get damaged, our hair is very fragile and should not be fried. 🌺

it's all because of jealously. They're envious that your hair is healthy and wonderful while theirs is awful. Which doesn't make sense because as a hair dresser not only should they care for your but theirs as well. Then everyone will be happy. Right?

Sorry that happened. But besides the hair issue, this is a good lesson on why it's important to be a strong confident woman who is able to STICK UP FOR HERSELF! Instead of smiling politely and saying nothing, you should have hopped out of the chair, and said "Excuse me miss, I have been trying to grow out my hair and be gentle with it, so could we please not use any heat today". Then wait until she unplugs it to sit back down. I don't know why so many people turn mute when they enter a salon or a doctor's office.

I'm a professional hairstylist and I can boldly say without a doubt that she fired you up darlin. All those passes through your hair was unnecessary, she took away so much of you elasticity which is why you no longer have the snap back you had before the heat damage you received. A good stylist should consult with you first to see what you main goal is. If it was just for a length check, blow drying would have been sufficient enough. To add insult to injury, all that blow drying, pressing and flatironing, you would think it wouldn't have gotten so freezy so quickly. Apparently she didn't prepare your hair properly (starting at the shampoo bowl). Sorry this happened to you doll. I suggest next time to sit down and consult with a stylist and in detail tell her/him what you are trying to do. You should be able to pick up from that Congo if they understand you and vice versa.

+Natalie Brooks absolutely I had been natural for almost 4 years and decided to get a relaxer. And I vowed to myself that I wouldn't just let anyone do my hair. So before getting my relaxer I literally grilled every stylist I met with to see what the process would be and if they really cared about the health of the hair. And it's sad to say it's a lot of stylist who are just in it for the money. But the few who actually care about the integrity and health of your hair, I commend them.
@nataliebrooks77
@nataliebrooks77 8 лет назад
+Yasmeen TySha Yes, it is hard to find a stylist who will not only do right by the client but also have a good attitude and hook up some hair. Many stylist focus on making money more than making their work speak for itself (in a positive way). I encourage clients to grill/question/inquire and get all the info they need to feel secure in knowing they have chosen the right hairstylist. If the stylist has an attitude problem, don't pick her, trust me she may become a problem later. Although I am the professional, I still must respect the client's feelings, questions and suggestions about THEIR. So yep, grill the crap out of these hairstylist, its your hair, its your choice who to give your money to. We hairstylist need to be humble and hear what our clients/potential clients are asking for.

Ok...I had to stop watching immediately after the 3rd pass thru with the hit comb plus she used oil sheen instead of a heat protector. The whole process was horrible and you sat through it all...WHY? WHY? WHY? Speak up, you are your only advocate. I do my own at home with the straightening comb and flat iron. But a good heat protectant is a MUST. Along with a quality flat iron.

She doesn't know the technique of pressing hair. The hair is straightened from the back smooth end of the comb which means you have to twist your wrist as you pull down on the hair strands. My mother taught me. She had a beauty shop over 60 years. She learned how to press to make it last. The continual repasses is damaging the hair. If she needed to repass, she needed to let it cool off first. Hair carries heat and moisture...tiny bubbles within which tears down the cuticle bonds.
