I've had the 2WD version of this car in Australia for almost 15 years and I love it. I got a Tesla Model 3 a couple of yeara ago but end up giving it to my mother recently and I'm using the van as daily driver again.
Hey Nathan, love the videos and tips. I just got my similar Hiace today going through all your videos and practically going to slowly copy a lot of what you've done to your van to mine. you're a goldmine of info. you're a legend.
I relate to the connection you have with your van! I've felt like that with a few cars, especially my Tacoma. Someone hit my tacoma and totaled it which led me to the HiAce! Very glad it did
The only underbody coating I use is NH oil, fluid film, or woolwax. That rubber stuff can destroy the frame because it can't breathe, also the oil lubricates things, and penetrates. I live in northern New England where the roads are covered in salt half the year
Hey Nathan! Great vid mate, love your vids! Glad to see you’re still loving your beautiful Hiace - I laughed when you talked about just admiring your van because I do the same! I just love looking at that thing - super unique. Your Hiace sounds very throaty - is that a stock exhaust? Does it have a catalytic converter? Also…would you consider doing an EGR delete on your van? I have mixed feelings about doing it, although many swear by it. And last question…do you still drive with the O/D off below 60-70? I have been since watching your vid on that. Thanks again mate, and sorry for all the questions!
Hi thanks allot. Stock exhaust no cat. Stainless screw on downpipe tip. Not doing an egr delete and here's why. Engine runs cooler with egr. People will argue otherwise like I once did until I found out what I didn't know. It's 25 years old and runs fine. If it gets blocked up at 30 years, I'll just clean it up and put new gaskets on and drive it for another 30 years. I drove with od on. Only comes off if I need it locked in 3rd for heavy or long hills under 80kph.
I’ve owned my 98 super custom for a year now and I’ve only got two slight annoyances one is fuel economy is very average I wish I could switch between 2wd and 4wd and the second is a shaky idle I’ve changed the rear engine mount and that made a slight difference but I have a feeling I need to do the front two or get a tune other then that it’s nice to own such a unique and capable van that suits my lifestyle
The foam deteriorated because of age, my middle seat turned into foam powder, and my rear is on it's way out. Lucky my front seats are in good shape. All the foam in the ac vents is gone now also. Nothing made of foam with last 25+ years.
I'm assuming as much, same engine so the ecu would just need to be swapped over so it knows it has more gears. Maybe some wiring connectors so the dash lights work, although might be plug and play.
