Not even surprised. I know a man who had one of these with a little over 900k miles. 2 liter, 5 speed manual. Rust killed it for a finish but with that mileage, he got his moneys worth. Said it was the best car he ever owned and actually misses it. He said when it clocked 200k he was considering changing cars. Then 300 and 400 and so on until it gave up the ghost. Other than the rust it was still a very solid car mechanically. Always started for him

My grandma still has her 99 ex v6. It’s super reliable, has plenty of power, it’s definitely fun to drive. She hardly drives as well, and every time it starts up perfectly and purrs haha! She says it’s mine when she feels like she can’t safely drive anymore, which is great because I learned to drive in it. It’s definitely staying in our family. Being born in '89, I've ridden in and driven so many of this gen, as all my friends, teachers, etc had one. I remember every gen of Accord being EVERYWHERE over the years, one time in 2012 I pulled up to an intersection next to another 1990 Accord in my own, then across the street there was two other 4th gens at the light next to each other and I remember thinking "only in an Accord". We've owned every generation from '86 - '02. I wish we were able to keep the third generation, that one was special. After owning them all it's without question that the highest quality Accord was the 4th gen and they were the most striking. 5th gen improved on the 4th gen in some ways but took fair size a step back in overall quality and character despite being incrementally more refined, and the 6th gen was a bit more refined but by then it had gained a lot of weight and there was SIGNIFICANT cheapening in design, character, and materials then. Also in the reliability of the automatic transmissions. To date I still have a 4th and 5th gen EX's, both well over 300k miles. Our '02 was also a SE model in that pretty nice fire pepper red, as Honda called it. 276k miles and all original when we gave it away to a family member, it's still kicking!

@@jay.fromthebay Oh wow - I wish I lived then to see that - it must have been awesome to get into a Honda and know that you were in good hands vs the American Cars (I think trucks were decent, cars not so much). That's so good to hear :)!! The 6th is so beautiful in my opinion! I love its interior - so cleanly styled and ergonomic. I have a 2015 Civic EX Sedan - with the CVT :/. That transmission is my biggest gripe - it can be jerky, but 90,000 miles so far it hasn't technically been problematic. I want to do a manual swap so badly - but I'm not sure where/how to do it. But, I love it overall. Great features for the time and pretty solidly built. The R18 engine is a gem - very smooth. Thanks for replying, btw - it's nice to chat with car guys. I had a 1998 2.3L Accord. Bought it from a no credit car dealer after Hurricane Sandy took away my mint condition 2003 Accord back in 2012. I was in college and I just needed a car. Even with only 73k miles on the odometer, that 1998's transmission slipped and jerked like crazy. It was obvious why the previous owner sold it. Eventually at 76k it gave out all together. Great car otherwise, to this day I have yet to find a more comfortable driver's seat. It even had the Honda 6 disk CD Changer in the trunk. Winded up selling it to a neighbor, and he had it for around 4 years. I saw him on the road with it countless times. Recently I purchased a 2022 Honda Civic. It reminds me so much of my 1998 Accord. The perfect size sedan.

a friend of mine's Dad had like a 1992 Honda Accord with a 6 disc changer also. Was that an option from the dealer? My buddy always made a big production out of loading up the 6 cd's we could switch between before heading out to the movies or wherever. As I type this Im thinking I doubt there was a 6 disc changer option in 1992, he must have after-marketed it. It was still in the trunk though as they were back then.

Great review! :-) I owned the same one- yes, same color in Grandpa Gold about ten years ago. A clump of granite is less reliable than these cars hey.... I got rid of mine with about 215,000km (134,000 miles) and it was just getting started. All of the motor seals were tight as a drum, it didn't leak or weep a drop of oil, my mechanic simply raved about it. In fact, I've become so disillusioned with modern day cars simply being too "techy" , that last week I went and bought another one. It too has about 200,000km on it and honestly it'll probably do double this mileage. Best Accord Honda ever made in my opinion.

I have a 98 accord coupe lx 5 spd (cg2), first year of the sixth gen. With the f23a1 engine that makes 150 hp. I noticed this one is probably the f23a4 (since it has the green top valve cover (the ulev system). The f23a4 makes less power (around 138) but gets a bit better mpgs. You can tell if a 6th gen has the f23a1 because it will say vtec kinda like how the h22 with vtec does (except the f series is sohc of course). Definitely a fun car for sure, mine has been abused by previous owners with cheap mods and such. However I have been putting some better mods and fixing it up making it actually look decent. I definitely love this gen.

I have one of these in green. Family friend got it from her aunt(original owner) in 2018. At that time it only had 85k miles on it. Our friend drove it a bit hard for a year and half and blew the head gasket. She parked it, bought a new car left it parked in her yard. The interior was immaculate. The body was ok, but in better shape than 99% of the ones on the street. She was going to junk it and I offered to match whatever the junk yard was going to give. They were only offering $200. The offer was too low so she called and said "If you can tow off my yard, its your." It had 115k miles on it when I got it. To date I have spent about $2500 in repairs and parts replacement. Every issue I have had was due to wear and tear. Not a big deal because parts are cheap and there's enough room in the engine bay to do the work yourself. Very reliable, cheap to fix and I don't see myself parting with it anytime soon.

My parents had the 1998 Accord V6 and my friend's parents had the 2.3. The V6 was so much more luxurious, awesome leather seats, fake wood trims on the dash, automatic climate control. Was an amazing car. As amazingly reliable as the 3.0v6 and the 2.3 engines were... the transmission on the V6 would die by 120 000 to 150 000km... it was a weak transmission and certainly didn't last when abused. My parents also had a 1998 Acura CL 3.0 Both those cars sharing the same transmission, both those cars had the transmission replaced around 130000km. The accord, it was when my brother drove it. The CL, was after my dad sold it to a friend of mine so yea, both transmissions failed under abuse.

@kingxcamm
@kingxcamm 2 года назад
Usually they are much cheaper because the car is so old. Many people I know still drive them as high school/college cars. A local mechanic can replace one for about $1100-$1500. A pretty good price when the rest of the car is in good shape, blows cold air, and is well optioned. These engines and the physical car itself is excellent so its worth the price of repair. Not many 18+ year old cars are worth a transmission replacement.

Original body and trans at 123k but my trans just gave out..after a year of owning it it was evident the engine blew a head gasket and previous owner had neglected it. Got it at 98k miles. I have an accord with 230,000 miles on the clock. Zero gearbox or engine troubles. 1.8 petrol. Yea it drank petrol and oil for the fun of doing it for 20 years but it kept going. In the full 25 years of that cars existence the engine was never opened. Best car that has ever been in my family. Its outlived many other cars that simply passed through the family. Interior is pure 90s style, cloth but near immaculate bar 1 thumbnail size blemish on the drivers seat. 5 speed manual box which had its only clutch replacement at 209,000 miles. Enough of that, i recon these cars were very under appreciated, and so they may be a future classic. Theyre not a rolls royce, theyre not a race car, theyre reliable and they have this certain tweak on cars that you dont see today. The perfect mix of quality, modernisation and olschool all in the 1 package. Talking as a european honda accord owners perspective btw. Has been the best car in my family by a long shot. I've had 4 of these 6th gen Accords all manual. Things to look out for, first and foremost the automatics are garbage so get a manual. Second oil consumption. Third there is an electrical issue that causes the car to shut down while driving, Honda says it's the ignition switch but it's more than that. Now the good about the car in sedan form is very practical, comfortable, simple design, easy ergonomics, good handling and decent fuel economy. In the coupe it handles better because of a different suspension setup, seats are a little more bolstered, looks sporty and still pretty practical and I love the nsx inspired taillights. I've had 2 sedans and 2 coupes but again all manual.
@everzamora9031

I know that electrical issue. It's the sensor down behind the main crankshaft pulley. Code would always come up as ig switch or distributor then I found the culprit. Other than that solid cars. And totally agree solid cars but avoid the autos. Or have a couple handy auto trans in stock. They are cheap.

@@pinut187 Yes the automatic is still an issue in the 5th gen. When test driving it do these three things, check wide open throttle up to 70mph get on the highway, check gradual throttle in town up to 45mph and check it under 3/4 throttle at 55-60 mph. What you are checking for is if the gears al slipping between shifts. Get the Carfax for the vehicle as the transmission might have already been replaced, how many miles does this coupe have, and how much is it? Things to consider as a replacement of an automatic will run you from $1,500 if you are doing it yourself up to $3,500 at a shop. If you can find on with manual even better.

Get good with a ball joint pressure and get a manual and you'll almost never have an issue.

Still drive a 93, same color. I must say I think the styling was better in the 90s than the early 2000s but otherwise pretty much the same car as far as motor and trans.

One detail he left out is. Not only are the new hondas not as reliable, but thier also not as sporty either.the new accord no longer offers a v6 or a turbo 4 cylinder like in previous generations. If you want a performance version you have to buy a manual si type r civic or integra,tlx.but not everyone can drive manual or afford an acura

To be fair, Honda's CVTs are towards the more reliable end in the CVT realm, and their 10AT are far more reliable than their 5AT from the 2000s and 6AT and 9AT from the 2010s.

Had a 1997 SE which I bought new. Is it possible to like a car and yet admit it was nothing that special? Mine was reliable but always seemed a bit underpowered, seats were hard (my back killed me after a couple hours riding in it) and in most ways was fairly unspectacular. Good car it was, but these things do take on a bit of mythical hyperbole.
