In this video, I replaced the power steering fan on a 2005 MINI Cooper S with a manual transmission. Automatic models are similar but may need removal of a plastic cooling fan duct (4 phillips screws).
Time needed: About 15 minutes.
Tools needed: Vehicle ramps, 13mm socket and ratchet.
This is where I ordered the replacement fan: (BMW/MINI Part number 32416857718) www.outmotoring.com/mini-coope...
Torque spec: 88 in-lbs

How would I know if it's the power steering pump?
@tombanes

the power steering fan fuse is in the car's left kick panel fuse block. it is not listed as a "fan " fuse, but parking distance control. in my car it was F40 5amp. this fuse works to send signal to turn on. the relay is buried in the right kick panel

I have 06 mini non s and I heard the ps fan and fuse are tied to regular radiator fan. I jumped power from batt and fan works fine, replaced temp sensor still cant get fan to work so maybe the ps fan is bad and fuse?

Hello, my R50 Power steering cooling fan when it switches on it does not goes off...it keeps running unlikely before it goes on with the engine cooling fan comes on and goes off when the engine fan stops....any way to solve this issue..am worried if it keeps running full time it will burn out..any solution to the problem??

@@joshuametta9718 The PS fan and the LOW speed Rad fan ( stage 1) comes on and stays on whenever the AC is on and the HIGH speed fan (Stage 2) will go on and off whenever the system warrants it. If your LOW speed fan does NOT work you may be perceiving the HIGH speed fan as your "Fan coming on" and when it shuts off the the PS fan stays on since the system is commanding it still because the engine is still at that higher temp. If in fact your low speed fan does work and your AC is not on than I would assume your PS relay in the right kick panel is stuck in the closed position. Hope this helps and I apologize if you already have this information.

Good video. I have an 06 mini we just bought, our rad fan at idle wont engage, I hot wired from battery both low and high speeds work fine, works when AC is on, I swapped relays under hood it works with with AC on, just change gas speed when i swap relays, I thought coolant temp sensor, changed it, but still not fan. Could the PS fan and or fuse be the issue?

So I replaced the fan and it's not the problem. Have been searching utube and cannot find a solution. I have something that stays running and it's vibrating the power steering reservoir. I can't see what is making the noise. Can you help?

Anybody tell me there the power cable for this fan comes from on the car? My car doesn’t have a fan. The new pump will come with on I think but where does it connect?

I was thinking the exact same thing... if you find out; please keep me posted because $355 ( minus tax and labor ) is a bit much for a 15 minute job !!!

@@GuiSeppe_Rae I’ve been told in the U.K. they never came with a fan and therefore the car is unlikely to have the connection. So when I do get a new pump I probably won’t be fitting a fan.

Hmm thanks for the video. Hmm I have a question. the fan should work all the time? Or it has timer or heat sensor to make it stop in between? Thanks
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 лет назад
Faisal Shukri The fan comes on whenever the radiator fan kicks on, or when the power steering pump is running. If you have a helper turn the steering wheel while you're watching the fan with the engine running, you should see the fan kick in.

@@dougjamesvandals It's been two years so it might not help but, the cause could be the harness. Check the harness voltage.

Hi, Your impact driver is very nice . would you please tell me the name of driver .
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 5 лет назад
Sure. I will note that it is not an impact driver, as it does not have impact pulses to tighten or loosen nuts/bolts. It is an electric ratchet. Here's a link to the exact model I own. I love it - I use it everyday! www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Fastening/2457-21

So why would this fan need to be replaced? What was the old part doing/not-doing?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 лет назад
These fans have a high failure rate, possibly due to its proximity to the ground and being in the path of road debris. Its purpose is to cool down the electric power steering system. The fan in this car started making loud noises whenever it turned on. The bearings in the fan motor were corroded and were just about to fail.
@nintendiehard
@nintendiehard 7 лет назад
Makes sense. I see that both the old and new part look pretty similar. How can I tell if I have the onld one? I have a manual, so it's probably going to have the protective grill still.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 лет назад
Early MINIs (2002) didn't come with a fan at all, though many had fans retrofitted by the dealers under warranty. Very old fans (if memory serves, up to the mid 2003 model year) don't have the protective grille at all. Later ones came with a grille. And the most recent revision has the grille plus a square box in the wiring, which I believe houses a thermal circuit breaker (seen at 2:08). The latest revision also has additional seals on the motor shaft, to prevent water/debris from contaminating the motor itself. If you live near a MINI dealer, I'd suggest you contact them or bring your car in. There's a recall on the power steering system on these cars, and many parts of the power steering system will be replaced free-of-charge if there is a problem found. See this link: www.google.com/url?sa=t,static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2015/RCORRD-15V660-7070.pdf In my case, and the case of my client - we live 412 miles away from the nearest MINI dealership...and we would also need to take a 12hr ferry ride before starting the 412 mile drive. It was just cheaper/easier to buy a fan than be bothered trying to get MINI to cover the trip and associated expenses to do the recall.
@nintendiehard
@nintendiehard 7 лет назад
I see. I honestly didn't think the recall would still be good for me, since it's a fairly old vehicle and I'm pretty sure I'm at least the third owner. I'll have them check it out though. Thanks.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 7 лет назад
It shouldn't matter if if you're the original owner or not - at least when it comes to recalls. Still worth a shot, especially if you have failed components that could be covered under the recall.

If the fan is badd will that cause your steering to be hard?
@AKJeeper

A bad fan could cause the power steering system to overheat and eventually lead to power steering pump failure.
