That's the thing about the Bangle designs. They created a design template for basically all sedans and SUVs over the last 20 years. They may have been controversial at the time, but they have aged gracefully and still looks like cars coming off the production line 20 years later. The E39 may be the best 5 Series, BMW and sedan ever, but you can tell it's a product of the late 90s, whereas the E60 could have been produced anytime in the last 20 years.

Seems funny to think how heavily criticised they styling was at the time, yet as time has passed, the car has not only aged very well, but now looks positively subtle and restrained next to the current BMW lineup! That said, part of what made the E60 great is that it carried forward so much of the E39 mechanical parts!

BMW predicted future car design with the E60. I used to be a die hard E39 fan, owned both a 2000 Touring and a full 2003 M Sport. Got an E60 520i about 1 year ago and it has really grown on me. I personally prefer the non-M version with the E60. My car is in Titanium Grey, has sports suspension wich makes it just that perfect tad more agressive and tinted windows, all stock. Its great how it still draws attention and i had lots of compliments from people thinking the car is "new" or 2-3 years old. Love it!

I bought a 2010 528i with 70k miles one original owner in summer 2021 and it is amazing! I get complements often and people think it's a new car. I love it! I want another one.

I bought an F10, was gonna buy an E60 but decided the F10 was more modern all around, however in some angles the E60 makes the F10 look like the older model, always thought E60 was much more beautiful though. The interior of the F10 is 10x better than E60, which makes it an ever better daily driver imo.

this is a british review and they designate the model year as the year it was released. American designation classifies the model year as the following year of it's release.

The E39 is probably the most appealing, but the E60 seems to be the more solid choice. The new one, on the other hand, just looks so big and boring.

Solid and E60 don't really go together, if you want a more practical daily runabout with a sporty feel to it the E60 is the way to go, if you want to drive a real BMW with heritage and tradition you go for the E39, tho e39 might even be more practical because it's cheaper to own,more reliable, and is miles ahead in terms of quality, especially the touring.

Turned out to be less well built than the E39 although it didn't rust - the E39 rotted away in various places. RD03DVN soldiered on for 180k miles though!

That woman cannot possibly say the E60 looks better than the E39. The E60 does not look bad but you cannot say anything is better looking than the E39. A Topaz Blue M-Sport will look great in 50 years with angel eyes and fogs on. The interior however in 1000000000% better in the E39 than pre-facelift E60s. LONG LIVE THE E39 and straight sixes from Bavaria.
