2005 Chevy Aveo Front Wheel Bearing Replacement.
It's a rainy afternoon, but the weather is warm enough to do a quick DIY style wheel bearing replacement, on the slab of a two door garage... Lighting wasn't fantastic, and the placement of my light was a total fail. You can do this entire process yourself, with a decent set of sockets, a breaker bar, and some specialty kits that can be obtained through most "Loan-a-Tool" programs, various auto part and tool stores, as well as online. This car has seen it's day, but needs to see a few more, and for the benefit of those who may be doing a wheel bearing replacement, yourself, at home, for the first time, I HIGHLY recommend watching a few more wheel bearing replacement videos, to really get a feel for what you're doing, and what to watch for. THIS IS NOT A DETAILED "How-To", otherwise, I would have included all of the torque values to keep you from over tightening, snapping, or stripping any bolts, let alone having them fall out... (Ok... I lied a little ;) )
Ball Joint-to-Control Arm Nuts - (150 N.m/111 lb ft)
Drive Axle-to-Hub Nut - (300 N.m/221 lb ft)
Knuckle Assembly to Front Strut Bolts - (100 N.m/74 lb ft)
Splash Shield-to-Steering Knuckle Screws - (4 N.m/35 lb in)
Tie Rod End Ball Joint Nut - (45 N.m/33 lb ft)
Caliper mounting bracket bolts - (108 N.m/80 lb ft)
Inexpensive tools like the ones used in this video.
10pcs Ball Joint Press:

23-Piece FWD Front Wheel Drive Bearing Installer/Removal Tool Kit:

Manual Hand Impact Driver kit:

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actron(s) DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

Good video, sucks some of the footage went “poof”... constructive criticism I along with I’m sure most people don’t have a very long attention span and I think you could cut some of the footage out... also maybe you could show a closer more detailed shot of some of the things you’re doing... I’m going to watch again hopefully tomorrow when I do this myself and I’ll try to give some examples of what I’m talking about in this video. The only reason I’m commenting is because you asked us to like and comment so I am because I appreciate your video. Also I just realized you can reply to this so I have a question, I’m the sixth comment so Maybe you’ll see this and reply before I start to work, The mechanic told me my front driver side wheel bearing was bad he said that I should go ahead and replace the whole hub along with the bearing but he spoke broken English and doesn’t work on Chevys His exact words were as best I can remember were “you need to replace the bearing but you should probably replace the hub too because it might be damaged”... from the information I gathered on the Internet itseems like on some vehicles you can’t remove the bearing without damaging the hub. clearly that’s not the case in your video. Do you think the mechanic was right or do you think I only need to replace the bearing? I know that it’s hard for you to give a solid answer to that since you can’t look see or hear any of what is actually going on with my car so with the information given what’re your thoughts? Also I don’t make videos so take my criticism with a grain of salt, you’re obviously doing better in the world of RU-vid than I am it’s only my inexperienced opinion

i am more than happy to reply! I would also like to thank you for the constructive criticism! Replacing front wheel bearings, varies from vehicle to vehicle, and depends on design and the amount of damage, if any. While replacing the hub often IS NOT needed, sometimes it's just more cost effective (less labor). The outer side of the inner race, which is pressed, can be tricky to remove. Extreme heat and/or cutting is often required and CAN cause damage to the hub. This really should be at the discretion of the mechanic, that's replacing the bearing. Angles: Firstly the number one goal for me, is to get the job done. Filming the process, until I have an actual STUDIO to film in, is secondary. I TRY to perform these repairs like you were leaning over my shoulder to see what I'm doing, as I try to explain as much as I can for those who have never done this before, as well as adding tips and tricks learned, to help the more experienced mechanic that simply wants a PREVIEW of a job their about to do. As I gain new skills and techniques, I also gain feedback and experience to improve the quality of what I can bring to the viewers. Again thank you for watching, and thank you for commenting! please consider subscribing and recommending this content to others. EVERY SUBSCRIPTION helps me improve!

I tried to replace the bad rotor on my Aveo and couldn’t get those set screws out. I tried for so darn long. Even tried drilling them out. I assume maybe the rotor is rusted to the hub or something, but now I’m almost positive the wheel bearing is going out. I would guess it could be because of the rotor causing it to shake. Either way though, maybe this video will help me figure it out. Thank you for posting

Drill the head off the bolt with a 1/4 drill.(Just deep enough to takeoff the head ONLY) Then, strike to middle of the shiny area of the rotor, to "bounce" it off the hub. Once the rotor is off, optionally, use Vise-Grips to remove the remaining part of the screw. Rotate the hub, once the rotors is off, and check for smooth rotation. If you feel ANY "crunchiness" replace the bearing, too.

pay per task or per hour? I think as a professional mechanic you waste a lot of time by not having the right tools. here you need, for example, a press.

I can only fit just so many tools in my vehicle. I do NOT have a garage, so I must limit what I carry around with me.

Este reemplazo no pretendía ser perfecto. Solo tiene que durar un rato, y sea cual sea el diseño, cualquier falla será bastante audible antes de convertirse en una preocupación.

What keeps it "real" is not having the correct tools handy. Gotta have the "make it work" mentality, and the skills to not make it worse!
