The fight between Kimi Raikkonen (McLaren) and Fernando Alonso (Renault) at the 2005 Italian Grand Prix. Alonso finished in 2nd, while Raikkonen finished in 4th.
I just find amazing how 102 kg of fuel at that time only last 25 laps and today you finish the race with the same amount (the PU giving approximately the same power)! Not even mentioning the thermal efficiency reaching 50%! Despite the shitty sound, current F1 engines are true marvels of engineering.
if not because of fuel consumption and any other factor, the current PU actually can rev higher. hence producing quite a nice sound but I agree that current engine is much more efficient than they used to be
that was expected, because current engine isn't work solely as an "engine", the ICE and motor unit worked together as hybrid, hence why they called "power unit"
Thierry Bangun The hybrids has gone way down in price now. Leasing costs is the same as the V10/V8. The V10 was also crazy expensive when they were new and then got cheaper over time. Same story over and over again in F1, engine cost, engine cost and engine cost. It has always been a talking point throughout the last 30-40 years in F1.
@@prod.cozybeats2299 still a podium car and for the first fly away races it was. Believe me i am a kimi fan. i am just saying that alonso is overrated. Also in China 05 renault brought a suped up V10 and Renault had beaten Mclaren. If Mclaren had given them more of a fight Renault would of brought its new V10. Like in 1991 when Mansell and Willias decreased Senna's gap to 8 points. Mclaren hit back.
@@alexlazebat839 my understanding was always the Mclaren lacked reliability that year - understandable given that the 2005 car was just an evolution of the highly unreliable and failed 2003 car. I always understood Raikonnen’s season to be filled with grid penalties and such which may have hurt him in regards to the championship
I gotta say, Mild Seven Renault and Mclaren West are two of my favorite F1 cars of all time, right up there with JPS lotus, Marlboro Mclaren and Camel Williams. Good old days when children's favorite colours were cigarette brands.
David Fernández Bruh, I just get a sweet sensational feeling when I hear and see these cars. like my brain is about to burst with excitement. why don't they use these V10s anymore. 😭😭😭
@Harvey Lee you do know that most teams on the grid had their own versions of the mass damper? Renault was first to use it, but they also developed it much better than anyone else... It was a perfectly legal piece until the FIA decided to change a few rules in order to ban it.
best seasons of F1 so far.. amazing cars, amazing drivers, amazing rivalry, amazing regulary and amazing commentators.. what an era!! miss this momment.
MrStig691 kimi is not the same. Engines arent the same. Mid field drivers arent the same. Those days were midfield warriors, now that only fits with force india drivers
Formula Uuno Pure machines, drivers and tracks. Bravery did mean something. And no overtakes? How is it now then? Drivers say its almost impossible to do it now. Was it like one overtake on track in last race example... If you get close, no fight, push button and change place... Or try to RACE and get a penalty if you somehow manage to try pass. True racing... And cars says pröööööt.. F1 is crap now, it WAS...MANS sport. Glad there is good GT-Series now etc. Some actual RACING to watch.
Ok. But yeah, its quite stupid what they did, make the cars fasters because fan's pressure by adding more aero. They are just shooting on their feets again and again until F1 is gone, its joke now, cars are fast yes but feelings and everything that old F1 did bring is all gone. F1 should be noisy flat out racing on the limit from start to finish and driver in control, but instead we get this aerodynamics lawnmovers saving tyres and fuel from start to finish. F1's soul is ripped away, They are doing what is WEC-Series thing to do. Glad i did see the good last days of F1.
JPL083 f1 drivers always saved fuel and tyres. you just didn't hear about. cars these days start with less than the fuel limit. so that's not a limiting factor. oh please. people were complaining about Boring f1 in 2005.
Raikkonen in a McLaren. Closest thing I've seen to Senna. Kimi would have EASILY won this title and this Monza race, if not for the 3, 10-place grid place penalties (Monza, France, Silverstone), Hydraulics failure in Hockenehim, Driveshaft failure in Imola and cancelled race in Indy. Enough.
Kimi fans are the biggest sore losers ever. Always making up excuses. Closest thing to Senna is someone who has been rimming Vettel/Alonso/Massa for over a decade? Your standards are so low it's pathetic.
@GT012345tube Too bad Ralf easily beat Jarno in 2005 and 2006. Ralf said Montoya > Trulli on Beyond the Grid Podcast. So no. Alonso is overrated. He would have been destroyed by Kimi in the tyre war era (Michelins) or even Michael before 2004.
@GT012345tube I did. Ralf out-qualified Jarno in 2006 overall! In 2005 and 2006 they had similar bad luck, and Ralf was more consistent in the races. Ralf beat Jarno 2 years in a row, something Alonso failed to do.
@GT012345tube Yes reliability was important but Mclaren was clearly faster. Even though kimi had bad luck. I am sure if roles were reversed Kimi would probably win the title but I am sure by a lot less than 21 points. ALonso made just a single mistake in canada. Kimi made atleast 2 from what I remember Nurburgring and Monza
@GT012345tube Monza you know it wasn't puncture it was delamination by pushing so hard with a very heavier fuel load it will definitely hurt tyres and then he made a mistake by going wide else he would have overtaken Fisi atleast. And Nurburgring he was going off track and had a huge lock up and still was pushing hard after delamination. Some say driveshaft failure was his mistake in Imola as well by attacking kerbs so hard. And in 2003 he was great but Ferrari was at huge disadvantage due to Bridgestone tyres until Hungary. On an average of season Mclaren and Williams looked faster due to Michelin
@GT012345tube Nurburgring was definitely his mistake. Even Flavio said that they could easily match Mclaren speed if they used another engine but it was not that reliable so we sacrificed performance for reliability. Its ok to loose 2 or 4 points due to lower performance than to loose 10 points in achieving high performance
This is massively nostalgia goggles lmao. As far as racing goes 2005 was dogshit outside of Suzuka and Imola (which were awesome) and the season was practically over by the summer break, with Alonso having a 36-point gap and a more reliable car. But if you like listening to loud engines I guess it was great.
He did not. Raikkonen blew everyone away in qualifying but had to take a 10 place grid penalty because his engine failed in practice. Montoya didn't finish in front of Kimi once on merit in 2005 except for Brazil and Australia.
There was no fight in 2005 either lol. They fought on track maybe twice the entire year (once with different fuel loads too) and the season was practically over by the summer break.
I’m watching this in 2021 as a relatively new f1 fan (since 2018). I really expected to see Renault change Alonso’s tyres during the pit stops which I’m sure I’ve seen in most pit stops in the pre hybrid era . Am I losing my mind or is there a reason they didn’t give Alonso fresh Bridgestones?
With that said I know the pre hybrid era tyres were capable of lasting a lot longer than the perelli tyres , perhaps half the race . But surely if you’re going to have a 10 second pit stop it’s worth giving your driver fresh rubber no? Someone school me
look there's lewis hamilton rejoining the track after a pitstop...here comes max verstappen on the outside of turn1, there's no space there...and they crashed ops
GeorgeEDWARD0376 That's a good point, but I think refueling would bring back more unpredictability as teams would rely more on strategy which would mean different teams having a real shot of winning on race day!
Kanguesso Kang I don't see any evidence of that. The way to consistently have unpredictability is for the teams to have equal performance. We had refuelling when Ferrari & Schumacher dominated the 2002 and 2004 seasons.
@@ciaronsmith4995 still factually is the 2005, wdc, can't change that, people will never stop attacking you if you decide to understand you cant change the past, so stop complaining, and simply enjoy the classic races.
Hakkinen, Prime Kimi at McLaren and Alonso were the only true top talents during the Schumacher reign. Compare it to say, 1985 alone that had seven world champions on the grid. Jones, Rosberg, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Mansell, Piquet. Sure Montoya, Hill, Alesi were good drivers but not quite up there.
@@klockenberg2299 No it wasn't close at all. Watch the season and don't just rely on the stats. Points wise it was close but Mansell was about 1 sec slower in the races.... constantly. And yes, Rosberg had 4 or 5 DNF's from 1st place that year.
And do you seriously think Montoya would have won 1982 drivers' title with a non-turbo car that had 200 horsepower less than the top cars? It was the worst car that ever won the championship.
Uii big fail. Alonso destroys massa 2010 in ferrari and also kimi in 2014. Massa an kimi was 2007 a long time near togheter and 2008 massa fight with ham and not kimi. The 2005 mc laren was a monster ...with sad efficency. But in this car is it strong for 1 race will be everyone winner.
Except for the engine sound, todays F1 races are much much more exciting to watch than the "impossible to overtake" Ferrari era. I remember how extremely boring those races were.
Speak for yourself. Please. 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2007 were more exciting than any season this past decade, except maybe 2012. One off races like Spa 2004, Suzuka 2005 and others were also thrilling to watch.
When the F1 was exciting. Beautiful cars and nice sound, what we have now?? HALO and that engine sounds... a clear example about how to ruin a great sport.
In the past, there were good and bad things just like today. But yes, the v10 sound is missing :( And somehow missing action.. everything has become so predictable. Was a great time back then. Too bad that you can´t see these beautiful cars live on tv anymore!
what do deaf people say when they see a formula one car from 2005 "good looking car" a hearing person "i love the sound" personally im with the deaf though im not deaf but i say "good looking car" because you are all driving me crazy going on about the sound of the cars all the time surely there is more to formula one than a very loud engine. maybe people who say that want to seem like fans when they probably have nothing original too say and arent true fans like me.
When F1 reached at it's peak aesthetics. I don't care about engine sound anymore. Halo can stay as it saved Leclerc and Grosjean. But I'll rather choose Williams' walrus nose than dick nose anyday!
Sitting here in 2021, seeing that close racing through the lesmos and that roar and echo out of lesmo 2..... 1:05 man this was F1
Raikkonen would have dominated this race (he qualified on pole EASILY with a full tank of fuel), if not for the fact he was given a 10 place grid drop penalty for an engine failure in Free Practice Sorry. You should mention this in the video description.
