It's the losses and setbacks that teach us. It's all experience, and each one you have , good or bad, is what will build your resume over time. Trials like these are what give you established credibility 20 years down the road. When you can say " I've been doing this for 20 years " as people hear that and trust that and come to you for business, it's these days that will become a net benefit and not a loss. Stick with it (no pun intended lol)
DAP Weldwood contact cement is the best adhesive for headliners. U have to get a hvlp spray gun around 25 bucks, spray headliner & new material then let it set til the glue doesn't get stuck to the back of your hand then use one hand to hold up the material and your other hand to gently press moving your hand from middle to the edges as u follow the contours if the headliner. I believe the areas that didn't stick is due to the material over stretched first then having to push on those concave areas stressing the material.
I did one in suede and it went to shit as well...i blame the way its molded where its very deep the material will over stretch and end up unsticking.. and will like yours.
You could try injecting glue every inch, let it tack up, and then press it in place to see if that works. Won't be prefect but you can atleast enjoy it for awhile. Sorry bud. You did a good job. Did you use 3m adheisvie spray? I hear thats the best and I've used it in the past.
Personally I used duplicolour vinyl and fabric dye on my headliner and all the plastic pieces like a year and a half ago and it still looks good! Just keep your coats heavy. I think I used 3 cans for a single caber.
Damn, what a waste of time. I bet you used 3M Super 77? You need to use 3M Super Trim Adhesive which is like $60 a bottle. I don't care for the lights myself. What did you end up doing?
You can cut the fiber optics off from behind and use them again if they are still long enough. And trust me there is a way to get the left over glue and fabric off that headliner. It may take a lot of work but it is salvageable. One question I have, I am sure there is a reason but why did you pull the steering wheel off instead of just pulling it through the passenger side?
Couldn’t you just dye the headliner? I know they make a 32/64oz bottle of black die. The 64oz bottle will dye everything completely black including the Sunvisors etc. I mean the 64oz bottle cost $200 but really worth every penny.
