Beep! Beep! Beep! Don't make the Sequoia look bad. You didn't follow the directions for shifting into 4wd low. Full stop, neutral, shift into 4 low, and wait for it to engage. Same thing when leaving 4 low. If you do it out of order it beeps at you so as not to ruin the world best automobile. It's kind of like a baby crying because you put it's diaper on backwards
Yeah, I am at that crossroad. 2008 is still solid. But 2021 is probably the last year for a real bulletproof, NON-Turbo, Non EnviroCrapulated, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Tundra, or Lx570. May have to jump on either another Sequoia or LX570 this year.
@@saturnfire I bought the 2021 limited nightshade since only 2500 made and also last of the best v8s. I will never worry about this when I travel. I worry with any other car.
I have an ‘08 Limited and just hit 150k miles. Im a young guy, no kids or anything but bought the Sequoia to use as kind of a ‘work truck’ as I didn’t want a pickup. My girlfriend and I use it for camping, beach trips, and road trips. And its also perfect for me to haul wood and whatever projects I want to do. Not to mention its a tank in the snow and has been dead reliable all while being plenty luxurious for my needs. Highly recommend.
A year later and the truck is now at 200k miles (I drive a lot for work) and has literally not had a single issue. Just oil changes. Coming up on summer time and the A/C blows ice cold. Many road trips, beach trips, hauled a lot of stuff and it takes it like a champ. I can run the truck through the car wash real quick and its a clean, presentable truck ready to go on a date or out with friends. Highly recommend if you’re thinking about it
I'm the original owner of a 2008 Limited 2WD with over 200K. This thing has been absolutely bullet proof. The interior leather still looks almost new. I take this thing offroad on dirt roads for hunting & fishing. Because of the room we usually take this for long roadtrips (wife's BMW stays home). No creaks or sqeaks, just rock solid. The ONLY reason I'm considering replacing her is that the paint is garbage and the wife says I'm crazy to spend $5k on a nice paint job. Probably going to keep it and get something economical for day to day. Love this thing.
I have a 2002 version with 315k miles. I've replaced some age-related stuff on it, but overall very pleased with reliability and comfort. Very confident in snow/rough/unpaved roads in my area.
I have the 2008. Runs perfectly and heading towards 250,000 miles. Very quiet ride and minimal problems over the years. Most reliable vehicle I've had.
@@mercedesbenzs600bash My 2008 Sequoia has 260K+ miles and it's still going strong. No major issue, ever. I've driven it from Cincinnati to Denver, and back, twice in the last year, and no issues. On the highway it averages over 18 MPG if I drive the speed limit and don't have too much headwind. I also find the huge barcalounger front seats to be very comfortable for all-day driving. I like it so much that I'm looking for another lower mileage Gen 2 Sequoia to get me through the next 10 years, or so...
@reallybigair Yeah there great vehicles,I picked up a 2008 Limited 5.7L 2 years ago with 250,000+ miles, the drivers side view mirror just stopped working, the radio works but it doesn't flip open for CDs and I have a slight rear main seal leak, but overall their really great trucks...
For my money, the Sequoia bloated, outdated, and gas guzzler that it is, is THE best SUV on the road. Rented one for a long weekend in Atlanta in 2019. Yes, the Tahoe, Ford Explorer, and Jeep Grand Cherokee "look" better, but that's where it begins and ends. In driving on the highway and in the city, with the air conditioner on, I did not measure the gas mileage, however, I did not think it was horrible (given that it's 8 passenger vehicle with a 5.7 liter V-8). It was an absolute pleasure to drive. Had no problems navigating downtown Atlanta. Maintain a Sequoia and you should get (at least) 300,000 trouble-free miles. I like to keep my vehicles for 10+ years. I'm at an age where if I picked up a gently used 2019 or 2020 in a few years, it should last me the rest of my life.
We just bought a 2019 platinum 2wd. We traded in an ‘18 sienna for the ‘19 sequoia. Let me just say I love the power train. The classic 5.7L V8 is an absolute beast. What isn’t is the gas mileage. If I drive conservatively I can get 19 mpg highway, which I find impressive with this large engine and vehicle weight. I towed my small cargo trailer the other day and didn’t even notice it back there. I really don’t mind the “outdated” look honestly. I really am a fan of reliability, which is the ultimate factor in our decision.
We a a 2008, 86k miles...still a tank. Original owner. No rust...in Texas. But eats tires and gas like crazy...all good I work for an oil company. Reliability and safety is our priorities.
That is American Hateration at it is best... I have owned Dodge, Lincoln Nav, and Suburban... Had all kinds of problems with them... I have a Tundra now and Sequoia both 2013... They are the truth so far... Not one problem from my Toyota's... For reliably nothing American comes close...
::laughs in land cruiser:: But seriously - Toyota isn’t on the bleeding edge of updating its models, tech etc and I don’t care. They make products that last and keep their value - which I care more about. Personally I want a stripped down 200 series from overseas. I don’t care for any of the integrated tech so many car manufacturers are going for. It’s outdated after they put it in. I’d rather just upgrade it myself from crutchfield every now and again.
🙄 If you question Toyota Reliability at this point you are in denial, Toyota builds the most dependable rugged vehicles in the world hands down !!!! My 1993 Toyota Landcruiser had 700,000 km on the odometer when I sold it 10 years ago. The current owner tells me it is still running strong !! And to make the case even stronger it has spent the last 20 years in the Arctic above the tree line !! Never had to plug it in even when the temperature was minus 40 degrees celcius!! She always started with one crank of the motor ! My experience with other toyota vehicles has been very similar though I'd have to say the series 80 Landcruiser is the toughest of them all !
I agree, bloated is a good word to describe the looks lol. I also prefer the boxy 'murican styling of the Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon and Expedition. But these are quality vehicles (also hot damn, that 6.6 second 0-60 time is impressive). Great review brotha
Thanks Mike! Yeah man, the 1st gen sequoia looked pretty good, and it still does, but the 2nd gen is pudgy. 6.6 seconds is solid, especially for a 3 ton rig.
Yeah, it's pudgy. I'll admit it. But when you're sitting in the second row of that thing for a road trip, you're glad for the extra space afforded by the wider, taller body of the gen 2. I have one of each, and while I do prefer to drive the Gen one, you can't beat the awesome space available in the second row of the Gen 2.
Yikes that owner should check the door seal for the payload capacity of the sequoia. I bet that trailer has 700-800 lbs of tongue weight. Put a full tank of gas and some people in the sequoia and you will be over weight in a hurry. That being said. We also have a 2008 Limited. We pull a smaller 5500 lb camper about 6k loaded. It’s ok towing plenty of power. But that independent rear suspension makes it a little more wiggly with a trailer behind it.
I've owned a Chevy Blazer, Ford Expedition and now I'm on my 3rd Toyota Sequoia. First sequoia was an 04, I had 225k on her and she was still running strong. It was vandalized and totaled but my friend bought it from me for 4k. I then bought a 2014 sequoia platinum and was blown away by the luxury. Blizzard pearl white with red rock leather interior. It was beautiful! Well some kid ran a red and totaled that out but that beast of an SUV kept me safe. So I bought another one! A 2015 Pyrite mica and with the red rock interior. In my opinion, good looks, comfort and reliability of any vehicle on the road today.
I love the Red Rock interior. However, I prefer the 8 passenger seating option with the bench second row seat. I haven't seen a single 8 passenger model with Red Rock interior. Wonder if it was even an option?
@Snake Plissken she's a real estate agents and sells within 3 different states. She's out and about nearly every day. Also, we go to Florida around 2 or 3 times a year. So it's possible buddy.
@Snake Plissken I'm saying that it's possible to have that kind of mileage when you show houses between 3 different states daily. I don't get why that's so hard to comprehend.
I will always take the so called "outdated Sequoia" over it's competitors! ....it's never outdated when your Sequoia is going strong while your Ford, GMC, Chevy have been recalled endless times or transmission problems!!!✌🏼🏜️🍻
Agree. LOVE my 08 Sequoia and it’s still going strong. I have no intention of trading it in anytime soon. It’s a beast, performs well, has lots of room for whatever I want to use it for, and very safe.
Feb 28, 2022: Your review encourage my decision to buy a used 2008 Toyota Sequoia SR5. I bought the 2-day cooling off contract so I could take it to my mechanic to examine and test drive. I'm anxious right now, waiting for the final result of mechanic's exam and test drive. Will update when I learn the results.
Here’s a proper review Zero ball joints in 250000 miles, zero starter or alternator replacement. Zero broken interior panels, switches or anything else. The doors still close great, the paint is ok, the ac has worked over 20 years So Toyota Sequoia 2000s all the way. Only water pump and timing belt, otherwise you’re good for 500,000 miles not kilometers. On the original starter to boot.
We just traded our 2011 sequoia limited in, has 225k miles, and still solid as ever. Only problem we had was the fuel pump went out at 200k, and had to have valve cover gaskets replaced at 210k, nothing else ever. It was using more oil between changes even though no smoking or leaking, but I would still trust it to drive coast to coast. My wife just wanted to downsize a bit...
I have a 2011 Tundra. I needed a bigger vehicle for my growing family and I found an 08 Escalade ESV with 48k mi. It was in amazing shape and it looked killer, black on black with black wheels. Just a sharp ride. I owned it for a year before selling it and putting 14k mi on it. Having lived with it I can confidently say it was a POS compared to my Tundra. These vehicles are the same vintage, my Tundra was just designed and built better in every way than the $90k msrp Caddy. Door handles snapping, interior pieces warping and cracking. Just a highly polished turd. The drivetrain was awesome though, the 415hp 6.2 (non AFM) with AWD. Amazing, but man that whole truck was just overpriced junk. Hence I'm here, I need another vehicle to replace the same size of the Escalade. Minivans and 3 row mid size SUVs don't cut it with a 13yo boy, a 2yo, and a baby on the way. I should have bought this one to begin with. Shame on GM for peddling such a crappy vehicle for a stupid price. I'm amazed people snatch them up. Don't even get me started on the 2015+ GMT. Just look at how many NICE 250k+ mile Sequoias are on the used market. Even 300k+ mi pulling over $10k.
Out of curiousity why don't you like small cars anymore? I have a mid size SUV but was kind of thinking of going smaller as easiter to wash, park on street etc. Let me know your view point because I myself am still pondering.
I’ve owned 2 different 4th gen 4runners, a Lexus LS400, Honda Accord, Mustang, and VW GTI. Just because I like the style of American cars more doesn’t mean I think they’re superior in reliability. I was simply stating common issues that a lot of Sequoia owners experience.
Excellent. How do you not have a larger regular audience. I think you'd be a more entertaining car reviewer than most of the people on RU-vid. Good luck in the future
We have 08 Sequoia with 140k miles and 12 Tundra 4x4 with 99k miles . Both have been great with no issues whatsoever . We replaced the brakes and rotors once on each vehicle and regular oil change. You might spend more on gas but you have reliable, durable and trouble free car.
Love my 2008, but just experienced the dreaded valve spring failure at 140k miles. Now I have to rebuild the top end. Not a cheap repair. This is a known weak point of the 3UR-FE engine that this video didn’t mention and can be pretty catastrophic.
I own a 2010 Sequoia limited. Bought it new and still going strong. Zero issues. Yes frame rust. Yes paint fading. But it’s a reliable beast and does the job headache free. Just crossed 100K miles last week. Not selling it. Good video.
2008 with 242,000, super reliable, clean and rattle free. New tie rods at last tire change and alignment, radio AUX switch needs to be replaced, that’s about it. Just took it to Colorado on a 2,000 mile drive from Indiana- love it to death!
Ha! Our aux input went out too on our 08 platinum. We put a new JVC 10.2" android auto/apple car play infotainment head unit in it. This is a must to make the dated radio/nav feel like we are in a new vehicle. Love the sequoia. +200,000mi. 💪🏻
sorry bro. you are not FIT to be doing a review on this vehicle. you don't know enough about it to be doing a youtube video on it. Unless it was meant as comedy. In that case you did a fair job :)
Our 2008 Limited is rock solid with 175k on the clock....3 kids...plenty of room. Now if someone can help us fix the radio & camera blackout.I hear its common. Thanks for the video!
Wow! Definitely a chevy dude reviewing a toyota! Just go back your chevy repair shop waiting room that is where you will be with your square chevy suv junk sha-boom!
Hahaha I laught at this joke aof reviewer you can that the toyota sequoia is outdated I tell you what this sequoia can make to a million miles th chevy break down to much lifter oil burn the gm offer no thanks I take a. Toyota all day this guy is so negative I dont like him he put down the sequoia
In June 2022, I drove solo in a 2008 SRF on the Dempster Hwy, from Galveston, TX, to the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk, NT, for the Summer Solstice. The Sequoia performed like a trooper. Only two problems - malfunctioning of the tailgate latch and the 4WD/ABS sensor.
Good video. Glad you went over the known problems. I picked up a 2014 SR5 in March of 2019 with 113,000 miles. Living in Michigan, I flew out to California to buy it. After a year of research, I found that I would pay about the same for a vehicle with or without rust. And driving it home 2,000 miles only cost me about $300 in gas. I did have a problem with the 4L on my way home. On my way out of the hotel parking lot, without even selecting it, 4L started flashing on the dash. And this happened a couple of times when the early mornings were below freezing. It hasn't happened since. And I regularly drive it in 4L for about 10 miles just to keep things lubricated. The next issue, that you mentioned, is the loud ticking noise from the engine. It doesn't necessarily do it on the first start up on cold days. I'll have driven it 3 miles to the store, shut down, start back up 20 minutes later, and it starts clacking. I thought it was the big rig near me the first time! You know how diesels clack. One last problem is that the middle row, passenger side seat will not tip partially and slide forward. It'll only fold completely and slide. Not a big deal. Some day I'll get into it and fix it. I do use it for towing a large utility trailer, and have towed a small camping trailer, and hardly know anything is back there! And I love being able to say,"Yes! We can all fit.", when there are 7 others to take somewhere. I have 126,000 miles on it now.
Thank you for sharing your Sequoia experience! I’m hoping that the ticking won’t cause any residual damages, like cylinder scoring. It sounds like the Sequoia is a perfect fit for your lifestyle!
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy Me too! On the ticking. So far, in the 13,000 miles I've had it, it's only done it about half-a-dozen times. I heard that it may be the oil. Read that if I use Toyota's oil. I use a name brand oil. I just don't understand it completely yet. Beyond that, the one other thing I don't like is that I can't fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back! Got a 4x8 sheet of 2-inch foam the other week. Had to push the front seats nearly all the way up, and put the sheet in at an angle, resting it on top of the front seat backs. Only then could I close the hatch. I could probably have rolled down the rear window and had it resting on the bottom of the window frame. But it was cold out! Next time I'll try that.
My 2008 Limited Sequoia has over 211,000 miles on it and it still practically drives like it's brand new! Also I tow a 35 foot RV Travel Trailer that weights every bit of 9000 lbs. and this truck has zero issues pulling it, unlike the Ford Expedition's I've always owned.
Take a bath hippy, had a 2015 4Runner from till 2020, them moved up to Sequoia(2017 used 32K), God dam the power booted from that 5.7 amazing. 3 kids and need the extra room, they grow so fast. Looking forward to a gen 3 Sequoia, but keep that powerful engine, thanks for review.
😂 for sure! I’m on my second 4th gen 4Runner right now. The first had the v6 and now we have the 2uz-fe v8. The low end torque is fantastic, and it’s the quickest 4runner ever made. Glad you like the Sequoia 👍🏼
They can have my 2013 Toyota Sequoia Limited 5.7 V8 when they can pry it from my cold dead fingers! That’s probably going to be necessary as it will more than likely out live me. And yes, you’re not...that funny, but your hair is! By the way, that V8 is also a ULEV. My 4RUNNER 4.7 V8 with 380,000 still passes emissions tests with flying colours. Try that with your Cadillac Escalade! Hahahaha....Hahahah...you get the point.
UPDATE about purchasing a 2008 Toyota Sequoia SR5, with a bit over 142,000 miles on it. I bought it. I did a lot of research online for the same year model and found many at higher prices with higher mileage. The car I bought had the optional rear camera. The primary concern for me, at a height of 4 ft 9 inches and sort of short legs, was whether I'd be able to sit in it comfortably and be able to see over the steering wheel and hood as well as being able to comfortably reach the pedals. Good thing I fit in it.....being a Japanese company, I think they made ample adjustments so short Asians like me would be able to drive this big SUV. As you mention in your video, the visibility all around is excellent. As I mentioned previously, we paid an extra $250 to the dealership for a 2-day "cooling off" period. Under California law, car sellers can offer that non-refundable option to their customers. Lexus of Marin offered us this 2-day "cooling period" contract. I decided the $250 "cooling off" fee was worth the money. Fortunately, our personal mechanic who spent the better part of his day inspecting this vehicle and test driving it on the highway and in city traffic, told us it was a good buy. Additionally, without my asking, and at no additonal charge to the original advertized price, the dealership replaced the old radio console with a brand new touch screen Pioneer DMH WT7600NEX RDS AV Receiver Auto Radio Multimedia RDS AV Recptor RDS. Plus they replaced the old spare tire with a brand new regular size tire. I like that the spare is easily accessible under the rear of this car. I don't mind the low gas per milage usage. I don't drive great distances and I don't drive every day. I really like the height I enjoy sitting above most of the rest of traffic and the perceived safety of the amount of metal around me. The ride is very comfortable. I won't need all of the seating. Most of the cargo space will be filled with the dog crates of my large Mastiff and a slightly smaller Pit Bull-Boxer mix. Thanks again for you very thorough , enjoyable and humorous video. You should make more. with the prices of cars today and the future, more people are looking to purchase used cars. Your video helped me tremendously.
I own a small daycare. Use it to fit all the kids. For gas, especially now- it’s scary lol 😂 but it fits SO well when road tripping and moving furniture etc. I love her. Safe, reliable as hell, comfortable, spacious.
Got a newer model ;) - 2015 Limited 4WD close to 200k and think it's an excellent vehicle. Use it camping, highway, in city driving. Handles great, parks great. Such an easy to drive reliable vehicle. I would recommend buying older models to friends.
I have about 150K on my 2008 which I had bought brand new. Just did the valve cover/spark plug seals myself. Took all day but hopefully it’ll last another 13 years. Also swapped the shocks to Bilstein 5100 which raised the front about an inch so I had to install a 1” leveling kit in the rear. Definitely going to drive it into the ground. I’m 6’ tall and we’ve slept in the back a few times. Really comfy with a sleeping pad. Plenty of room. And definitely do the diff fluid. Mine, I neglected until about 120K and the magnetic plug had all kinds of shavings on it.
If you own one of these 5.7L Toyota. Be prepared to change out the main rear seal, valve cover gaskets and water pump they all start to leak at about 150k miles. Speaking from a one owner of a 2008 4X4 SR5.
4:07 Trypophobia! This is brilliant! I watched this video a few weeks ago and thought it was hilarious, but it randomly pops into my head and I find myself laughing about it. Keep it coming!
I luv Sequoias! But then I like big cars lol I luv how spacious it is and still a traditional SUV, none of the crossover nonsense that’s so popular right now
Beautiful vehicle, love that rumble.. what a beast! The radical "progressive" sky screamers really hate these SUV's and demand for everyone to be in electric cracker jack boxes on wheels. I recently found one.. a one owner, meticulously maintained, 2018 fully loaded Platinum trim with 56k miles for $43k.. just mint. We are passing on it as it much too large for one or two people and it is QUITE thirsty. I can't deal with the uncertainty of fuel prices as we don't know what the future holds if the radical left continues to retain their death grip on this country.. gas prices will be through the roof in no time again! They appear to be a little bit lowered right now for the election season.
Oh man…it still sounds like a beast…ok bro u might like the looks of the competitions but they don’t even comes close to the reliability of the SEQUOIA I still prefer this over them because as they aged they start to fall apart but the SEQUOIA still stands out 😁🤷🏾♂️
My 2010 Platinum 4wd does well at 287k. Previous owner left me with some maintenance neglect, but i brought it back and its a beast. Trading for a newer one soon, as this one is not a 10k tower. So might as well.
That was really entertaining, well done. Do you want me to send Savage your resume or have you done that already? …and That is an insane amount of corrosion on the cross member and control arms for what looks like an otherwise solid vehicle
