2012 Fiat 500 Abarth Test Drive & Sub-Compact Car Video Review

The suspension is stiffer and the exterior is more aggressive. The Fiat 500 Abarth is a sub-compact car that is a total blast to drive. The MSRP on a 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth is $22,000.
Back in the 1950's Carlo Abarth used Fiat vehicles as race cars. These little automobiles were very successful racers and Carlo Abarth ventured out making high performance parts for Fiat vehicles. Fiat then bought out Abarth in 1971 and designated that name for their racing department. Fast forward to 2012 and we have a potent little rocket in the Fiat 500 Abarth.
Differentiating the Abarth from a more mundane Fiat 500 is easy. The Abarth model will carry with it the signature scorpion badges that Abarth is known for. Other styling ques include an Abarth sport stripe, performance front bumper, twin exhaust, 2-piece rear fascia, rear spoiler, and 17-inch rims. On the inside the 2012 Fiat Abarth treats the driver to high performance sport seats, a flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum pedals, boost gauge, Bose sound system, and more.
It's the performance aspect that sets the 2012 Fiat Abarth apart from the rest of the pack. Then engine is a turbocharged 16-valve 1.4 liter 4-cylinder that makes 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft. of torque. The power control module makes sure the Abarth is operating at peak performance while in Sport mode. The car still manages to get 28 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway too! The wheels are wrapped in sticky Pirelli P Zero tires for additional stick. Suspension wise the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth features stiffer springs and KONI shocks for added handling performance. The steering is quicker and more responsive thanks to a tuned system calibrated around the electric power steering unit. The brakes are larger rotors to take care of any spirited driving needs.
The 2012 Fiat Abarth is full of personality and it drives around like an angry little car looking for a fight. This is great for the driver that wants a fun and sporty sub-compact car. The turbocharged engine provides plenty of motivation while the suspension is capable of handling the twisties. Abarth is not a brand it's a racing setup "shop" like AMG or Brabus. In Europe every car company has developed a particular tradition with a racing setup shop for it's competition models (mainly rally) in it's history and so it's more sporty models are prepared with them and share the name. Mercedes -> AMG BMW -> Msport or simply M FIAT -> Abarth Alfa Romeo -> Autodelta or simply Delta Lancia -> HF and so on... :-)

im 6'3 with the abarth non sunroof and it is extremely comfortable. its a lot of fun. also...5 speed. not 6

I'm 6'1" and drive my wife's Abarth; no issues whatsoever, but we don't have the sunroof. It's not as spacious as the Ford F-150 we traded or our GMC Acadia, but those aren't getting 34mpg either.

The Abarth brand never fell into obsoleteness. It was just around europe and not in the US. And its a 5 speed, the reverse we don't count. That being said, I loved the review anyways :)

While the car is shorter in length than a Mini, the rear seat and trunk space seems much more usable in the Fiat based on what I saw and measured. That height is the key to interior packaging even if it does make the car feel less sporty. I have two small kids, one is out of a child seat and the other is in a front-facing seat and I'd think the back seat on the Fiat is quite usable for me when the Minivan is in use for something else. Yeah, I'm trying to rationalize buying one of these.

I'm glad they're putting this 1.4L engine in the dodge dart, so you can get that awesome performance and exhaust note in a more reasonably sized car.

There is only so much you can do to drive around the lag. It is not bad, but it is always there.

You say it's pronounced Abart then say Abarth a minute later, and talk about it having a 6 speed manual while showing the shifter which clearly shows 5 speeds. Then you don't account for the fact the Minis offer more features like smartphone integration, built in gps, better suspension, more power, fewer plastic interior bits and I don't know if you tried using a sport button on a Cooper s, but it sounds quite good.

I think you're being a little overly aggressive, and also incorrect. The American market has 3 engines. The 1.4 multiair which has 101 hp which goes in the standard 500 pop, the 1.4 multiair turbo which has 135 hp and goes in the 500 turbo, and the 1.4 multiair Abarth tuned turbo engine which has 160 hp and goes in the Abarth. Also, Carlo Abarth was not Italian. He was from Austria. The "H" in his name would be silent.

Solid review. At 6'1" my non-sunroof Abarth 500 fits me just about perfectly. I have a 500 Madness ECU swap so the 196 hp makes this little screamer awesome for a city or commute car. It just so damned fun. Flawed but in ways that make it desirable. I smile all day in the styptic little car, you should too.

I am guessing you must be in Australia. And cheking your sites the drive away price for the 118i is 47.336 and the abarth drive away price is 39.202 and that is for the Esse Esse. that is almost 8000 dollar difference.

Have you been in a Fiat 500? I don't think you can fault the MINI interior after comparing it to the competititon. The 2011 and newer MINIs also have more soft touch interior bits, and vastly improved radio controls. Finally, what do you mean it doesn't have that sound "naturally"? I don't see where you get the crappy car with big exhaust thought from, a Cooper S sounds refined yet angry and powerful when pushed. Nothing like the typical ricer. Too rough? What does that even mean?

I mentioned that I live in another country, every country has its type of "coin", I live in Mexico, here we use the "peso" and not the dollar, I don´t know why cars are more expensive here(just some brands) , maybe are taxes or importation issues, I dont know. If you want more info let me know

In my country prices are different, for example the new abarth 2013 costs $375,400 and a BMW 118i costs $360,500,if you want the automatic its in $380,500, so, for 5k I would pick a BMW(automatic), which one would you pick?

Why do you people always argue about the 2 cars? Mini or Fiat they are just cars. Buy what you like and stop convincing yourself that the car you bought or like is better. The arguments on here always take such childish turn. Once again. It is just a car!

That is a stupid incorrect thing for the tester to say. Normal people will fit in the back ok. Not drive to Alaska seats, but the car will carry 4 people when you need it to. I fit fine, the salesman was well over 6 feet and he sat back there with me and my wife sat in the front.

375 thousand dollars? where do you live?? I don't like common cars and BMWs are common.But the fiat abarth every where you park people gather around it and ask questions. Even while i am driving. But good thing we have choices out there. There is always something for any taste.

By that logic, Hitler has more class than a Abarth 500, because there was only 1 Hitler. Ever think that maybe MINIs are popular at least partially because of their style? The Fiat 500 is a shrunk Fiat Panda, the MINI Cooper was made from the ground up to be a MINI Cooper by BMW, a company that isn't known by the acronym "Fix It Again, Tony". Just saying..

for 27k ill buy a GTI with better features, better ride quality, and more power. tuning a GTI is easy too. been inside a mini cooper, a clubman, an abarth, and a gti and by far the GTI was the best with mini being second. the fiat looks cool...but thats it. for the 22k price, id rather get a ford fiesta st
