Fully agree with all kpatterson says. The Golf R is a practical and versatile daily car especially in the 5-door variant, it's a sleeper that doesn't scream "Wanna race?!" and yet it produces the goodies when poked to do so. Update the ECU software by a safe 20% in a Golf R and you're well into 300 hp territory which puts the performance damn near supercar territory. Nuf said.

People need to stop looking at just the spec sheet when comparing this car to the Evo and STi. So many people don't understand/appreciate the upscale feel of the Golf R in terms of material quality and overall driving comfort that the Evo and STi could never dream of reaching. The Golf R is not built for pure speed. It competes well in this segment, even at this price point, because of the things that it does well that the Evo and STi do not.

Agree. Like you said this model is German Exclusive. A Golf GTI or VW enthusiast will pay that extra money and have a smile on his or her face everytime their behind the wheel.

I have this vehicle in 4 door with Nav/moon roof trim. I have also had an STI, Si and a Lexus IS 250. The Golf R is my favorite car that I have ever owned. It is not as hard edged in performance as the STI, or as much frenzied fun at the ragged edge of 8000 rpm as the Si, but it is by far the most equaly balanced in all of it's duties as a daily driver, performance fun machine, out and out utility and overall luxury and sophistication. Only the Nav system lets this car down.

The traction control in my 08 R32 doesn't fully shut off either, but I couldn't tell when I was going sideways in the snow in an empty parking lot.

The stability control will only step in if you're trying to throw the car around. If you take a turn like a normal human being, and not like MotorTrend's tester who needs the car to be all the way sideways in order to consider it to be "performance oriented," the stability control will not interfere. I'm sure the handling is pretty good, especially after watching this test video. Good review, Steve!

Gotta love it how some people mention you can get a bigger car for the same or less money. Everything I need fits in the MkVI, with space left. A bigger car is therefore a downgrade for me, as I don't need to carry dead weight.

Just looked at a GTI and an R today. Same color cars parked side by side they looked identical. You have to look really close to see a difference. Cant see paying 36k for an R. It looks just like a GTI and the GTI was 10k less. BTW, test drove the GTI and really liked it.

Most people think of Cadillac as the DTS, which is primarily for limousines and/or grandpas, so of course you'd call them oversized. They're not cheap - to make, or to buy - nor are they ugly-unless you're the kind of person that looks at a Honda Civic and thinks it'd look cool with a wing on the back. And yes Americans know how to make cars very well, actually. They just use cheap-ish plastic interiors too often and now everyone thinks they're crappy. I've had several American cars, no issues.

In reality, the car has 270 hp. VW just underrated it to not step on Audi's toes. But anyway, name another car that has 250+ hp, AWD, room for 4 adults, practical, has similar features and is as refined as the Golf R in this price range. I bet you can't!

Nice review once again Steve. I'm not sure if you are aware but you can't shut off the stability and or traction control on this car. Most enthusiasts would therefore give this cart a pass.

I answered this from another viewer above. Yes, those systems go hand-in-hand and they are not FULLY defeatable but I can't imagine that being a deal breaker for a car that performs as well as this! Now the price? That's another story...

I struggle with a car like this the same way I struggle with an impreza wrx sti or a Camaro zl1... I'm sure it's very nice but it started as small family commuter, so did the impreza and the Camaro starts life as a mid 20k rental car.

I must admit that the price of this vw in US is silly, but this car is in the same class as wrx, focus rs and so on. It's less powerful but more refined and it's easier to live with.

Steve would you prefer the R to the GTI? It would great to see a GTI review sometime soon too. As for you view on the design, if you look at the fully loaded R's from Europe with the blacked headlights, wheels and LED tails in Rising Blue I'm sure you would change your mind :)

It is overpriced, but it is meant for enthusiasts. They will only bring 5,000 to the US market. I have a 2008 R32 that I bought last year. It was originally around the same price, but I got it for around 10k. Basically a complete steal because I am in love with it. I wish they brought the DSG to the new R in the US, manuals are fun, but can be tiering when commuting. Even though this car has higher horsepower, it is slower from 0-60 because of the lack of DSG.

I love the 2 door r more then then the 4door but i really wish vw wouldve made the r with atleast 305hp. Maybe the people would've not mind the 35k price. Still love the vw family tho as im a vw driver

We bought our daughter a new Beetle on Saturday, so I had a few hours of standing around the dealership staring at one of these on the showroom floor. It looked cool, and I liked my 06 GTI... however I kept staring at the $37,000+ sticker on it and just couldn't add it up. o.O

i understand the point of this car. not everybody gets it, but for those who have caught the gti bug, there's no getting past it. in my mind, the gti is up there with bmws and audis, if not better. i would rather a gti than a 3 series or an a4, so if i had the money i would definitely buy the golf r over a more prestigious sedan, simply because its appeal is much greater in the eyes of a gti driver who now has a better paycheck.

Well, the system can't be FULLY disengaged just like on all VWs sold here as far as I know. But your emphasis on that fact...calling it a downfall...is blown WAY out of proportion. And perhaps that little bit of ESC will save your behind some day.

First off, the CTS now comes standard with a Direct-Injection 3.6L engine, 318HP. Second, you're paying for a car that comes with lots of luxury features and good looks. The Golf is and always will be a Golf. And why the HELL would someone pay over $36k for a VW when they can get a Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 for $29k, with 348 HP! Not to mention the CTS AND Genesis Coupes get the same MPG as the Golf R.....

But what do you mean? Yes it's based on a model of car from the 1970s. Do you have something against hatchbacks? A MK1 and MK6 Volkswagen Golf looking almost nothing alike. Would you consider a 2014 Ford Mustang to have 1960's "design language"?

I can understand your qualm with the price, as I would not shell out $36,000 for this car. But you have to take into consideration the quality of the other cars with more power. The comfort/performance mix is not something that's easy to come by. The EVO and STI both go for ~$35-40k brand new. The interior tech and comfort is laughable. Of course, the motor on both those cars would be more desirable, but if you want a mix of comfort and performance, the Golf R wins between those three cars.

It's a bit embarrassing driving a car with fake engine sound generated by a speaker behind the dashboard VW calls a "Soundaktor". The more you press on the gas pedal the more the speaker goes vroom vroom. If you disconnect the soundaktor the car is as quiet as a regular Golf which actually makes it more pleasant to drive on long trips.

Neither of those cars are all wheel drive. Neither of the cars have anywhere near the build quality and material quality of the R (It's made in Germany). The Golf R is an Audi TTS in a less sexy but more practical package for $20,000 less. The R is also not a car that screams "Hey I'm going through a mid-life crisis, so I need a crazy looking car so people will pay attention to me" like a Genesis does. You comparing the Optima SX to this car is epically hilarious

Sorry guys and gals, 36K for a 2.0 liter turbo?! What are you guys drinking? VW is the best con man in the business. Steve is absolutely right. They keep repackaging the same design over and over. Let's not forget the super expensive VW maintenance down the road. Search Steve's reviews for Genesis Coupe for 2013 and you get a much nicer car, better fuel economy and a bit less Germanic precision, but you will save 10K! Need more space, then get Kia Optima with the turbo... 274HP.
