You can replace just the bearing of the drive shaft - Yes, Honda says to replace the whole thing for some reason, but there are expert shops who replace just the bearing. I had this done for my moms crv at a place called Cardanic in Toronto. Only cost $300. If a shop convinces you you need a new one, call another. Called a handful of places before finding Cardanic. Don’t stress, light issue. It was a 2014 CRV.

I could not find anyone locally to replace the u-joints. They’re swaged in place and require a different approach to replacement. I’m glad you have a local resource for this. That’s excellent.

Will driving without the rear shaft damage the car ? I did this to my 98 Honda crv with real time 4x4 and it seems fine but im afraid it night wear out the front if the back is gone.

I only drove it without the rear shaft for a short time to diagnose it. If you drive for an extended period without you will definitely wear out the front tires faster. I’m not sure if you’ll notice any extra wear on the front driveshafts or not.

Great videos. Did you ever get the crv to stop shaking? If so what was the solution?
@JoesCarSmartsNY

For me it was the front left CV shaft.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY I have the exact same issue coming from what seems to be under the driver side. I replaced damn near the whole suspension by now. Lower control arms ball joints outer tie rods. Engine mounts, trans mounts, differential mount and dampener. Sway links and bar bushing. Aligned multiple times. Tires balanced/rotated. I took the drive shaft off and still have severe side to side wobble under acceleration from about 55-70 mph. I did replace the passenger axle when doing the ball joints and control arms And noticed the shaking. It felt like it was the driver side so I just replaced that one. Still shaking. I’m thinking maybe the passenger axle was defective from the manufacturer. I’ve done everything you have so far and I might recall you saying in that article that you had to change the axles twice if I’m not mistaken. Thank you for your time and videos.

@@JD-xi1yv So, you’ve replaced both front shafts and it still shakes exactly the same? That’s surprising to me. It would be a good move to warranty out both front shafts and try to swap them again. After that, I’m not sure.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY yes I did all of that suspension work at the same time and replaced only the passenger front axle when I noticed some grease around the boot. When I felt the wobble I assumed that new bushings in all of the suspension parts were causing me to actually feel the shaking since the suspension was more solidified. The driver axle was the only thing I didn’t replace that day. So maybe three days ago I replaced the driver side axle and took off the drive shaft to narrow down the possibilities and still shaking severely. I thought, like you, at first maybe it was a torque converter but I don’t think the crv would shake this bad if it was. My only thought is maybe the passenger side axle wasn’t balanced or somehow defective from the manufacturer. I’m going to replace the axles again staring with the passenger side first. I will definitely keep you posted on what, if anything, fixes the problem. Maybe it’ll help someone else out there who’s having the same issue.

Fixed! - So I decided to take off that passenger front axle that I replaced a few months ago from Autozone and noticed a gsp stamp on it. I don’t know how that ended up in a duralast box but they sold me a part that they don’t even carry. I swapped it out with an actual duralast that was new and my problem is solved. I think maybe some one was dishonest about a return and I ended up buying the fake. I’m so happy this problem is solved. Thank you again for your videos and your time.

Do you know if these require any more juice to run vs the halogens? Any chance it will decrease the life of my battery, etc.?

I don’t think it matters. This is a video about the driveshaft. Haha.

@@LostInBoston617 I figured maybe that was it. The LEDs use much less power than halogens.

Hi. Did you ever found the source of the vibration?. I'm going crazy with mine that has a vibration around 75mph. I have spent so much money in oem parts from Honda that it's not even funny anymore. I have replaced both CV Axles $700 each. Both shock absorbers $400 the pair. Sway bar links and bushing all around +/- $400. New tires Good Year Assurance Comfort dryve $712. Plus all the wheel balancing and the alignment every time that I installed a new part chasing this vibration. I haven't messed with the driveshaft but I just saw your video and give me ideas... Did removing your driveshaft eliminate the vibration? I'm really going crazy here because I have changed every part that I believe could generate a vibration with OEM parts and it is still there. Please help. Thanks and great videos by the way.

You need to remove the rear driveshaft and see if the vibration is gone.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY I honestly didn't considered before because I was worried about damaging the rear diferential or something as I know that it gets activated when there is a difference on speed between the front and rear wheels. Did you notice any change when you remove yours?
@JoesCarSmartsNY

You only need to drive it briefly to see if the vibration is gone. The dealer removed mine when I asked them for help and they also drove it around with no rear driveshaft. It’s fine to remove it. To look for the vibration in an all wheel drive vehicle you can jack up all four wheels with jack stands on a flat paved surface and run the vehicle in drive up to the point of vibration and have someone squat down on either side to look under, never in front or behind the vehicle and keep all windows down so you can hear the other person. Sometimes doing this may set off an abs or traction control light but it goes out as soon as you drive the car on the road again.

Extremely dangerous, do not do this! If that car falls off the stands you are going 70mph with no way to stop on time!
