and thanks for this vid this is very helpful. took awhile to fig out how to get off the hose clamp on the hose clamped to the filter (from top), same as the one you did here (not the one directly on the filter of course).

d toad I either used a flexible head 1/4” ratchet or a ratcheting wrench. Can’t remember which.

Hi Joe, Replaced transmission filter and did 2 drains and fills Honda DW-1 trans fluid yesterday. The trans shuddering at 20-30 mph had for years on 2012 CRV gone.

They actually had a service bulletin for that issue. Apparently it’s a software issue and they charge you for it to be fixed.

Great Video Joe, The CVT transmissions need to be serviced very well and this is part of the procedure. Of course, you know to never power flush transmissions. Great Job!

This one is actually the traditional automatic, not CVT. Certainly agree with avoiding power flushes tho.

Whoa... you already removed the cover for access to the drain plug... I needed that info. I've got mine jacked up and am very ready with everything needed but.... Because, my 2013 CR-V LX AWD with 5 speed transmission ... stiIl couldn't see the access panel... because it was in plain sight... because I was looking way too far back towards the center under the car. I saw the oil change access panel and took it off... I thought that must be it, guess what, no transmission plug there. For those of you who may need to know... this transmission plug access panel is directly in front of the car very front of the cowl. It's easily visible just by looking under the car, no need to crawl under it. Of course you need to get under there to loosen it and all that. It's way in the front part of the cowl. I've done one drain & fill the shaking is 85% better, still a bit at very slow acceleration at about 20 to 30 MPH. The thing was short one quart and it was an ugly brown color. I don't think the last owner ever changed this fluid or may even checked it, and they got their service done at a local Honda dealer too!

The access cover has two Phillips head screws. That’s all that needs to be removed to access the trans drain.

You need three quarts of the correct Honda transmission fluid, and the filter. Not everyone changes the filter but I like to change them when they’re accessible.

There's a better pair of clamp pliers that swivel Perfect for tight places. To do the best fluid change , you flush it with 10 liters That's the total trans capacity. You pop loose the high side line start the vehicle and run the high side line to drain in a bucket while at the same time constantly pour clean fluid in while its running That way you change the fluid 100%

I don’t have the factory service manual, but I’ve never done a multiple drain/fill process on a transmission before. A single drain and fill has been sufficient in the past.

Thank you for creating the video! How many miles did you have on your CRV that you felt it was necessary to change the ATF filter? Kind Regards I had the front of my CRV jacked up and drained exactly 3 liters out. I'm wondering if that's why I drained out more ATF fluid than the 2.7 quarts specified in the owner's manuals. 2.7 quarts = 2555 ml. Thank you

My vehicle was at 100k miles. The 2.7 quarts is a reference. It’s common to have to doublecheck the actual amount afterwards. Don’t forget that it’s a heat sensitive fluid which shows a different level cold and hot as well.

When can you tell that the fluid needs replaced? My car is shuttering when it accelerates on the 2nd or 3rd gear. Does this sound like a symptom of transmission fluid needing replaced?

The fluid interval is based on mileage. 50k miles is a good starting point if you’ve never done it but I think the interval is 30k. Owners manual would have exact numbers. Changing the fluid is never a bad thing. Sometimes minor symptoms can clear up with fresh fluid.

I have the same car. I currently have about 107,000 miles on it and I don't think the transmission fluid has ever been changed. Checked the fluid and it's a brownish color with no burnt smell. Ive heard that changing the fluid after long intervals can cause problems. Do you think I should still change the fluid or should I just leave it at this point?

107k miles for first transmission service doesn’t worry me. 180k to 200k would concern me. But there is always a level of risk when it hasn’t been serviced within its proper interval. You may be able to check Honda dealer records to see if it was ever done. Also, the way I approach these issues is by knowing how long I’ll keep the vehicle. I keep vehicles a very long time so I know that when I do a service I’m saving myself headaches later on. When I say a long time I mean that it’s common for my vehicles to be with my family for 7-10 years and are only sent to the scrap yard when they’ve reached over 230k miles and also need an expensive repair that doesn’t make sense financially for that vehicle. If you don’t keep your vehicles that long then maybe your approach is to not worry about it and let be the next owners problem.

Mike you can leave the fluid in and expect the transmission to fail sometime, or you can change the fluid and filter and hopefully it will not give up on you... If the fluid is brown I would want to get it changed for sure.. Its supposed to be a red color..

Honda is a scam company. I have the same vehicle. My engine consumes 2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. This is what caused my start up rattle. Right before it was time to change the oil, I checked the oil level. It was at least 2.5 quarts low. This very low oil level caused the timing chain to dry out and stretch, thus, causing it to rattle.

I haven’t done any videos of it yet. It starts with an upgraded AGM battery, 320A alternator, a/d/s/ amplifiers for main speakers and a 1000W Boston Acoustics amp for the 12W7 sub.

@@JoesCarSmartsNY oh nice. I just bought a 2013 CRV a day ago. With 87k miles for $3800. The guy I bought it off. Thought the transmission was going out. I just changed the fluid 3 times and filter. Its running good as new now. The car I had before I took the whole system out. Looking to put it in CRV. Just don't know where to run 0 gauge wire through. I also have a 12in JL Audio. W7 with a t1500 Rockford Fosgate amp.

Not really. Maybe every 100k miles. Some people say it’s not necessary at all, but I’d rather change it periodically.

I actually initially filled with 2.5, checked the level, and added the additional to make 2.7. When I checked again it was full.

Just looked at my sons Honda cr-v it was down 2 quarts and from the little dot that was left on dip stick it looked black, it was shifting very rough like I was driving over unpaved road, I filled it up and now running smoother, should I drain it out or did putting two quarts in like doing a change anyway??

I would drain and refill with correct Honda fluid. Also look for leaks. The missing fluid went somewhere.

I believe I used Honda Original ATF DW-1, but I would call or go to a dealer to confirm this. It was more affordable than I thought it would be. On newer vehicles I always use the exact OEM trans fluid. I’d rather spend a little more on fluid but know that it’s EXACTLY what the manufacturer calls for.

Question, was your vehicle level when you drained ? Seems like if you have the front up on ramps it will drain more than the 2.7. just curious. Also, do you know the torque spec for the drain plug? Thanks

It was on ramps. I was not worried about it because it had the dipstick above. I can add the fluid, back it off the ramps to a level surface and check the fluid level there. I don’t think that you will get more or less fluid out with it on ramps.

What's the torque spec for the transmission drain plug? I have 36' lbs written down. I have seen a lot of damage over the years by over and under torqueing fasteners and plugs

I don’t remember the exact torque to be honest. However, I think it’s in the 30s. Anything in the 30s is unlikely to cause any damage.

Are you talking about the little “nubs” that push into the rubber grommets? The video says spray them with a little oil and just pull that part of the box upwards. Those rubber grommets will “pop” off the studs.

Changing the filter out is definitely recommended. If for some reason you can’t get a new filter or replace the filter at the same time you replace the fluid that’s okay. You can change the filter at a different time. You would just have to add a little more transmission fluid when you change the filter later because some will spill out when you remove the filter.

No. Honda says it's lifetime. Some say it's an ATF cooler, some say it's an ATF warmer regardless it houses a filter element.

If there is a filter, do you think it will never be completely plugged up and it is going to continue to filter for a lifetime?? Perhaps then - Lifetime - is the time the transmission last before it blows up on you..

My dealer told me 2.7. If you want to start with 2.3 and check it that would be safe. But make sure you check the level and add fluid if necessary.

It’s possible that your CR-V being 2WD causes it to need a smaller amount of trans fluid also. This just occurred to me.

It’s correct procedure to change the “crush” washer each time. They’re supposed to be one time use.

For me? Yes. Everyone is different when deciding what maintenance to do and when. I keep my cars for many years so any way I can extend the life of my vehicle I do it. If you’re not keeping the car for too long, you could leave it alone and whatever slow and long term damage that results wouldn’t be your problem.

That’s incorrect. It has one, and I replaced it. Watch the video to see where it is. It’s a little tricky to get to, but it’s there.

This guy is out of his mind. The filter is a cinch to get to from underneath, 20 min tops. Also never flush the transmission never and by putting in the 2.7 quarts he definitely overfilled it. Take this video down

I did not see a good way to get to the filter from underneath. If there’s another way I’m glad you’re helping other people know that. And my method was about 8 mins in real time if that matters. Replacing transmission fluid at 100,000 miles is definitely a good idea. I don’t understand what makes you think a transmission should never have its fluid replaced. 2.7 quarts is exactly what Honda calls for in their service manual, according to the Honda dealer (where I bought the fluid)....and I checked it after the procedure and the level was perfect. So, a different (and better) approach to the filter is possible, changing transmission fluid IS a good practice, my transmission is NOT over filled and this video isn’t going anywhere.

Joe S. Thanks for the video. And since Honda maintenance schedule indicates transmission fluid (along with filter) replacement at 60,000 miles I think this should be on every CR-V owners to do list. The main thing to remember is Honda is very proprietary as to using Honda factory replacement fluid as opposed to using aftermarket replacement Honda specific fluid. As to replacing and flushing it is two different animals. Many transmission techs no longer recommend flushing as opposed to replacement. Replacement yes, flushing an old or very worn transmission maybe not if it is not a problem, yet. All in all it is the owners decision as to how much maintenance they want to handle either DIY or service agent. Again thanks for the informative video.

maddad621 that filter is not a serviceable part and if you check it's Honda, it is not meant to be replaced. That being said, can't hurt.
