The S means sequentially turbocharged, so there is one small turbo and one larger for different purposes. They work together for power though.

Maybe turbo charged diesel v8 and supercharged diesel v8

SDV8 is in a twin-turbo sequential lay-out (where one turns on after the other. The "S" in SDV8 stands for sequential) whereas the TDV8 is only a single turbo

Sdv8 is just the newer engine, the tdv8 was used in the previous model of range rover. However the tdv6 and sdv6 have a different power output, tdv6 giving 256hp and the sdv6 giving 306hp. The TD engine variants tend to be the lower power outputs with the SD engines being more powerful. They're both twin turbo v8s just the tdv8 is used in the older style range rover

It's a diesel V8, not one of those nice sounding gasoline V8's.

@@arnemaeschaelck5012 but it is more economical and practical than a petrol V8 as well as more torque and better towing. It still sounds good.
