2013 Toyota RAV4 Test: What the Car Magazines don't want you to know about 0-60 MPH Times 

I don't understand why these guys are testing a Rav4's 0-60 speed.... People DON'T buy Rav4 for its speed!!

It's a shame there's no more v6. My sport v6 goes like a rocket

This is why I look at you guys first. You guys know how to truly review a car for the every day driver not for some big business magazine co. and you throw in some humor (and Andre) for fun! Great videos.

0 to 60 is one measure but not used in regular driving. Its more beneficial to look at 30 to 50 or 40 to 60 or 30 to 60 even. Seems more relevant to daily driving n since u guys talk about real world testing it might be a good addition.

Thanks very much! We think it is very interesting how the 0-60 times correlate to the weight of driver. Plus, there's about a third of a second difference between the lightest and heaviest driver. Image what that means when you run the car to 60 MPH ( like the car magazines) with almost no fuel and a 140 pound driver. We suspect we would get at least a half a second faster time.

We've never been able to get 0-60 times as fast as the car magazines. We think that in the real world Magazine these numbers are almost impossible to achieve.

Thanks for the reply. I did not see any shifting in the video and thought I should ask. I knew the select would not act as a manual since it is electric. I did not see much info on what a select does. I see now it helps more with keeping the RPM down and engine quite then going faster. The shifting is totally backwards from a manual.

I have to admit, this body style to me looks great. I had a 2007 V6 Sport and I traded it for a 2010 V6 Sport. Two advantages, one, no spare at all, two, newer and low miles. My wife has a 2010 2.5 Camry, and it does good in that car, but in my opinion it's just not enough engine for the weight in a RAV4. I'll keep my V6. It does 60 around 6.3 and I weigh 272 lbs. Plus, I have a hitch as well and that's added weight.

TFL Car: great job, fellas. People really need to understand that the 0-60, in fact all performance number manufactures and automotive magazines get are best times for a given set of attempts. Usually under ideal (or near ideal) conditions. I get the y'all are providing real world data at altitude, which varies from what the auto manufactures and magazines get. Some people are just not going to get it.

whoa! 9.5 seconds for the first run at sea level with Nathan driving, That's pretty good for an AWD 4cylinder SUV. What Shocked me is that there is a whopping 3 second difference when you guys go back up to the mountains in the last run with Nathan driving ! Thats a Huge difference !

I think a bunch of people fail to appreciate mile high driving. The 0 to 60 helps me understand how a vehicle may perform in the real world. Like merging onto an interstate highway. THANKS

I have my toyota rav4 8 years now and I still love it no problems with it just regular oil changes check fluids basic stuff.

I am an owner of the 2013 rav4 (limited) and the engine is much toned down in Eco mode (like Nathan had it) than in normal or sport mode.

Just got the car after having a 2010 Matrix, and I like it.

Did you guys use the sport mode or eco. I got 8.9 in sport mode in San Diego, however I weigh 175 lbs.

you had her on ECO MODE. I have the same suv, limited fwd... in sport mode 0-60 I got 7 sec and I weigh 200lbs

I'll just keep my 3rd gen...V6 is a must for me, and mines's rear door opening to the side for a short person is very helpful ☺️

Maybe next time you could try a 0-60 with all 3 of you guys in the car. Also, you guys say you do real world tests, and you do, but how many Toyota drivers have you seen torque an engine?

MT showed their secrets recently in a viper vid, it's about controlling every factors: tire pressure+temp, grippy tarmac, and on top of it, trying every possible rev launch. Some will launch better at 3200rpm, some at 4200, ect. Empty tank, maybe?

An Edmunds test driver said that they don't know how the car mags get such quick acceleration numbers since edmunds numbers are generally some of the slowest even though they use a test track and v box just like the car mags. I think it has something to do with the track itself as it might not be as sticky. Quick awd cars perform about the same under their methods.

The 2013 RAV4 has a 6 speed select. would it not get faster times if you shift to get to 4, 5, 6 sooner??

Viewers just need to be educated regarding what density altitide is, and what elevation, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure does to performance of a vehicle. Both an increase in temperature, pressure, and, to a much lesser degree, humidity will cause an increase in density altitude. Thus, in hot and humid conditions, the density altitude at a particular location may be significantly higher than the true altitude. People who are skeptical need to do some research :)

The car mags use 1 ft roll-out times like at a drag strip so they're not technically 0-60 times as the car is going some speed at the 1 ft trigger point to start the run. That's why they are faster....

I have seen a professional race driver take considerable time off a 0-60 time for a Prius (and no weight difference). Although this was before Toyota changed the effectiveness of power braking. But there are other ways to achieve improved time: manual shifts (if RAV4 is capable and fast enough for that) and disable VSC (especially with hot tires). That said in the real world no one is doing any of that stuff:-).

Holy crap thats slow. My old v6 rav4 was TWICE as fast 0-60! 6.2 seconds I think it was?! Toyota needs to bring back that awesome v6 or at least slap a turbo on that damn thing!!!

The official reason was that Toyota claimed only 10% of the consumer base bought the optional v6 for the Rav4. If that is true I'm guessing they saved more money by not making/offering it and focusing on other things.

Most of the times, people will never get the exact MPG and 0-60 times in real world. Even if the condition may be the same but the weight of the driver will effect it. I think they say for every 10 pounds it takes away 1HP from average car. Car manufacturer always get excited when they can shave off 200lbs off their new model, because 200lbs make super difference in all performance area such as 0-60, braking distance, handling like corners and MPG. It play a big roll in every aspect of the car.

Nathan had it in eco mode, and sometimes you guys are a bit slow coming off the brakes to mash the gas, and since the solo uses gps when u come off the brakes and slightly roll, you start the timer. But I doubt any of these are that significant, maybe .5 seconds at most. So I kind of understand why people say that you don't do the 0-60 properly, but honestly, the whole point of your tests are real world performance.

He just said it is a mile above sea level that is one. And two it is a Rav-4 with a 4cylinder engine wanting better fuel economy. You can't get both power and fuel economy.

Please stop power braking the Yota and others, when you do that the engine revs to a certain momentum and then has to start moving the car from that rpm. When you don't power brake the engine it starts at an optimum power point and can proceed faster on through the rev range. For example if you were pulling a car with a rope yourself "not with another car" and you start off trying to run your gonna fail. If you start off at a pace where you can build up the momentum to run then you have it. Plus tacking the thing up to only 2,000 and something rpm does not put you in some wild torque inducing power-band. And yes, power braking can work for more powerful engines though.

Nah, the real way is not to put the pedal to the floor, it actually bogs the fuel system slightly. There is a sweet spot between 3/4 pedal and the floor which gives you more power than completly floored. I'm amazed

I don't doubt their result but keep in mind motor trend and car and driver probably got these results under very very very ideal condition. I have heard Audi S5 can do 0-60 around 4.8 seconds, but in reality, you would be very happy if you can get around 6 seconds.

Think the 4th gen destroyed the Rav4 for alot of buyers. Lower ground clearance, its even lower then my 2nd gen. Think most buyers would be happy upgrading to the Highlander, much more refine vehicle even tho it has a 5 speed till the 2014 comes

Nathan that was painful to watching that speedo getting to 60! I think Car n Driver got like 8 seconds or so. Thats probably with no gas and some skinny mini driving though! I find the hard to believe the new rav is a 8 second car though.
