+Yassir Ahmed, It is a little louder than the Enclave but not a great deal louder. The Enclave is larger and quite a bit heavier making the Toyota the better performing and handling option. The Enclave's dimensions make seating 8 a more comfortable affair however. Build quality isn't very far off and I would probably take the highlander over the Enclave unless I needed the extra room.

Thx for a very good review. As a 3-row car shopper, I was very interested in the second and third row seats and yours is the only one shows how a person fits in the back seats. Other reviews are just lame, reviewing a 3-row car without showing or actually sit in the back seats.

Today I just got the 2014 Toyota Highlander XLE model (sunroof and leather). Awesome! This accelerates soo fast (3.5 L engine) and smoothly because it has 6 speeds that 80mph feels like 55mph. PROS: - Voice activated commands for dialing a phone, playing a song, etc. - Double wishbone rear suspension means better handling and 3 inch wider interior in 3rd row. We hardly felt speed bumps. - Shelf for cellphone, Bluetooth, hands-free - BIG 8inch GPS TOUCHSCREEN and backup camera and apps like Accuweather, etc. - side mirrors have turn light blinkers - Sexy styling (looks a little like Jeep Cherokee and BMW X5) with chrome accents on the roofline. Integrated rear spoiler. The door's body tapers in toward the glass window as opposed to the usual boring glass and body flushed against each other. - 11 airbags (includes driver's knee) - traction control, stability control, ABS - sliding 2nd row seat makes it easy to get to the 3rd row - 3 ac outlets and a 110V outlet - BIG 245/60/18 tires - Auto dimming rearview mirror - Easy Driver Speak to amplify driver's voice to the rear passengers - 3 zones a/c system and controllable by 2nd row passengers - Fog lights - Daytime running lights - Rear glass on the tailgate opens - 1 push window down for BOTH driver and passenger - Power tailgate and height adjustable for shorter people or garage doors. - Push button start - sunshades in the 2nd row - garage homelink - heated side mirrors - heated seats (I live where it's hot so I don't really care about this) - windshield wiper deicer (I live where it's hot so I don't really care about this) - 19mpg City, 25mpg Highway - 24 months free Toyota maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations. - Toyota has the highest resale value - Toyota reliability CONS: - Tailights are not LED. - White LED light in front is only in higher models like LIMITED. - Big turning radius so parking is difficult. CONCLUSION: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I'll see what we can address when we have it for a week in February. It is unlikely however that Toyota will allow it to be taken off road since it is not really designed for that sort of duty.

Alex, As usual I enjoy your detailed well thought out reviews. But I have a follow up question for Highlander. Is there any update on 2.7L fuel economy? It was previously asked as you mentioned you observed considerable difference if fuel economy between 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder. I was wondering if you got a chance to do extended test of fuel economy with 4 cylinder engine? Thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
I keep trying to get one but Toyota keeps telling me that sales are less than 5% and that dealers are reluctant to stock then so they don't plan on putting one in their test fleet. Personally I wish they would change their mind as I found the 2.7L engine and the 6-speed a totally acceptable combo.

very informative review my friend. One thing tho, the reason they put the 4cyl only on the based model is because Toyota believes only 10% of the customers will opt for that engine based on previous sells. that's why the only put that 4 on the base trim, which is smart to reduce cost on building more 4 bangers across the board. Same thing goes with the Sienna 4cyl. not many people are interested on that. Now even with a decent power it is not much impressive if you are looking to load your full sir SUV with either passengers or luggage and still pull your SUV with no sweat. What doesn't make sense if that Toyota removed the V6 on the Rav4. It only sucked 1MPH over the standard 4cyl. Anyways, amazing review :)

@AAutoBuyersGuide

According to Toyota you get: smoked headlamps, LED daytime lamps, color keyed heated power outside mirrors with memory, turn signal and blind spot warning indicators,puddle lamps and folding features, the chromtec wheels, backup camera with dynamic lines, perforated leather, cooled seats, memory drivers seat, power front passenger seat, wood grain trim, blue LED ambient lighting, and all windows get auto up/down, 6 extra speakers and you have the option of adding the radar cruise control, auto high beams, etc.

mark williams I here the CX-9 will be all new for 2017. It's the last of the lineup still based on Ford engineering. Now that Mazda has divorced themselves from Ford as part owners to do their own thing, it should be as interesting as the 2015 CX-5 which is all Mazda engineered. Not sure why the redesigns are 2 years apart.

Once upon a time Toyota used to put a little button under the steering column. It was almost in the footwell so you'd have to get down, stuck you head in the footwell to see it. Since it was that way in the 2013 I'd start by looking there.

Hi Alex. I just purchased a brand new 2014 Highlander XLE FWD 2 weeks ago but it just arrived at the dealer few days ago so this is not the car I test drove. My concern is the engine on my car seem a little louder when I accelerated than the one I test drive. I had someone look at it and he said it sounds normal. I don't think there is something wrong with the car but why is it louder than the one I test drive? Is that normal?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
It is hard to comment. The only way to be sure it is louder excluding variables would be to measure it on the same road with sound level measuring equipment.

Hate the extended profusion of the head and tail lights. It just looks as if the light fittings didn't fit in to the panel correctly. In Australia a lot of the Toyota products (we don't get the Highlander) have protruding light modules. A neat smooth body panel fit of the lights would do wonders.

I forgot to ask, how does the AWD works on the Highlander. Is it as high end like for example Acuras AWD system?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
No, Acura's AWD system is unique in that it can torque vector across the rear axle and it can direct more than 50% of the power to the rear. The Highllander uses a fairly typical slip-and-grip style system with a computer controlled center coupling that can connect or disconnect at any time to send up to 50% of the power to the rear. Both the front and rear differentials are open diff designs without any vectoring ability other than the standard traction control system. The center coupling can be forced into lock mode via a button on the dash under 25 MPH.

QUESTION: I called Toyota dealership here in Toronto, Canada. you mentioned in your video that it comes in 2.7L 4 C, but the dealership told me that the 2014 does not come in 4C anymore. 3.5 is standard going forward. Do you know if the information given to me by the dealership in correct? Could it be that Highlanders in US only come in 2.7L and 4C. Could you kindly respond. thanks
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
That is possible. Since it was a USA focused event they would only tell us that not every engine would be available in every country. Some countries will be 2.7 only, some 3.5 only but they didn't say where that would be.
@fartman10284
@fartman10284 10 лет назад
If you want 3rd row comfort and AWD.... Toyota has a solution. The Sienna AWD, but you get the older Toyota Active Torque Control system (similar to the old RAV4 minus the "lock", similar to the Matrix & Venza).

Hi Alex, Would you buy the highlander or the pathfinder?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
If I had kids, the Pathfinder has the middle seats that allow you to keep a child seat (forward facing) in place while collapsing it to get in the third row. If you want to tow, the Highlander is the better car. When it comes to snow traction they are about equal. The Highlander does have that 8-passenger option as well which Nissan doesn't offer.

The Highlander really isn't intended for off road use. The center coupling does lock under 25 MPH but both the front and rear differentials are open units so if one front wheel and one rear wheel loose traction you won't be going anywhere quickly.

Wonderful and detailed review Alex. Very relevant for normal car buyers than many websites. Appreciate if you can cover these in your review or add a another review with these additional points. Most important to my family is comparison of 3rd row comforts and access compared to Pilot. Is 2.7liter engine really adequate when filled with 8 people(4 adults and 4 kids).? Rea lworld Fuel Economy: As per Toyota there is only 1 mpg difference between 2.7L engine and V6. But you stated it almost 10 miles. Is it fluke/calculation error or is there that much dramatic difference(we are talking 50%+ fuel economy difference). I know too many questions, but I am seriously considering 8 seater, and have been debating between this and Pilot. Also Appreciate if you can provide some info/video about luggage capacity with 3rd in place vs with 2 rows.
@nayudusrini
@nayudusrini 10 лет назад
I am looking for similar info. Mainly which one to pick without going to porky Chevy traverse. Pilot vs Highlander for 8 passenger.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
I was quite surprised at the fuel economy we got with the 2.7L as well. Toyota doesn't put that much difference between them however we got higher than EPA numbers in the 4-cylinder and slightly below EPA numbers in the V6. The Pilot is larger than the Highlander so the seats in the 3rd row are more spacious. The Pilot is a much older vehicle however and due for a redesign soon. I didn't have a problem with the 2.7L engine and 6 other people jammed into the Highlander, but it's not going to feel like a race car. Sadly Toyota does not offer AWD with the 2.7L engine either. I'll have more detail on the highlander in about a month when we will have one for a week.
@chinnana583
@chinnana583 10 лет назад
Alex on Autos Thanks quick reply Alex. I am not worried about 4WD as we drive in urban environment and it rarely snows here. Glad to know that 2,7L has enough grunt to handle 6 adults, then I would definitely consider that. I never liked matchbox shape of pilot, but If the space in the 3rd is considerably more in Pilot and mileage is not that different, I may have to look at that. Please do share your experience once you use it for a week. Really appreciate your quick reply. Thank you

This generation Highlander isn't a great deal bigger. If you need much more room than your 07 Highlander I would suggest looking at something like the Pilot or Pathfinder.
@rkgsd
@rkgsd 9 лет назад
Harryson Xiong The 2007 Highlander was 2 generations ago. The vehicle was smaller overall back then. Even the latest RAV 4 is almost the same size as it. According to the specs, the previous gen Highlander (2008-2013) has 2" more front legroom (43") than the Explorer and Edge along with about 4 other mid-sized SUVs. That's good for a 6'2 person like me. The 2014 and up has even more legroom. Obviously it's not full size like the Sequoia but it's a descent size for many and better on gas.
