Hi I'm Meg! My F150 has been a bit neglected, so today, I'm taking 2014 F150 EcoBoost to the car wash and giving her an oil change. Let's see what today's adventures bring...

You did get the click on the torque wrench, but at 20 lbs it’s super quiet and a gentle click that’s hard to feel/hear if you haven’t felt it a lot or practiced with it. Luckily, if it was still able to turn, it shouldn’t have hurt anything. A direct-to-metal epoxy primer will really help with the rust prevention when you redo the bumpers as it is a waterproof primer (still needs to be applied correctly), but it’ll last a lot longer, and so will whatever you decide on for the topcoat finish. Keep up the great work, I love your enthusiasm and perseverance, it makes your videos such a pleasure to watch.

Whenever you change the oil and filter. When you put the new filter on it needs to be a little bit tighter so use the filter tool to give it a little twist with the tool

Great job Meg. When you get around to doing the bumpers I would recommend having them sandblasted. It’s pretty much the only way to get rid of the rust permanently.

Don't feel bad about taking longer, even the pro's have problems with certain vehicles. The Lexus IS200 was the worst! When they came into my oil change shop especially when they were brand new, the filters were on excessively tight and they were horribly difficult to reach, AND they were in a location where you couldn't get a wrench on them. One day it was a New Lexus and both me and my lube tech had a hand on the filter to be able to get it to turn. We were convinced that they put the filters on before they put them in the car and put them on WAY too tight. Better to do hot oil changes because hot oil has a lower viscosity which means it flows better, so it will drain more. Also the drain plug gasket is replaced at every oil change if you don't want it leaking. AND a lot of cars have aluminum drain pans, which means the metal is soft and over tightening can destroy them. I think on the Ford you're safe, but at the same time when replacing the engine on my MR2 I ended up putting the oil pan drain plug on hand tight and didn't realize it until thousands of miles later when I put a wrench on it to take it off and it didn't need a wrench. Didn't lose a drop. Got lucky. At the oil change I learned that the Lexus 2 liter engine oil filter had the same threads as my 1.6 liter MR2 oil filter. The seal was *slightly* bigger but my engine oil filter mounting plate was big enough so I put the bigger filter on, worked a treat. A lot of manufacturers share bits like that between models to save on costs. Also there was a guy when the internet was new like 30 years ago who documented cutting open like 20 different oil filters. Mobil 1 filters were in the top 3 I think, Fram was at the very bottom. I bet if you searched you could find it.
@Meg.August

Thank you @SeanBlader ! Sometimes it can get so frustrating when thinking "this should be easy! why is this taking so long!" but it's true, sometimes it just works like that, and especially when those filters are in such tricky spots! Sounds like that Lexus you were talking about was pain! And thanks so much for the tips on doing an oil change with hot oil, and replacing the gasket each time - that actually makes a lot of sense. I'll try and find that video you mentioned about looking at the different oil filters - sounds super interesting and I love doing comparisons and 'science experiments'. Thanks for watching and for the ongoing support on the videos!

I dab of oil on the filter gasket helps. It can be tightened with a wrench, just not too much. Three quaters of a turn from the point the filter gasket touches is what I've read in service manuals. I did that once with a torque wrench, out of curiosity, and it exactly mached the manufacturers torque spec for the oil filter.

For some reason I keep thinking the newer F150 are " All " 5.0 Coyote Engines. For the Sump Plug / Oil Drain Plug get the OEM from Ford Dealer. Most OEM sump plugs have built in washer where it can be used 2-3 times.

A small tip as usual Meg, when filling the oil always take out the dipstick, as you put oil in it allows the air to push out the dipstick tube. You got a bit lucky it didn't burp at you and throw an oil bubble in your face. Keep up the good work, I'm sure you are inspiring people that think they can't do these things!

Funnily enough, I've recently been getting oil warning light come on after driving for more than 20 mins, but stop for a few minutes and it can be fine. But decided to just top it up, and remember hearing that you should start engine up for a bit and then re-check oil, I think so oil gets worked through all the channels. But was never sure how long you should leave engine running, was thinking 1-2 mins not 15-20 seconds. Annoyingly need to get more oil, but should change filter, and check for leaks.

Nice job! Used to do oil changes myself when my parents still lived in a house with garage, but now I don't have place to do it myself anymore. Back then tried different methods to fix rust damage too, but rust just tends to come back when it once has settled in. Never really got conclusive proof what method works to keep it away for longer time. We have snowy winters and salty roads here in Finland too ;) Very cool mountain views, nice place to take a walk 👍

I think it's great, but in my case I haven't bought a tool for the filter, which I did with a fixed wrench and the old alternator belt to loosen the filter. You can try it one day.
@dj_paultuk7052
@dj_paultuk7052 3 месяца назад
Controversial....But i always try and pre-fill the oil filter where you can. Yours is a horizontal mounting, so you cannot fill it as such, but you could roughly half fill it with oil. Reason being is when you go to start the engine post oil change there will be no oil in the filter. It will take about 3 seconds to fill and longer for the oil pressure to rise. Meaning the big ends will be without oil pressure. Im a ex Saab Master Tech and in my training they told us to do it, so i still do it to this day.

The latest trend in changing the oil is to use the power of negative pressure to suck up the oil from the engine through the hole in the gauge, making it easy to change the oil. I've been doing car maintenance as a hobby for decades, and once I learned how to replace things by sucking them up, I've always used that method ever since.

Hello Meg, I must say I always like to watch your videos. Good job on the oil change. I just had a thought on the drain plug gasket. You can buy the gasket separately either amazon or other online place and have a few on hands as you don't need to change the bolt on each oil change but should change the crush washer (sometime on cars they are aluminum or plastic) Hope this helps. Good job

Good job! You don't have to rely on quick lube places that sell inferior oil and filters at inflated prices. Your torque wrench was clicking as you were using it, some have a very low audible click, or just have a slight release when the torque is reached. I always change out the oil plug gaskets, if the vehicle has them, at every oil change.

If you plan on holding onto your truck for a while, consider finding a nearby Corrosion FREE or Krown service center. Alternatively, you can undertake the task yourself using a gallon of Blaster Surface Shield, air compressor, and spray bottle. Something to look into.

@@Meg.August Fantastic! Here's my approach along with some tips: I use a sewer jetter drain kit attached to my pressure washer to effectively clean the frame and hard-to-reach areas. The key is to use hot water, which aids in dissolving salt and loosening any flaky, corroded steel. This cleaning step will take some time. For removing corrosion, I've also used a needle scaler, among other tools. This part can be labor-intensive, and whether you decide to go through with it depends on your dedication to keeping your truck in good condition over time. Once completed, and with regular maintenance of Blaster Surface Shield (or a similar product), it shouldn't need to be redone. You can choose to skip this step. It's something I did since I plan to keep my truck for many years. For protection, I apply Blaster Surface Shield, though Corrosion FREE or Krown are also effective alternatives. I use a Woolwax spray gun for its application, specifically the gun and bottles, but not their fluid since Woolwax and Fluid Film tend to wash off too easily. The wands included are especially useful. I undertake this maintenance annually to protect against metal corrosion. Having dedicated numerous hours to research and living in an area with heavy salt usage, I've found this method to be the most effective for me.

Pennzoil Platinum, on sale at Candian Tire, combined with a rebate from Pennzoil (aka Shell) works out to sub $30 for 5 liters. Rebates are usually active twice a year. And I usually have a stock pile of oil (and air) filters on the shelf that I toss into my occasional RockAuto parts orders at the end as long as they don't increase the shipping price, hence $ bargain. Between maxing out oil sales+rebates opportunities, and accumulating filters, I usually have more than a year of supply on the shelf.

Meg August - Hi Meg ! I've watched entire video and I'm impressed that You've done oil change the " old fashion " way = what I mean by that ? = You've remembered to lubricate rubber gasket /seal of new oil filter with a bit of oil . Also very important , that You've filled up with new oil to a half and You've started the engine ( to suck oil in ) , then You've added after that a bit more to make sure , that oil level is between min.-max. indicators on a oil dipstick . = PERFECT . It is also worth always to check again = oil level and oil sump bolt after 20-50 miles = that way You never go wrong . And You won't believe , how many ( even ) dealer services overfill a max. level with oil ( leading to terrible results like head gasket and etc.. ) . Regards PJ .
