This week, I'm taking on MORE RUST! I'm going to attempt to get the body of my F150 rust-free. Is this a bad idea?.... Maybe! Stay to the end to find out...
Never try to wipe away drips or runs. As you found out, it only ruins the finish. Spray light and many layers; don’t try to get full coverage with each coat, build up. That will lower the risk of runs/drips, and if you do get them, let them dry fully and then wet sand them out.
1000% correct. I definitely learned a valuable lesson in spray painting that day! Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely keep that in mind for future painting projects lol!
@@Meg.August Between coats using a hair blow dryer that blows hot air on it helps also, and I blow dry runs until they flatten out while the paint is still wet. Paint can paint runs easy because they put way more thinner reducer in them so that the paint doesnt get to thick in the can
very brave of you Meg to do bodywork as there is no hiding! you made a huge difference and protected it for a lot longer, brake cleaner and you call them zap straps are a home mechanics must items!!
I think your main issue with drips is you’re spraying way too close. Spray from 6 inches away and work your way over the surface in a single pass, then go back and add more layers - build slowly and from a decent distance and it won’t get wet enough to drip…
Learning how to learn, and managing frustration along the way, is probably more meaningful than the finished job. The ability to learn is itself a skill to be practiced, upon which other skills can be built. I’m enjoying the journey!
When it comes to DIY skills/trades, mistakes are one of the main ways you can learn. I used to get upset about mistakes. Now I only get upset if I can’t learn from them, and that rarely happens, especially with the internet. Often the lesson is, you need the right tool. Sometimes it’s a technique or skill/practice issue. But as long as I figure out how I would do it correctly next time, I’m totally cool with it.
I 1000% agree Kev! Some of the biggest challenges in these projects for me is learning how to manage stress, frustration and perfectionism. Learning is tough and is totally (as you said) a skill in itself to be practiced. So happy to hear you're enjoying the journey, thank you for being here!
Hi Meg, you're doing a great job. I watched your bumper restoration too. I have just one suggestion. When you are doing a rust repair it's a good idea to use a rust converter before you prime. Rust can sometimes break through new paint.
Another interesting and entertaining Motivational Video, Great Job Meg, U Rock! Cheers from South Texas! Now, I gotta Rotate the Air in My Tires! Haha.
Do I see another painting project on the horizon? I noticed you tried to keep the front bumper out of your shots. 😃 But wait, RATTLE CAN MEG has got this!! I can imagine you starting the repair video with cans on your hips (Wild West style). Lol
lol!!! 😂 Yes, that bumper will be an upcoming painting project and honestly I had every intention on doing it at the same time as this body work but white rust reformer is harder to come by than I thought! If Canadian Tire had had more cans of this Rust Check stuff, I would have gone for it. Will get to it eventually 😊
You should not touch the spots with your hand after you've wiped them clean of dust and grease. Your hands have oils. Great job anyway. I've been neglecting this job on my car. It is scary to fix the body paint even though it is a old "who gives a F" car 🤣
10:57 Don’t do like this. Those cables will wobble and vibrate during driving. When you fix them tightly on the metal parts - say good buy to the cables isolation. I really suggest you to use plastic a hose for cables or whatever you name it…
I can't believe the ton of rust your Truck has at only 10 years old. I have a 21 year old Toyota that barely shows any rust. Great work and patience on your part. Kudos to you for tackling such an extensive project. Thanks for Sharing!
I have used Eastwood Rust Encapsulator Aerosol White for about 7 years to maintenance a fleet of service vehicles. Works like a charm, follow the directions, and a little goes a long way.
When I used a wire wheel it was best to wear gloves to save your hands from getting hurt, spend $6 at harbor freight for a wire cup/wheel set, & use the drill at the max speed, not slowest. Rustoleum Rust Reformer IS great as it has saved my tools & shovels for many years.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, gloves would have been a good idea, and I will try a faster speed next time lol! Good to hear that Rustoleum Reformer worked for you - there's hope for my truck's paint job this time haha!
It doesn't have to be perfect- it's a truck used for truck things- moving big items from one place to another. The important part is keeping rust from destroying the truck.
Im just as amateur as you and when i was painting my BMW E34 rear bumper, i had many drips. I soon noticed that its just easier to let it dry, sand flat and repaint 👍 Wiping made it harder to fix after it was dry
The passenger side is worse because the road is generally more bumpy on the edge ... Which is why CD changers were mounted on the drivers side .. At least back in the 90s
😁🥰Excellent Rattel can fix ! ❤Pro tip for the future . sandable build up primer . water sanding BASECOAT before clear coating gives an ultra smooth finnish. Watching a pro paint video will explane it. thanks
I love your choice of 'mystery suspense music' inserted in just the right places usually followed by a giggle or a groan of aggravation. The 17 yo gal who buys your truck in the future, thanks you for preserving it today for her....and YEAH! SCREW that Screw! I agree!
Nice blanket and foam pad fort :) Having an older vehicle is nice because, like you said, it doesn't matter if you make mistakes on it. My Ford Expedition is ten years old and has the paint peeling off the aluminum end gate. I'm feeling inspired to look into repairing it myself.
You can buy spray cans filled with automotive paint. I bought a can from NAPA 30 years ago for $35.00 CAD. It was a quality paint. Far better then any box store sprzy can.
In the first video when she had black bags taped to the side of the truck I thought it looked like a cool vinyl graphic. So I’m on board with a black and white theme. It’s also just easier to make a black bumper look good DIY than to match the factory gloss white.
Thanks for the suggestion! I really like the all white on white look, so still trying to hunt for the best rust treatment that will allow me to keep them white.
A vinyl wrap - now there's an idea?! lol! I know a lot of people like black bumpers/black and white vibe, but I just love the white-on-white look so going to keep looking for a white rust-reformer solution! But thank you!
Don't push hard on the wire brush, easy is the key then you can control it. Also, yes you should wear a mask, ( I don't and don't care ) but I miss your exressions and pretty face.
Where does the term zap strap come from? At first I was like what’s she talking about then realized it was zip ties. I’ve been around zip ties my whole life, and watched many videos and never herd them called zap strap till your video. Just curious if that was a name brand of zip ties in Canada or something? I’ve seen allot of RU-vid content creators from Canada but they called them zip ties.
Great job,! I found using my mouse with 60 grit works well for rust, the drill with wire wheel carful...I ended up in ER with metal strand all the way to my muscle in my forearm ...😮
My 2007 Dodge Sprinter has rust blisters and a little superficial rust that is sanded and awaiting my finishing a repair on.... while the weather is still nice. If the first coat bonds well, the rest protects that first coat. I was never able to get a match with Duplicolor, but even mismatched, stabilized patchwork is better than rust. People still ask me if the van is new. 2 years ago, I sanded out a bunch of these blisters and painted..... no recurrence through the same areas. All my rust is on top of the primer, under the paint. You inspired me to get on it today!
Para futuras referencias, en lo que respecta a la remoción de oxido en superficies metálicas, se recomiendan utilizar con excelentes resultados los DISCOS FLAP. Saludos
Another video displaying your wonderful determination Meg. It appears your area uses about as much Salt we do in Indiana. Even worse than most places would be Michigan, we always know one of those trucks when they come down here. I do feel bad for ya, a buddy of mine did that to his truck years ago and found out that can paint only lasts about a year. Hope you have more luck than him, we are pulling for ya. Thank you again for blessing us with your great attitude and determined hard work. Love how you are always fearless in trying to tackle anything.
Gotta spray the underside with something like Fluid Film every November. Makes a huge difference if you plan on keeping your vehicle for 20+ years. $60 a year will save everything, except the exhaust.
@@CarlYota From someone who had to work on oil base coated vehicles. I hope are understanding when your auto tech charges you double labor for having to go home and take a shower after working on that mess.
Thanks so much Jeremy! And appreciate you joining the Membership team!! I sure hope this paint job lasts more than a year lol but we'll have to see what this winter has in store for my truck haha. Glad you're enjoying the content, and I'm looking forward to sharing what I've got planned for the summer!
You could have shot primer on the bare metal and feathered it before color and or body putty. But I thought you did an amazing job! Love your show, keep up the great work!
Hate to tell you but you made a huge mistake using undercoat. It will make it rust even faster. Best thing is a simple oil spray using fluidfilm. Do it once a year and you will never have problems
As a fleet mech. that has work for over 25 years in the field i can tell you all that zip ties on wires is a bad idea unless you run them through something first we found that airbrake line works the best. we have been running E-450 cutaway vans and the earlist we can retire one is 600,000 miles and most get over a million miles.
Looks great! I have a few spots on my white f150 I want to try and tackle. Just little spots from rock chips here and there that have started to rust so hopefully it shouldn't be too bad lol 🤞🏻
Looks amazingly good Meg, 🎉👍🏾 I know ya just wanted to cover up the rust which is what is most important. Just a tip, when spraying paint ya may want to not get too close to the painting surface so the paint isn't splattering on and won't run. Lighter the spray from further 8-10 inches away will give ya a lighter cover. Spray will require more repetitions but will be a lot smoother. Of course primer and sanding would cover up easier and would make the final paint job way nicer. Over all you're always way more amazing than the average novice. Oh, The Q-Tip is genius 👍🏾 It also helps to recover from drips allowing the QTip to absorb the run. Thanks for the vids can't wait for next week.
I sprayed my pushbike when I was a young fella I used the vacuum cleaner it had a spray bottle made in glass it was connected to the bottom of the vacuum cleaner I used dulux paint canary yellow it cost me. $40 dollars for a little can I sprayed the undercoat grey and cut it with cutting polish then I sprayed the paint I hung the bike from the garage door it I cut it with the kitten then used the turtle it went off nice and glossy I had two mates who did there bikes with paint from a can and there’s didn’t look as nearly as good dulux make good paint worth the extra specially if you are spraying a collectable lol
Many of the tools are my partner's from when he worked in construction. He is also an avid car enthusiast so I'm very fortunate to have access to a ton of great tools! But I'm starting to gather a collection of my own tools, many of which I have been able to buy thanks to donations from viewers/subscribers!!!
I forgot to add, if you ever find flaws with the finished paint, after letting it cure for a few days, wet sand the area with 1500 grit paper on a sanding sponge and buffing it with a rubbing compound followed with a polish and wax can make flaws disappear before your eyes.
I HATE TO SAY IT BUT YOU NEED A MAN SWEETHEART BECAUSE YOUR JUST MAKING YOUR TRUCK WORSE THAN WHAT IT WAS YOUR WAY TOO CLOSE WITH THE SPRAY CANS WHEN PAINTING YOU WANT TO STAY AT LEAST 8-10 INCHES AWAY FROM THE PARTS YOUR PAINTING
All that matters is you cleaned the rust off and painted it so it'll stop rusting long enough to get another decade out of it, then sell it or have it painted by a shop.
Glad you are enjoying yourself..! you have a keen interest in Motor Mechanics and Autobody Repairs. So way not take a collage Course on this subject, i am sure it would be beneficial to you..! 🤔🤔😇😇👍👍
next time try Muratic Acid it kills rust and then prime and paint. what you used is excellent also but if they dont sell a color that works for your rust prevention this is just another option. you can buy at any hardware store. They use this acid to clean concrete and it kills rust very well
Pretty good outcome overall, be interesting to see how it holds up over the coming months 😊. I think black fender extenders would give it a good look if you go to replace the old ones at any point. 😃
Definitely wouldn’t notice it was touched up going down the road. Great job Meg seemed you had fun taking it on and I had a great time watching. You are killing it, have a great weekend
Thank you!!! Yes, from 10 feet away it looks pretty darn good I think! I definitely enjoyed this one, despite the multiple painting errors lol! Thanks for watching and hope you're having a great weekend too!
Hi Meg, doing a great job, I made every mistake you can think off when I started my paining project. I learned if you have a run to just let it dry, then lightly sand it and re coat. Next time you have rust on the underbody, you can duplicate the F250 color combo makes it easier to tape off since you’re truck has a body line. I hope you keep experimenting and knocking out those projects, you’re amazing !
I've been out for most of the day at Chester Folk Festival (UK) - I'm a musician with a Morris side - and arrived home to find my Meg Fix waiting, and it did not disappoint! Your reaction to accidentally scraping last week's work was priceless! 🥰🤣😂
Yes, it's a big improvement, well worthwhile doing, you've every reason to be proud of it! From tatty to natty in a fairly short time... and I've learned... cable ties, zip ties, ty-wraps and now... ZAP STRAPS!!😆
Change your drill direction so it is spinning away from the edge, then it won't grab. Make sure you have the chuck really tight when spinning it in reverse or the wire wheel will come loose. You should also have done everything in white then add the black part. You should always put primer over bare metal before laying base. It will cover much better. When you get a run, just wipe the run itself and respray. DO NOT wipe across the painted surface or it will F it up like you found multiple times. LOL.
You either need a rag soaked in paint thinner so you can wipe the entire wet coat of paint off. Or you just let the run dry and sand it flat. Trying to wipe just the run isn’t ideal. Of course, the real solution is to spray lighter so you don’t get runs in the first place.
Lol! Much to be learned haha and yes, white first would have been a good call. This paint was an all-in-one rust-neutralizer, primer (in white) so I'm hoping it'll do the trick 🤞🏻. But man, did I ever screw up badly with that wipe up LOL! I definitely had a good laugh watching that back 😄
It looks good. I just used several months ago ford wt white duplicolor to re spray the plastic bumbers covers on a 2005 lincoln town car I bought. The car looked new and the paint is good, but the woman that owned the car somehow kept rubbing up against things with the plastic bumper covers. It came out good and took a good 3 to 4 coats. You cant ever wipe off paint runs though, and the best way to fix it while its wet is keep a hair blow dryers plugged in and handy and if you blow hot air from it on the run the run will flatten out. I always keep an extension cord and blow dryer ready so I can grab it and put the heat to any run right away. Youre a legend Meg, I am age 68 and have never seen or known a do it yourself woman that gets good results like you in my entire life
I think the only issue which you already pointed out was, where you had the deep gouge marks, it probably could've done with some filler. I was quite shocked at how well the colour blended much better when you tried correcting where the paint started running. Looking forward, I wonder if a car detailing expert could machine polish the whole body and then add something like a ceramic coating, I've started watching a few UK car detailers so picking up on the 'Terminology' used but wether I'm talking about the correct applications for the correct vehicles, I've no idea! Those few cables running under the car, if you had any more of that plastic sheaf covering (Think it's called Kopex in the UK?), I think that would look good, and offer a but more protection. But you can definitely be pleased with all the work!
Thank you!! And you are totally right, Phillip. Looking back I do wish I had Bondo'd that one area on the rear fender area on the passenger side, but yes, still very happy with the result overall! Machine polishing is something I'd be interested in trying myself some day! And great idea about the plastic sheath covering for the wires, thanks for the suggestion!
Awe you may not think it's perfect, But what counts, Is you've saved that truck from many more years of rust continuing :) I did the very same thing on my Old 2008 Buick Allure yesterday. ;)
Quick tip for masking. Cover the entire car with a big plastic sheet and just cut out the area you need to work on. You only need to tape the area around your cuts then. It will be much quicker and safer to work with.
Great call on addressing the rust spots before they began to degrade the metal. Farmers deal with that all the time with their equipment and I can't think of a farmer who wouldn't compliment the work you did. Who knows, what you're learning today just might be a springboard for upcoming projects once the new property is in play. Just sayin. See you next week kid
Run over to Princess Auto and get some split-loom (convolute tube) to tuck the wires into, then zip-tie then to the frame. It does a couple of things, first off, it makes the wiring all nice and neat, and easy to tie up. It also protects the wires themselves from damage. You can also get some tube/cable clamps and install the split loom to the frame with self drill/self tap screws for an almost pro look. all of the items can be picked up at Canadian Tire too, just a bit more money. Love the way that you just dig in and do what you are doing. Like you point out, it's an old(er) truck and if it doesn't come out "perfect", at least it comes out better. Keep up. the good work
Hi, truck is looking great! I think the bumpers or at least the front bumper would look good painted with a black bed liner type paint. It would always be hard to get the white to match. Dave
Thank you!! The white for the bumper is definitely going to be tricky to match, but I just love the white-on-white look!! So hopefully I'll be able to find a rust neutrazlier/rust reformer in white 🤞🏻 but thank you for the suggestion, Dave!
Hi Meg 👋🏻 All projects are trial and error, but you did a great job my friend 👍🏻 Thank you, hope you have a wonderful weekend, stay safe and take care 😊 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you! 🫶🏻
the painter in me dosent have a single straw of hair left after watching this , but as a man i`m very impressed you did this at all :) and from a deistance , nobody will ever know :D
Good job on improving spots of rust the front bumper is another story I know you’ve tackled it before maybe new or chrome would be solution road salt I understand 😊❤
Thank you! Yes, the front bumper is definitely a beast in itself. I'm hoping I won't have to replace it entirely, so will do some more research into what the best product will be and will tackle it this summer!
In the U.S. we have a product called Duplicolor that is made for doing these kinds of touch ups on cars. For small chips they even have touch up paint pens. That kind of product may work a bit better.
Great job Meg! If you're open to the idea try looking into rocker guard coating for the lower part of the truck. It's more durable than paint for rock chips and comes in black so it will match your freshly coated frame
