Another Successful Task Completed! Awesome Lock Mechanism, ideas for my Truck Bed! Kudos 2 U for Tackling the Electrical N Mares! Try a Brit Car! It’ll change your Vocabulary! Haha! 1992 Mini Open. Yikes!
I love the enthusiasm you put into the work. When I seen you going to put the wire taps in I yelled don’t do it but you didn’t hear me unfortunately. I highly recommend cutting the wires and installing double wall heat shrink and soldering them all back together for a nice waterproof and corrosion resistant connection. Keep up the good work.
I second that! If you have any issues with that circuit the wire taps is the first place to check. It'd be worth going back in now that everything works then solder and heat shrink those connections.
I am more impressed with every video I watch. As an ASE certified technician with over 20yrs experience with an associates degree in automotive technology to boot, i must say that not only have your skills improved, but your quality of work is fantastic. But what impresses me the most is your God given patience, determination, common sense and willingness to learn. You have a natural mechanical skill and a basic sense of how things do and should work. Keep it up!!!
Thank you! I do enjoy what I do, and it is a great feeling to learn new skills and accomplish goals, but some days can (of course) be harder than others! A beer and some swearing does help from time to time lol!
Well, Meg, this is my first time watching some of your videos. They’re really good I see what you’re going through and that’s gonna be tough living off grid but the way you worked on that Ford should be no problem. Love your videos you go girl.
Hi Meg, found you by accident few days ago. I watched every one of your videos so far and looking forward to new ones. I LIKED every one of them. I don't know if I skip to through something. Did you ever find the well? I just finished watching your tailgate repair locking mechanism. I went back to it because I skipped on to something else. Anyway, we've been enjoying your videos so much. Now we're going to go back and finish watching you build the new stairs to your trailer. Have a great week.
Wow! Thank you so much! I'm so glad you've been enjoying the videos, that's awesome! I will have a new one coming out very soon! Hope you have a great week as well!
Great job on repair. Be careful using Scott clips or Guillotine clips, the don't always conduct, corroid easy, and more times than not they cut the wire in half over and over while crimping. Use soldering method its long last with better contact. Just slip some heat shrink over wire before soldering. I look forward to more repair videos.
lol thank you!! The satisfaction of having a project work out that well is quite something!! I'm honestly still that happy every time I open the tailgate haha!!
its amazing what a little lubricant can do to moving parts huh? Great video again! If you ever want to watch a really good mechanic trace wiring problems, watch Eric O. on his channel south main auto here on youtube.
Unbelievable - truly!! I'll need to re-grease all the joints and moving parts on my truck now with how much of a difference that made lol! Thank you for the suggestion/reference to Eric O - I'll check him out! And thanks for watching!
All u need now is a Zee Dee or cheapo brand tailgate assist strut so it won't slam down wen opening it grt video I have one of those locking pop thingy but haven't but it on yet so thanks for da how to video ur da best.. ❤
I think just giving the locking mechanism a clean up and grease certainly helped. I'd probably want to go all out and clean every bit of that mech and re-grease. No idea what grease to use, maybe white lithium? One tip I've heard for lubricating areas exposed to the elements is to rub pencil lead over the moving parts, the graphite is meant to be good. Dunno if Wago connectors exist in Canada, but they're becoming popular for electricians in Uk, and I guess Europe, they're kinda push down levers that lock the wires in so some types allow re-use, or just use as a temporary measure. If you're gonna add rust prevention treatment, please fill this. Oh this might be an idea for getting likes, a popular UK YT channel showing fencing, tarmac driveways, resin drives and fairly big lanscaping jobs, near the start of the video, one of the staff will select a like goal like 2,500 likes in 24hrs, and every time they totally smash these goals. That said you're already at 527 as I type!
Thanks for these tips! Yes, you're right, it's definitely worth re-greasing all these components semi-regularly, especially with our road conditions up here. Everything gets so gunked up and rusty! I've never heard of the pencil lead/graphite trick, would be cool if that works (cheap and easy by the sounds of it!)
Hello. You did it! I can easily understand the frustration when dealing with seized, rusty or in other way stuck mechanisms, which are a pain to figure out. Also joining in wire harness is like wire tapping, you need to find the right pair (or more pairs) and establish a good connection. Many times connection is not good enough or gets rattled in time, which adds problems. Since you're some kind of a snooper, you get what you need. 😁 Today I have to say that you fooled us a bit since the victory was not really unintended, as you said, but to my knowledge a very "aimed at" one, which in simple words means well intended! 😏It didn't happen by chance. Am I right? Anyway, excelent job! When you're doing some maintenance on any system, there is always something that wastes your time more than you expected and you better get used to it. Cheers!😉
All of that rust under the truck, YIKES. I guess that is just part of living in Canada and dealing with the harsh winters and salt on the roads. My 2012 Jeep Wrangler still looks great and very little rust but I live in South Carolina where we rarely get snow or a bunch of brine on the roads and as soon as the winter event is over here I take my Jeep to the car wash for a bottom blast to clean it off. My 2022 F150 has never seen winter weather yet.
Thankfully it's just surface rust but yes we do have harsh winters and lots of salt, sand, gravel and brine on our roads which just really takes a toll on our vehicles!
I bought a similar kit for my trucks tailgate, still haven't got round to installing it yet though, I hate wiring lol. Thankfully I think I can tie into the wires that feed lock on the fuel filler cap to save trying to run through a wiring harness like you did!!! Would recommend looking for tailgate dampers (like you find on a car trunk / hood), allows you to open the tailgate and it will softly lower on its own. Fairly cheap mod and makes it easier to open.
I also get very intimated by wiring - it's definitely something I've shied away from for a long time! That sounds like a good idea/approach for your tailgate latch, I hope it works out for you! And thanks for the suggestion for tailgate dampers, that's a cool idea!
It's funny because most youtube videos in english are in USA so "cheap" tooling is mostly different but since you are in Canada they are the same classic as some of mine... Mastercraft :D
Well there you have it! Jack of all trades or should I say Meg of all trades has done it again! I don't think we ever once doubted that you could do it, Meg the Mechanic!!! Once again, I admire the fortitude and willingness to complete the task that you set out to accomplish! Lots of folks would do well to take a page from your playbook and tackle those tasks that seem out of their comfort zone! The end result is a beautiful thing and fantastic feeling of accomplishment! Wonderful and inspiring videos, don't change a thing! Blessings to you for the week ahead!
Thank you so much, Terry, that's so kind! I'm really really grateful that my videos, and my journey of learning through these projects are having such a positive effect on people. I'm honestly so grateful and amazed by this wonderful community that is here along for the ride with me. Means a lot! Hope you have a great week, and see you soon!
Good for you, Meg!! Btw, I've accidentally stabbed my finger with an Ohm meter needle and have yelled way more than Meg when she did it. I'm thinking she held back, a lot. :)
Thank you!! Oh man, that was painful!!! I really should have put something solid under those wires to jab into, it's amazing I didn't stab myself more than I did lol!
Excellent job. Be sure wires are protected against chafing wherever it passes through sheet metal. Rubber grommets are ideal, but anything that can protect the wires will do. I almost would bet the key cylinder DOES work, it is just frozen up from lack of use and exposure to the worst place a lock can live..... the BACK of a vehicle! Spray a lubricant that has NO GRAPHITE or TEFLON..... Houdini lubricant is best, Silicone spray or CRC 5-56 will do. Spray liberally into the keyhole.... then take a non-worn-out key, insert and withdraw 3-4 time, try it left and right... and I will be surprised if the lock does not come back to working properly. The kit you put in is very handy, so kudos on getting it installed. You Rock!
Awesome job snaking that wire through! That's usually the hardest part with these types of jobs but you obviously had thought it through beforehand. Love it
Thank you!! People online definitely said it was the hardest part so I studied up on different approaches!! That grabby tool was absolutely essential! Thanks for watching!
I thought this was going to be a really hard job but it seemed easier than it looked, and we didn’t get the trademark Meg exasperated “Nooooo” so things didn’t seem as frustrating as in some other vids. You looked really happy and proud of yourself at the end which was nice to see, ☺️. Roll on next week.
Patients is a virtue, and you got it goln on. Rust is not your friend and I guess that salt in Canada is the go to for snowy roads. Please tell us what you have in mind for slighty rusty frames and underbody.I think tranny fluid or used oil is your best bet for the money.
Patience is definitely a skill that will be a life long journey mastering! And yes, we do get a lot of rust up here!! Thankfully all this rust under my truck is surface rust, so once the weather warms up in a few weeks, I'll be doing a big transformation on it!! I'm excited to share that with you soon!
ok, Ill man up, i started watching because of the outfits. But you are so effing good. I hope theres no guys in the background helping you. Perfect example for those girls that whinge and cry that its too heavy, its too hard. Keep it up Meg.
Another awesome vid meg! As always the best part of saturday morning. Keep em coming! Just a heads up, every wire you probed or cut in there is subject to corrosion now. No biggie, just remember in 3 or 4 years when something stops working to start looking there. Stay awesome and see ya on the next one!
Thank you so much @mrpbright! I'm so happy to hear that! And thanks for the heads up on the wiring probe spots 😊👍 Hope you have an amazing week ahead, see you soon!
Great job, Meg! That was a little touch and go with getting the new tailgate lock to work, but you did it! In addition to the Ford Truck forums, Haynes Manuals are another good resource. Especially for wiring diagrams.
Hi Meg August this is John I'm from Wichita Kansas just started watching the show and I'm watching this is is the tailgate and the Pop-A-Lock and watering it all up I mean you made me think I can do better
Congratulations! Consider a tailgate opening shock assist like one made from DeeZee. Helps to take the weight of the tailgate for a smooth effort free opening. Easy install for an unafraid skilled mechanic like you.
Get a flush cut cutter for the zip ties (zap strap). Those side cutters will leave a sharp point and a possibility of slicing your arms or hands.I think your Princess Auto (our Harbor Freight) sells them.
I'm here to see how many told you to do wire connections with solder and heat shrink or crimp connectors and heat shrink. The Scotch lock connectors are a failure waiting to happen.
Interesting. Develop good habits by wearing gloves. What is the meaning of the colour coated wires and cables? Does red men 🔥 hot? Thanks in advance and helping us save money by not going to the garage without first trying to innovate and solve the problem ourselves.

whats that long pick up tool? Can it found in ebay?
I'm not sure about ebay but I think this one was from Princess Auto! It looks like amazon has something similar and they call it a mechanic grab tool or a grabber claw pick up tool. Honestly, SO worth having one.
A very Happy Birthday Meg, u did-it! not only did u fix the tailgate to open better, Butt u got the wring right this time. lock/unlock congrats Meg, i thew u could do-it.
Oh no those are the absolute worst connector you could ever use. I would not pay a dollar for 100,000 of those. They almost cut your original wire half
I love watching this channel and seeing what challenge Meg is going to overcome this week. As per usual you talk yourself through each obstacle taking a step-by-step approach until everything comes together. Although I doubt I will be doing any of the repairs you've shared I will be replicating your common sense approach as it relates to trouble shooting. The patients you demonstrate is nothing short of remarkable. Thanks for sharing and I we will see you next week. Congrats on the tailgate BTW
That's so great to hear, thank you Rob! I'm really grateful to have this opportunity to share what I'm working on, and this community has been so supportive on my journey of learning how to learn. It's really amazing to hear that I'm also able to inspire others while learning it for myself as well! 😊 Have a great week and see you soon!
