It vibrates and it feels stiff? That's because the test bike is brand new - they take a good 500 miles to run in and loosen up. Yes, RE bikes are traditional, they need to be run in. They have to be run in. First 300 miles = top speed 35 to 40mph (or you will kill the engine). Once they're run in they loosen up and produce a lot more power, and stop vibrating. The power is all low down so there's no point revving it. It uses torque, very wide power band. And if you put 18psi in the front like the RE book of words says it is going to handle funny, won't turn in to corners - you want about 27psi like the tyre manufacturer says. Handling best described as stable and forgiving.

Regarding Royal Enfields, they have a break in period of roughly 1500 to 2500 miles. You are supposed to ride below 60 mph for at least the first 500 to 800 miles. (Otherwise their engines will vibrate you to hell if you do not break the bike in properly) Once broken in, they will ride smooth and true between 70 and 80 miles per hour, though, it is happiest (once broken in) at roughly 55 to 65 miles per hour. Furthermore, the RE company has been around far longer than the 1950's. It was sold to the Indian manufacturers in the 50's after going bust in the U.K. The brand is in fact older than Harley-Davidson by one year. The sr400 seems like a great base with lots of customization options. However, like the RE, its way overpriced.

Royal Enfield in the UK didn't fold until 1969-1970 ( can't remember exactly which year). Royal Enfield started being built in India as part of a contract with the Indian Army. It is indeed an historic company and I'm pleased to see the present owners haven't forgotten it's British heritage.

Dev Kulkarni $7700ish (including tax and stealership fees for classic EFI) in Canada means there is more than import charges at play here. Dealership are being greedy, not least of all when they are so few and far between. I could import one for less from India. (and just might eventually) ;-)

I have a 2013 Royal Enfield. But mine is a B5 model, not the CGT tested. From a quality standpoint, this bike is about as bad as it gets, unless you go Chinese. I am a mechanic, and I have redone some of the crappy stuff on it, but it has plenty more. I replaced the EFI with an Amal carb, using a kit from a UK supplier of Royal Enfield parts, and the huge 40 pound catalytic converter exhaust with a much smaller, lighter non catalytic '60s style Triumph "peashooter" muffler, which is quite a bit louder. Between the louder exhaust and the cone air filter that came with the carb kit, this bike now has a lot of character. You can hear the loud "chuf chuf chuf" sound as it inhales through the filter. Just like a "real" British bike from the '50s/'60s. It is an awesome ride, at about 55 mph it comes into it's own, the sound is perfect, the low frequency vibration is perfect, it's kind of a motorcycling nirvana. And that's why I bought it and modified it. It is also beautiful compared to modern styled bikes. BUT. That's as far as it goes. It is not daily transportation, it is not safe on the freeway, and it is prone to breaking down. I won't ride it more than 135 miles from home, the towing limit of my roadside assistance plan. Get one of these only as a toy, and be ready to get your hands dirty.

You can't help describing a RE as having character. Not always a bad thing.
@ethan999oz
@ethan999oz 9 лет назад
Ok, I'm not saying its anywhere near a perfect machine but, you have to be a real motorcycle enthusiast to appreciate REs. When you are on one, its more about the journey than about the ride itself. Its just not for everyone. I'm sure people who have been spoiled by the smooth revving inlines would find these retro machines to be quite underwhelming. But then again its not about quarter miles, track days or or aerodynamics. Its about the experience of it all. Riding around on it all day and taking in the sights and enjoying every moment, instead of just speeding past them.

No, you're wrong. When European or Japanese companies make a bike styled like the 70s that vibrates, *but not uncomfortably*, it has character. If a new sports bike vibrated a lot, it'd be called junk. If *any* bike vibrates uncomfortably, it's junk.

Is it for real that custom exhaust give a 2-3BHP more..or its only in the feel? Someone please educate..also does the custom exhaust by the RE itself reduce the mentioned mileage
@atarian345

Only if you upgrade to an high performance air filter and re-map the EFI. Otherwise it's just going to help the engine breath but not improve horsepower. Keep in mind though that aftermarket exhausts will make the bike louder.

The Royal enfield is a good bike for what it is! The design is 50 years old and has not changed much and that's the appeal. Is it rough around the edges? Yes it is, will the engine leak? Yes it will, is it stiff yes it is. Is it severely underpowered? yes. Is it still a beautiful machine? Yes! If you want a sophisticated piece of engineering then get a Ducati or MV Augusta. Want something classic, go for the enfield. This is a perfect beginner bike, my girlfriend brought this to learn on and then after a year went on to a bigger bike. Great second bike when your primary rider is in service
@tngchinghwa
@tngchinghwa 8 лет назад
+Andrew Rai the engine will leak? wtf.... i don't think classic is synonymous with unreliable
@andrewrai5752
@andrewrai5752 8 лет назад
+Tony Tng I have a lot of Friends who have enfields, and I used to have one, oil leaks are the biggest problem
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 8 лет назад
+Andrew Rai - my Redditch 350 leaked like a sieve but my EFI hasn't lost a drop. On the old bikes the primary chain case is held on with one bolt so when you pull it onto the centre stand the cases flex and it leaks. Despite that, those old bike are still puttering around all over India. The EFI is a re-design of the UCE, many bolts keep things tight. The electrics on italian bikes don't exactly have a good reputation, they don't seem to believe in water proofing nor operating switches with thick gloves on. You need the right gear to ride a Ducati or MV - brown trousers. After an exhilarating ride on a fast sports bike you come back with a lasting impression of lots of black tarmac and white lines with no real idea where you've been.

It's a 3k bike in India and 6k in USA. So you guys might be reviewing the bike as per that price tag. But just for information, Royal Enfield is known for their assurance of a robust feel in every motorcycle they roll out. It's an Indian cult that explains the madness for RE engines, sound, and the hardcore feeling you get when you ride one. The bike improvises overtime.
@carlosandleon
@carlosandleon 7 лет назад
Devang Vagh royal enfield should improve on that. sounds like indians just blindly follow and support the brand but criticism must be spoken out for the brand to improve. 29 hp out of a 535cc machine is ridiculously low and should get checked. i don't mind the roughness of it. but re should really start looking into their engines.

If you might know there are RE Bullets that were made in 80s with iron alloy engines. Those bikes were damn heavy and powerful. They were designed to be also used in military and hilly areas. Those models were responsible for the famous cult. Later on RE revised the models with light weight components.

New riders don't need nor should need to deal with "character". On the other hand it does make me personally appreciate good product bikes *couph, like mine. Did anybody else notice the overuse of the word "like" by the 3 presenters. These guys do a great job reviewing the bikes, but every time the say "like" (which is almost constantly) when they're about to explain something, it really detracts from their confidence in what they're saying. Apart from that, great review. By the way, I own a TU250 ;)

They'll need to be less greedy with the profits and make better quality for less money!

It's the dealers and the import taxes and stuffs and not the manufactureres I guess. Because in my country it cost less than half of that.

Instead of choosing Gt, you guys should have opted for the Bullet 500 or Classic 500 from royal enfield. they are much better. ps. Enfields are know for their sound and vibration and stiff riding quality.

modern enfields are not what they used to be ... new ones will probably fall apart if you kick it hard enough

Sorry if I heard you wrong..... But hey, the RE bike is crap to the EU/US market, and as you said, Yamaha's SR....WAYYYY better. Price point too is better!

Blame custom duties. Bike is really cheap in India retailing around $3000 + taxes. P.S. Royal Enfield is royal. Built like a bullet, ride like a tank. 535cc engines of RE are one of the biggest single cylinder engines in production, closest competition is KTM duke 690 but that's a whole different bike.

I wonder what they think of the new 650's and you want to see a bike vibrate ride an old H.D. pan head , children these days

This is supposed a motorcyclist channel. Why does the rider have that flannel shirt flapping at the rear tire? If it gets caught on the rear wheel, it will make for a very and very sad cautionary tale.

+lomate lomatey - see Dynojet. Can get some 25% more grunt out of the EFI. About 34bhp and 55Nm. Or to put that into perspective same horses as a Velocette Venom and similar torque to a Guzzi V7. It makes a difference. No fire breathing monster but smoother power delivery, even more tractable, wide power band and more fun to ride. The latter being most important.
