( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is a popular mid-sized truck. Often people buy mid-sized trucks to because they get better fuel economy than half ton trucks. In this TFLtruck video we test the 2015 Toyota Tacoma to find out if the EPA highway MPG is the same in real world testing as stated on the truck's sticker.

24.5mpg in the largest 4WD configuration is pretty damn impressive. I'd imagine having the shortbed with a tonneau cover, TRD exhaust, and cold air intake, a Tacoma could get close to 30 highway. I'd love to see how a 2016 will do with those add-ons, as well.

You need to use the same exact pump for fill up to gauge the amount of fuel used, different pumps can vary up to 3/4 gallon before the vapor pressure trips the pump.

Good job Andre. I think you should do more of these tests on other popular vehicles as well. Also I like that the test is done at 65 MPH. I have personally noticed in most vehicles I have driven, there is a substantial drop in mileage after 65 MPH

I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma v6 4x4 and the best mileage I can get on the highway is 16.2! It is stock in every way, and has only 15,000 miles on it because it costs too much to keep putting gas in it. I drive carefully on the the highways, and a lot of it is in cruise control. The Toyota dealer says that mileage is normal. What gives!

Great work, Andre. You're getting a hang of this presenting thing. I haven't seen the Ike Gauntlet with the Tacoma, so l'll have to look it up. As far as suggestions, it would be nice to get a ride and comfort review to later compare with the new generation. Maybe with 5 people to see how comfortably it would carry a group or family. So many people are using trucks for family vehicles these days, and a lot of the competitors have rides almost like cars at this point. It would be nice to have some idea of how the Tacoma compares.

Another great review Andre!!!!!. Keep them coming. Even if I'll never own the truck that he's reviewing. They are still great reviews. I've got a 2012 Tacoma double cab, 4x4, 4.0L, 5 speed auto, and l can get 21+mpg. But l usually get 16 as l live in Costa Rica, and l have steep hills where l live. But l love the truck. This truck does everything that l have ever asked of it.

I was close to buying a Tacoma but ended up getting a Silverado. The funny part is I got 24.7 MPG's driving 65mph on I-95 towards Boston. Cylinder de-activation makes a V8 competitive with a V6 when talking about highway MPG's. I was very surprised. I'm sure the Tacoma does better in the city though.

I own a 2006 Tacoma Prerunner w the 4.0/6 speed, and I don't think I can exceed 20 mpg on the highway, even going 65. The 4.0 engines were changed, I think in 2012, to be more fuel efficient , with slightly less torque and HP, so the 2012-15 Tacomas get better mpg.

I have a Tacoma, and I love it, but I have never had that good of mileage other than coming down from Tahoe to the bay. I have an aftermarket reader for instant feedback reader. I tend to drive fast, I usually only average about 15-16 with both city and highway. Long trips on highway at 75-80 about 19. That is the one thing you have to say about Toyota. They always exceed the mileage of the EPA if you drive like a normal person.

I like the test but you have to do a full tank for an accurate measure. 1 or 2 gallons of gas just isn't a large enough sample size. I don't think you would have kept 24.5MPG if you continued for another 300 miles.

+chinchilla4320 Incorrect. 4:49: "43.6 miles, 1.779 gallons." He only drove a short distance and not a whole tank. It's simply a tiny sample size and therefore not a real test no matter how fast he drove.

No disrespect, but your test is severely flawed.. Your results are inaccurate because you can't accurately measure the amount of fuel you used over a short distance.. Your results are based on the pumps auto shutoff detector.. If you had put in 2 gal instead, you would have got about 21mpg.. 2 tenths of a gal is a common error for all station fuel pumps.. Do the same test over 300 miles and the pump error becomes insignificant and your accuracy goes up dramatically..
@marks6072
@marks6072 9 лет назад
Nick Nobles sorry, I didn't realize that you personally verified the gas stations pump dispensing system cutoff pressure.. News flash.. Output varies with fuel temp, delivery pressure, and vehicle filler neck shape and routing bends.. That's why you need to burn at least a half tank of fuel to discount those variables... Did you just get your drivers license?
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 9 лет назад
Came to say the same. if this was a statistics assignment, you would fail.
@unitedgray
@unitedgray 9 лет назад
Mark S By using the same exact pump, they did limit as much of the error as they could. And yes, there is absolutely a deviation in how much a pump puts out, but you can rest assured that the gas station is not giving away free gas. By that I mean that should the pump be inaccurate, the actual out put will be less than what is displayed by the pump. Meaning the error results in fewer gallons being output and an increase in perceived fuel economy.
@iowawrench
@iowawrench 9 лет назад
Mark S you are spot on. This test was not accurate. I'm kinda surprised The Fast Lane Truck doesn't have anyone smart enough on staff to know this.
@Saki630
@Saki630 9 лет назад
Mark S That would require a flow meter inline which they probably dont want to do on a truck they don't own. Also they could remove the fuel tank to an external source which would require rerouting some tubing. The only way I can see to do this test without modifying the vehicle, since its not theirs to cut and remove pieces with, is to use a a sensitive scale to weight the vehicle before and after. I'm sure this is why the EPA rates it off of fuel emissions in a controlled environment so they can calculate exact numbers.

Andre, the EPA has added new tests beginning in 2008 to calculate a number closer to real world estimates. For the highway test, they now have an additional high speed test that goes up to 80mph with heavy acceleration (acceleration that is more than twice as fast as the regular city and highway tests) and also includes idling time. They also have another test where they run the car up to 54mph with the A/C and include 19% idling time. All of these tests are then used to calculate the city and highway mileage. The method of testing you guys are doing in these videos is closer to how the EPA use to test highway mileage before 2008, so it is no surprise if you are able to match or even beat EPA estimates today. In fact, if a vehicle is unable to at least match the rated highway mileage under the same conditions I would be very suspicious of the claimed EPA mileage (of course as long as the vehicle is in good working condition). This is how Kia and Hyundai got caught lying about their EPA figures. It would also be nice to make a quick video explaining how the EPA testing process works. A lot of people don't realize that the EPA only tests a small percentage of vehicles each year. The EPA leaves it up to the car manufacturers to do the EPA testing and really only check to make sure the manufacturers aren't lying about their EPA figures once there are a lot of complaints from owners, which is what happened with Kia/Hyundai. PS - Andre, you should do more segments yourself. Its good to see you in front of the camera.

(Edit) If you are calculating your F/econ manually, you need to have more burned off on a tank to reduce the margin of error caused by not refilling the tank exactly the same way twice. Less than two gallons down is a HUGE margin of error. I can not accept your 24.5mpg on this test.

I agree with you to a point of how they are testing it. Pumps never shut off the same point. I have a 08 4x4 Crewcab Tacoma, and it varies from shut off points between 1 - 1.5 gallon to shut off. I usually can get another 2.5-4 gallons in by feathering it in. That is a huge difference. I have been into 23s mpg in the high desert in CA while going about 65-70 for over 100 miles on off major interstates. This is using my ScanGuage which is really accurate. On I-5 going 80-85 I am only at 18. Best mileage I got was coming down from Tahoe to San Francisco. It was 28 and I know that was going down hill, but I was very driving fast.

My 07 Tacoma TRD Off-Road double cab, short bed, with factory 3:73 gears gets 17-19 MPG in mixed driving, will drop to 16-17 on the interstate running 75 MPH, and the best tank ever was 20 MPH.

They do that because they intend to do future testing while trailering. 65 is the max in CO and several other states while towing. In order to have an apples to apples test verses unloaded they have to do the unloaded test at the same speed.

You should also do a city test to compare as well

It's impossible to do a good city run. Because there's lights, wrecks, heavy traffic, lots of acceleration followed with braking

RedTeamWolf That would be city driving
@Dinty51

scrimmy6969 It would be extremely hard to get a repeatable test in the city because of what RedTeamWolf said above. Too many variables, and variables are bad in testing.

Dinsdale Drummond I understand that. But all I was saying was that is city driving. Stop and go traffic, accidents, school buses, etc.

Yes exactly. Everybody, including TFLcar, knows what city driving is. That's exactly why it wouldn't be easy to test in the city. They even explained it in the video.
