www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is going away soon but before the truck drives into the sunset we wanted to see how it tows. Why? So that we have a baseline for the new 2016 Toyota Tacoma. In another Grueling Ike Gauntlet Towing Test, Kent and Roman find out how well the 2015 Toyota Tacoma goes up the hill.
The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.

I just ran the Ike Gauntlet with my 2011 Toyota Tacoma with 160k miles towing a 4500 lb loaded U-haul trailer. I had to weigh because of the Army moving me from Washington state to Colorado. I was at 9700 lbs fully loaded truck and trailer. I stopped in Siverthorne, CO for gas so I ran the Ike and held about 57 MPH the whole way. I did not time but I would say that the time was about 8:30. I was pretty impressed being able to hold the speed and still passing every semi truck and slow cars up the mountain.

Funny that Roman says truck is outdated because it feels like a truck. I may be in the minority, but I'm tired of trucks built like cars. I hope there is a swing back to rugged and durable in the future.

I'm with you. a truck should feel like a truck, manual? should shift like a truck. these yuppies cry about a truck that doesn't feel like a car, then buy a Lincoln truck.
@wildbill23c

+Blake Freeman I too am tired of the manufacturers building trucks to ride like cars...then people wonder why they can't tow or haul worth a damn. They started by cutting out the solid front axles in trucks and going to the garbage independent front suspension then came the softer springs, weaker metal, etc.

thanks guys for doing this review. I love my '13 Taco TRD. She hauls a 5000lb 24' travel trailer (loaded) and my family in the pacific northwest mountains like a boss! If I wanted a car I'd drive a Colorado. I love this truck because it's truck! Plain and simple. It's hill decent control automatically shifts down based on angle of grade and braking amount which is SUPER handy when towing. To those slamming it....don't like it? Don't buy it. At least mine will still be worth money with 100k on it and years old. These things hold their value like no other.

“The Toyota Tacoma wins a Vincentric Best Value in America award for the 11th year in a row supported by the lowest total cost of ownership, lowest maintenance costs, and the highest resale value in its class.” Not only is it the best resale in its segment it holds the best re-sale period over all vehicles. And that's the old model that beats out the Colorado not the new 2016, said to be even better.

Great job on the test guys. One thing I can't get over is how these trucks get labeled as feeling old. As I hop into my 2000 silverado with 200k miles on it, I think about how old it feels. When I look at the interiors and everything on these trucks, it's luxurious. Having power windows and locks would be more modern than what I have! I'm actually looking to get a Tacoma soon, so thanks for the video showing it's capabilities.

I love my 2006 Tacoma. It can’t haul my single axle pointed nose enclosed trailer with my 750lb ATV inside... not without constantly shifting between forth and fifth. 266 lb/ ft of torque won’t cut it. My truck sounds like this when pulling my Yamaha Grizzly in my enclosed trailer on FLAT ground 😂. However I LOVE my Tacoma. Absolutely love it. As a small truck to take hunting, haul small loads, or the occasional big load you can’t beat it. Mine has 440,000km ( about 300,000 miles ). It rides rough, but handles well. Drivetrain is bulletproof. It looks 10X better than any other truck of that model year. I still get looks in 2020 driving mine.

No locking differential because... You opted for a sport model with an automatic limited slip... No automatic climate control because... Honestly, it's a truck; people do not go purchase one of these with that in mind... It feels "trucky" because... Well it is a truck! You said the Colorado feels more like a car, so is that what trucks should be now? No tow/haul mode... You said it yourself that it's a life style truck and not a 1/2 ton work truck, no one buys a Tacoma with the idea of towing 6k pounds up a mountain... You point out all of these flaws but the Tacoma still leads in sales even over the beloved rebadged Isuzu D-Max from GM... This is a useless test; I may be biased as I own a 99 and my father owns an 08, but these trucks are more built for the weekend warrior or for the adventurer rather than to haul and do work. You are expecting it to do and be what a compact truck is not interested for. I am not arguing Tacoma is the better truck, anything new is going to be good, more so arguing your views on what this type of truck should be. If you want trailer brakes, go get a Tundra or some 1500 truck.

This is an extreme test as they said. The are almost at maximum towing capacity and maximum gvw. Sure most people aren't going to load it up like they did but there is someone who will because the truck is rated to haul that much weight. When they said it feels old and trucky they are comparing it to its competitors which, aside from the frontier, are on new platforms and have more capabilities and also ride and handle better. They said its a solid truck just long in the tooth as this truck has been essentially the same since 2005

I towed a 7×16 v-nose trailer loaded up with furniture cross country with my Tacoma and it did ok. If I didn't have some mattresses up on racks as a wind block it would be easier to gauge, but headwinds really hurt. I have the 6 speed manual, so I know what gear I was in. I could do every hill east of the Mississippi in 4th, usually 5th. In the western interstate hills it's 4th, 3rd if there was headwind and Im under the speed limit. I did see 2nd gear once In Idaho i couldn't do 80mph because we had a 40mph headwind, but I did have that big windblock. The Tacoma has limits, but it punches above its weight.

Interesting video, good to see its capabilities. I was confused when he said the truck didn’t have a locking rear diff because multiple shots show this is a TRD Off Road… but it has color a matched grille, bumper, and hood scoop … indicative of a TRD sport. Probably a slapped on TRD Off Road sticker and actually a Sport

I've been waiting for this test with the Tacoma for a long time and I'm glad to see it handles this hill. It would have been nice to see what the decibels were, it did sound like it was pretty loud and I can confirm that because I have this truck and when you slam on the gas it is pretty dang loud. One thing though, everytime I see a review of a Tacoma they talk about how old the infotainment center is. Granted I haven't used one in any other vehicle but I think Toyota's is great. It's very snappy, no lag, syncs with my phone so bluetooth works great, I've used the navigation several times and it's never steered me wrong. Sending and recieving texts and making and recieving phone calls works great and sounds good through the speakers. I'm not really sure what people are looking for in an infotainment center if this is supposedly outdated. Heck it even has a CD player when most vehicles don't include one anymore. It's extremely easy to navigate and has all of the main bells and whisles that other one's have that I've seen in reviews so I'm not really sure why it's considered old.
@budcargeorge
@budcargeorge 9 лет назад
I agree my 2015 is very up to date with everything, phone hooks up great, call and play my music from the phone and everything is right there and simple to use. Decibels would have been at 70-74 at full rpm, in comparison because the Colorado revs to 6800rpm, it is at 80.1 decibels in the cab. Read it on another review.

Couldn't agree more! Too much fluff about the "new version" and "midsize limitations". I'm a previous test pilot and currently fly a Boeing 767 freighter. Weight and balance/cg/payloads/ relates to takeoff/climb/cruise/landing/braking capability is my operational knowledge and focus. Timing isn't an accurate "enough" measure. Aerodynamics matter, head/tail wind matters, as you guys climb in altitude the dynamic pressure changes as well as density altitude, as it relates to a gas engine performance, matters considerably. It's nice but unless you can immulate exacting conditions up and down that test track, your not quite in a direct comparison between trucks. I own a 2009 DB cab, long bed TRD sport and I feel like quite a few of the operational and performance capabilities of this truck were left out realistically. Right seater approached this truck test with a pre-bias and it was very apparent. No offense but the conjecture was a bit heavy. Right seat talked more than the driver which to me invalidated this test a bit. Operational knowledge was valuable from the driver which I wish spoked more in comparison to the other models tested.

Tacoma is an awesome mid sized truck. I own a 2006. It has done everything I've asked of it. It tows my 4600 pound boat with ease and it's only a 2wd. It gets my boat off the steepest, slickest boat ramps. For the weekend tower/ hauler, this truck is hard to beat. With that said, I'm up grading to a full sized truck because I am towing and hauling more weight and doing it more often these days. I need beefier brakes and more power... Tacoma does not have a tow/haul mode or trailer brakes. My Tacoma has been without any issues the entire time I've owned the truck. It now has 144K miles on it...and I'm sure the new owner (my friend) will put another 200K miles on it.

It is the central reason we buy them--they are solid, sturdy, reliable, not hyper-techy and, in winter time bad weather, the 4W high is great for two lane country roads. Get yourself a set of all terrains and you are set.

lol "this is an excellent drop in bed liner, it protects your metal".... It's a plastic bed and has been since 2005. It doesn't have a locker because it's a TRD Sport with an Off Road sticker (hood scoop, color matched grill and bumpers, long-bed and the wheels give it away). I also know you guys don't manually shift but if you use tow modes on other trucks you should have honored the manual (not that it mattered because you were in 3rd most of the time) and left it in 4th as the max gear. It doesn't have a tow mode but it explicitly states to only tow in "4" as a maximum gear. Please consider doing these tests in a more standard way in the future. You have a decibel reading in most reviews and this Tacoma in particular sounds really loud. I'd also really like to see this tested against its peers with the same weight and trailer (aerodynamics matter... and the Frontier was tested with a boat).

I don't get what your problem is with the bed liner. It may be plastic but it's durable and the fact that it's been around for 10 years proves it. It also has better impact strength than steel.

Its a plastic/metal composite bedliner, saves weight and passes all the durability tests.

Michael Larivey I actually own a Tacoma, my problem isn't with the bedliner, it's with the fact that these guys are so uninformed that it's been plastic for TEN years and they haven't managed to notice lol

4.0 by putting out 236 hp and 266 torque. Same exact engine outside out 280 hp in the 2015 4runner. Hows that possible.

He’s in a truck and says it feels “trucky”. I have this exact truck, including color but mine is a 2014. I have to say as soon as I got it and even to this day, I miss my old 2001 manual transmission Tacoma. I hate the way this thing shifts. But I don’t think I’d ever own a truck other than a Tacoma. My 2001 that I put 310k miles on made me a lover of Tacoma’s.

It really does feel trucky tbh. My 21 f350 dually flatbed with lumber racks rides way smoother than my 13 taco. Not saying I don't love the taco but she is a rough/uncomfortable rider.

Good God 5,000 rpms constantly, I’d hate to own that truck after that.

Would love if the tacoma came with more engine options such as the 4.7 V8 or the D-4D diesel.

I’m getting uninterested in buying used now that many tow heavy trailers often Any trick in deciphering from looking how much towing has been done with it?

I don’t really know the technical terms to use but I might be able to help. I bought my 2012 SR5 with 119,000 miles a few years back. The whole truck felt extremely responsive with any input I might with the pedals. A few years later, my dad and I went to test drive another 2012 Tacoma and the dealer had mentioned it was used to tow heavy loads. When my dad was driving it, he said it felt off and didn’t feel like my truck. So I hopped in the drivers seat and I immediately could tell the difference. The engine was extremely unresponsive and lacked the immediate punch my truck has when I need to get going and such. I towed a small U-haul trailer from FL to ND and had to do that trip again a few months later with the same designed U-haul. Even after that trip my truck still feels extremely responsive and like the day I bought it. Not sure if that helped, but I’d say if the truck doesn’t feel very nice and responsive then it was probably used and abused towing heavy loads often.

What kind of mislabeling is that? The bed says it's an off road. But it has the hood scoop and no rear locking diff! That makes no sense.

the hood scoop is functional when you get the TRD supercharger. its not a "fake scoop"

But 98 percent of those scoops are non functional. Let's be real.

What an awesome looking TRUCK. Now do it with the TRD supercharger factory installed with factory warranty. If they are willing to warranty it with 373 gears and 334LB-ft of torque with a supercharger producing all that under 304HP with a super responsive gas pedal tip in then the stock one must be bullet proof as proven for the past ten years.
