I'm showing why dragon fruit is the most exciting thing I have growing in my garden. We had 8 flowers on the day of videoing plus more the following day. We harvested 29 fruit that day. So it's pretty exciting.
Wonderful harvest again. The red ones look very good. White reminds me of chocolate chip ice cream. lol I may buy a cutting to plant in my tiny greenhouse.
Love Pitahayas, they´re delicious!. Pitahaya-producing cacti of the genus Hylocereus are originally native to Mexico. They were transplanted to Central America and then to other parts of the world.
jeff and wilma, i just wanted to thank you for all your videos. My husband and in our late 20s and you have inspired us to create two vege patches and get a european bee hive. We currently have two native bee hives. We absolutely love your videos and we both got excited when we realised you had uploaded a new one! thank you
Oh Jeff and Wilma! I could watch the bees in those flowers all day. Both those bees had loads of pollen on their legs. Did you do a video on how to propagate your dragon fruit plants? I wonder if I have the right climate for growing them here in south Texas? It's pretty hot and dry during the summer. Also a bee question, I've not seen you collect bee pollen, do you?
+Mega MindyLou Hi MindyLou, we did a video on planting dragon fruit. I reckon it would grow well in S. Texas. I have an old rotten pollen trap I used to use. I sold a bit to the odd customer that wanted it. Plus I used a bit of it on my cereal. I haven't used it for a long time. If it rains, the pollen goes mildewey, plus you'll get a period without much pollen. In that case you get a lot of mainly bee legs & wings. Also I just remembered, the beetle lay eggs in the pollen, so you'd have to harvest it on a daily basis.
Dragon fruit is so good that it's hard not to eat the entire half alone. I have eaten the white flesh dragon fruit but I never knew there was a red one. Thanks for the info, I'll have try it.
+costaskaloidas Hi Costas, probably 10+ hours. My red one that is in a lot of shade hasn't produced much this year. It looks like, the more sunlight, the better.
Hello Jeff thank you for the video. I really wish to get a cutting cause I live in Tunisia and this wonderful plant isn't common. I love this plant and want to grow it. Can you send me a cutting Thanks
Hi Jeff and Wilma, what do you do with all that dragon fruit? You surely can't eat it all. Do you sell it at farmer's markets or local restaurants? Or do you preserve it somehow?
+artistmama1 Hi A-mama, we're working on eating it all, one a day. One thing about it, it keeps well in the fridge for 3 weeks. I might slice some up & freeze it, that works well. Then we'll be able to use it later on in the year. It's really nice eaten while still half frozen.
Dear Jeff, ,I am juvy smith. I like t plant like your dragon fruits. ,if it's possible, please tell me where can I get some plant seeds like that. Thank you.. juvy.
I live in California and I have not heard of dragon fruit but what a wonderful plant. It reminds me of a larger scale of the zygo cactus which sometimes people call Christmas cactus or Easter cactus. I'm just really excited for you it makes me envious a little bit I shouldn't be but I loved us grow plants also
Those dragon fruit look absolutely delicious. We have had a dragon fruit plant in our backyard for years, it's flowered a fair few times, but it wasn't until last year we got fruit from it. There really is no comparing the sweetness you get from them when you eat them fresh straight from the plant compared to the ones you buy.
Jeff and Wilma, how do you know when they are ripe? I have a young plant with its first single fruit on it. Thanks to Yandina Markets. Do the birds like them as I heard a few in your video?
+Kev Barry Hi Kev, great to hear from you. No, I'm pretty lucky so far nothing has touched them. The lady next door got one fruit last year & she said a possum ate it. A good rule of thumb I think, when to pick is: 4 days after they get their colour. They'll keep for 3 weeks in the fridge.
Hi Jeff, I really need to get some of these growing. I had some at another place I lived and saw them all through the Philippines growing on trellis. Love this vids mate,,,good to see some Aussies creating videos. Happy Gardening Marty Ware ps: Subbed and happy to see more coming!
Hey Jeff, Greetings from Israel. very nice video and a beautiful garden! thank you for sharing your experience!. may i ask, how frequently do you get this amount of fruits out of this trees.
HI JEFF and WILMA. I WAS JUST THINKING IF YOU WOULD BE KIND ENOUGH TO TELL ME IF YOU KNOW ANY REASONS TO WHY DRAGON FRUIT VINES WRINKEL AND OR CURL. WOULD APPRICIATE IT VERY MUCH THANK YOU BOTH. GOD BLESS!!
+atmm89 Hi, all I can suggest is trying to hand pollinate them at night. If that fails, I'd try a different source of plants & try again. Actually I'd probably try & get different plants from a proven bush. If your passing by me sometime, I have heaps of free cuttings from my proven plants.
HI Jeff and Wilma, I ejoy watching your videos.I 've planted a few cutting my self Augast 2015 .It's been 6 months now since then ,but they do'nt seem to grow very fast. I am wondering if you could give me a few tip on when and how to fertilize with NPK (CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS).cause here where i live we do'nt have cow compose or blood and bone .Would realy appriciate it .THANK YOU ,God Bless and happy garedening. Love James and wife .
+James Billy Hi James, I would give it a good area with mulch, say 1-2 sq. meters. I'd use a good all purpose fertilizer. Keep the mulch moist. Give it plenty of sun. I always have banana stalks rotting down near the dragon fruit plants. I think that helps. Good luck, cheers:)
+Jeff Heriot Thank you very much for your advice, I think you should know that I'm growing DF in southern Crete ,and as far as i know Im proberbly the only one here to grow these the proper way if not the only DF grower on the Island. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!!!!!
Hi & thanks:) some people say they are like a kiwi fruit. I think they are a little like kiwi & water melon with little crunchy seeds. Very luxurious with ginger syrup & honey.
Please mail to me one piece of the red dragon fruit . And tell how much I will pay for you later, I promise . Because I love to plant this stuffs. Also I plant a lot white flesh dragon fruit. Thank you so much.
