Had my first yellow from Whole Foods a couple days ago... blew me away. 9/10 for a fruit where the red/white are only a 4 or 5 out of 10. Just amazing, like the sweetest juiciest kiwi you can imagine

For most of us they are a love at first bite. It was that way for me. I was standing in the midst of a friends red skin white flesh dragon fruit farm one day. The fruit was vine ripe and as good as it can get. I complained to the farmer that even field ripe they fruit still left a lot to be desired. He said let me show you daddy's special stash. We went to the back row and found two yellow dragon fruit plants. On sampling it because my favorite and the source of the seeds i used for my own crop.

Everything Bill recommends I am compelled to acquire. Even though my cereus cactus fruits aren't good enough to fight the birds for, I finally did find a finger sized yellow dragon fruit plant. It hasn't grown much over the winter but I watch it diligently and can't wait to taste one someday.

+amantedelenguaje2 As a young man I decided I wanted to do good things with my life and leave the world better than I found it. I used to preach about better ways of living, it just turned people off and made them angry. As I got older I discovered if you want to encourage people to find a better life you need to make them envious. Jealousy is far more effective for persuasion than moralizing. Glad to hear you were moved by the video and yes, I wasn't faking the pleasure, it was real.

How would your redesign the trellis? I want to create one with bamboo, but it seems like this plant will get really heavy.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 лет назад
You aren't kidding they get heavy, especially when they load with fruit. The best system I have found is the one I call Dragon trees. Remember to allow the fruiting branches to dangle in space. Unless they hang they will not build up enough carbohydrate for flowering. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z5nYyBCXC4E.html

@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 6 лет назад
The soil here is fine for apples the climate is not. Apples are a temperate crop, Hawaii is a tropical environment. The apple requires winter chill and Hawaii has none unless you climb up the volcanoes where it snows. Most apples require constant chilling below 42 for between 250 and 1000 hours. We get zero hours below 42 here. I grow a couple of low chill apples from the Bahama's and Israel but even these need around 200 hours. Mine make fruit but get confused and sometimes make two crops a year but both are light. The fact that they grow at all is a wonder.

I do all the music on the channel. I do have a play list of tunes on the channel. From wild to mild, folksy to outer space sounds, but mostly centered around the blues. I grew up in Chicago and the blues stuck under my skin. Never fear, over 60 years of handling cacti. Lots of spines in my hands, a couple in my butt but so far nothing worse. We have a truce. I hate working too hard at life. A frown takes more energy than a smile. The universe at large probably laughs at it's self.

The Selenicereus cactus fruit is much better than the more common Hylocereus dragon fruit. The Hylocereus tastes like unripe watermelon to me. The Selenicereus has the sugar it takes to make the fruit memorable. The main reason the Hylocereus is the market standard is because of the large size and lack of thorns. The Selenicereus has to have the thorns removed before shipping. This is an easy task and well worth the effort. Under my local conditions the yellow fruit is much more reliable at production too.

I mail a lot of tropical seeds into Phoenix area and there are people there that think they can grow them. I lived in Phoenix for a couple years in the early 70's and I can vouch for the fact Arizona isn't tropical. the closest place in AZ to a tropical climate is at the Mexican border with Yuma. In Phoenix we get snow from time to time, way too cold for Mamey and Mango. The heat messes with a lot of these plants too. Arizona is a great climate for citrus, pomegranate, dates, grapes, pecans and a number of temperate fruits. I see guys messing with bananas there but you really have to want to suffer for your garden to mess with tropicals in AZ. Good luck with all that. The only spots in the USA where a guy might have a fighting chance with tropical fruit is South Florida, California from LA to San Diego on the coast and Hawaii. Bill

I went to a local H-mart (Asain market) on thursday and lo and behold.. I find yellow dragon fruit!! I was ecstatic when I found it and I bought a bunch. But, it's not like the one you and I have had (yellow with spikes), these had the green tipped leaves on it and I've only ever seen them in pictures. So I was adventurous and bought a bunch to try and it's not AS sweet as the one in this video but, the sweetness is quite spotty, moreso in the center and not closer to the rind, not very sweet like the spikey yellow dragon fruit has but I still think it beats the other 2 red skin dragon fruits in flavor.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
I have a video about the fruit you tried. They are raising them here in Kona. I was unimpressed with the fruit but I am a tough customer to please. As far as I'm concerned all of the Hylocereus undatus types, no matter what color and not worth going back for seconds. Selenicereus has a lot better fruit quality. The only Hylocereus i have warmed up to is the Costa Rican form with the purple flesh. Hylocereus costaricensis. Some of the selections from this fruit are pretty good but don't get the juice on your clothes, it is permanent.

The yellow dragon fruit is one of my favorites too. Most of the 6 best varieties of dragon fruit on my farm were all grown from seeds. These plants have little genetic variation. You are actually lucky if you find an off type in the bunch. If you have a heated greenhouse you will be able to grow the cacti but you will need to do your own pollination if the plant is indoors.

Marta, The Yellow Dragon fruit is one of the earliest to mature and most precocious. I can usually get the plants to fruit in 2.5 years from from seeds and about 18 months from cuttings in Hawaii. Florida would be a longer wait by a bit. It also depends on your skill and technique. In short there is no other cacti I have ever grown that produces faster from a seed. Here in Hawaii it takes me 18 months to harvest the first fruit after planting a 24" rooted cutting. I never prune the cuttings though. I spend the first year training them straight up a 4 foot post so the branches can hang back down. Unless the cacti branches are dangling they don't build up enough carbohydrate to flower.

+GreenGardenGuy1 that's great! Moving to Hawaii sounds wonderful! Better climate for growing more stuff indeed. So does your friend fruit the dragon fruits in the dirt? Or does he utilize container and then store indoors during frost. Thanks again for your time
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 лет назад
I believe Ed has the plant in both conditions. I had Dragon Fruit in the soil in Fremont for years and it can be done. The best spot is an eastern wall of a house with a trellis a few inches from the wall. North walls are too dark, west and south walls are too hot and burn the flesh of the plant. East and south east are perfect. If the roof has a nice overhanging eve to keep warm air trapped in winter all the better. Even here in tropical environments container growing is desirable because it creates good drainage in high rain fall areas. The plant is an epiphytic cactus and grows on trees. Using coconut fiber mat on the posts allows it to root in the air as it does in nature. I feed the posts as well as the soil here in HI. Here is a video of the post system I use. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z5nYyBCXC4E.html

My first yellow dragon fruit budded after 5 years, then it turned yellow and died. You mentioned in one of your videos about Boron. What brand of fertilizer with Boron do you recommend? Also there are comments of Borax? Is it Boron or Borax that will be good for the yellow dragon fruit?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
As far as Boron is concerned, if you have boron deficient soils like we have in Eastern Hawaii then addition of boron will help produce better fruiting. If you live in an arid climate then your soil is loaded with boron and you would not apply any more. I used 20 Mule team Borax right out of the box, it is the cheapest source of boron around. Borax isn't pure boron but it contains enough to do the job. My dragon fruit receive a variety of fertilizers. I use composted chicken manure on the ground. In the coco fiber on the posts I use fish emulsion. A couple times per year I use an organic fertilizer that contains pro-biotics and seaweed. Every so often I use Epsom salts on the plants too. Magnesium is limited in our soils and plants need it for chlorophyll. Five year is a long time to wait for a flower if you have Yellow Dragon Fruit. If you have the red or pink then 5 years or longer is normal.

I've had red an pink. They are good. Never had the yellow. Tried germinating some seeds but nothing happened. Do you surface plant them on damp soil or is there another technique the will improve my results?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 6 лет назад
The yellow is one of the best. The Pink and Red pale by comparison. Even better yet are the crosses between the yellow and the purple fleshed types like Desert king. The seeds need light so if you bury them they generally do not germinate. Since they are left on the surface using saran over the pot will keep in water until germination occurs. The temperature of the soil should be about 75 in the day and no lower than 65 at night. All of the Selenicereus and their hybrids have a much higher sugar content than the more common Hylocereus Dragon fruits. The Yellow Selenicereus and Desert King, the cross between Selenicereus megalanthus and Hylocereus costaricensis, are my favorites.

There are several different genus and a few different species of cacti that fall into the Dragon Fruit group. Some are much better than others for eating. One of my goals in collecting is to create some new forms by crossing different types. There is a lot of this work going on in Israel and they have come up with some interesting plants.

I have been growing my own yellow dragon fruit and I have a couple oddities, one seedling has 3 leaves instead of 2, it’s like one of the leaves split and grew into two separate leaves, another seedling has a bright red pimple on it... very weird
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 лет назад
Three leaves instead of two isn't too unusual. I have seen that on a number of different plants in the past. As for the red pimple. I have no idea.

The red pimple Is a fungal attack apparently, that’s too bad. Guess I’ll have to excise the lesion & quarantine the little guy.
@GreenGardenGuy1

@@komreed I've never seen this before. You might consider a fungicide like copper if you are sure it is fungal related. Otherwise I have little mercy on defective plants and usually destroy them rather than risk spreading an infection. Others are often much kinder than I am though.

The only sensible answer I can offer is deal with well know and reputable sources. The Selenicereus megalanthus does have a different look than the Hylocereus but that is a complicated discussion. If you are working with good nursery folks you should not have to worry. Even i can't tell the difference between Yellow, Frankie's red and Desert King if I mix them up.

@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
I have dragon fruit around that is 6 months old from a seed, several years old from cuttings and the plants in ground are about 6 years old from seeds. From a cutting the take about 18 months to bear. From seed they take more like 24 to 36 months. The Yellow and Orange Selenicereus types are much earlier to make fruit than the Red and Pink Hylocereus types. Eastern Hawaiian weather makes plants grow about as fast ans any environment on earth. Depending where you live you may not find the same growth rate.

Greengardenguy1 I've watch your first video . I went out and bought the yellow dragon but unfortunately it didn't do so well in Southern California . Any advise?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 лет назад
+Dong Nguyen The temperature range in S. CA should be acceptable to the Dragon fruit so we can assume your problem isn't due to the cold. I often have cold weather problems with them in N. CA. There are other possible reason for culture problems like too much sun and sun burn in CA. Pollination can be an issue since most of the bees have vanished. Fertilizer and soil conditions can also be an issue. When you say the plants aren't doing well could you be more specific about the nature of the problem? I can be more specific in answering that way. It is a growth problem, a fruiting issue, sun burn, frost?
@dongnguyen4726
@dongnguyen4726 8 лет назад
+GreenGardenGuy1 My plants are not as big and it's yellowish .It yielded 1fruit in the first year and started wilting. Bill, Can you recommend some fertilizer because SoCal got nothing but sand.i went to the home-depot and got the palms and cactus fertilizer mix last year.No improvement in the condition of the DF plants. I'm clueless. I planted the DF on the east wall.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 лет назад
+Dong Nguyen The east wall is fine. That is probably the best exposure for California. I would suggest doing some soil testing. I would focus on the pH range. For good dragon fruit you want the soil between pH 6 & 7. You might be higher than that. The other issue is the sand. Despite the fact that this is a cactus it isn't from a desert. It grows on palm trees in the humid tropics of the Central America. Because it is a tree climbing cactus I have found that foliage feeding with a liquid food helps a lot. IF you are looking for a good ready to use fertilizer I suggest using an organic citrus food. In Hawaii I feed with calcium carbonate, borax, Epsom salts and chicken manure. In California the epsom salt and chicken manure would be good, the Lime and Borax may not.

Dragon fruits are Cereus cacti so they flower like one. The flowers on Selenicereus, Hylocereus and Trichocereus are all about the same. I have a video on youtube with Dragon Fruit Flowers, check it out. Look up greengardenguy1/Dragon Fruit Flowers and off season fruit.
@smokeydabeecharlescoleman8365
@smokeydabeecharlescoleman8365 7 лет назад
I did that before I asked. I have been a sub for some time. The possible Hybrid I'm referring to is with a Peruvian Apple. Looks like a large passion fruit. The flowers on this (DRAGONFRUIT?) look like Peruvian Apple blossoms. The stem is smooth, and not Scaly looking looking like every dragon fruit i have ever seen.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
I have grown Trichocereus peruvianus (Peruvian Apple) and both of the common dragon fruit genus Selenicereus and Hylocereus. All of these have flowers that show scales along the flower trumpet. To confirm my memory I did an image search and the flowers are all about the same on all these plants. Differences are minor. If you have a plant with smooth flowers it is most likely an mutation not a hybrid.

I've never seen your variety of dragon fruit in person, only the big pink ones with the white inside. Why do you grow the yellow one and not the big pink one?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
I actually do grow the red and pink forms of Hylocereus undatus. The main reason I am hot on the yellow fruit, Selenicereus megalanthus is the flavor. The red and pink fruit don't even come close to the quality of the yellow and orange types. I also grow a cross between the yellow and a purple fleshed fruit that is wonderful.
@GreenGardenGuy1

Neato... So I am trying to get it going from a little shoot. I was surprised that it was a fruiting plant. I totally want to eat one now.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
Those little grafted cacti are spliced to the top of a piece of Hylocereus undatus. This is the Dragon Fruit cactus. There is no telling if the one you have is a good fruit bearing type but it is dragon fruit. If you are wanting to cultivate this plant I would suggest locating material from a source that is known for fruit quality. We have quite a few Hylocereus growing wild here in Hawaii because they are self incompatible and can not pollinate. The cultivar you start with is important.
@codemiesterbeats
@codemiesterbeats 7 лет назад
Dully noted. I was reading there were many sub sets. Its probably not a fruiting type. I'll try and save it anyway lol who knows maybe it'll surprise me. I saw a guy online who sells cutting of many types. I might try one of those out sometime.

Dragon fruit can only be grown in zone 7 with the aid of a heated green house. It is a tropical cactus. What you friend has could be hundreds of different plants and from the description I can't really help you. Photos are required if you wish for me to ID it. Since she is in 7 and the plant grows there some one in a good nursery around your area should be able to ID the plant quite easily. With good photos I can do if for you too.

I finally found yellow dragon fruit for sale here in NC. You described it correctly when you compared it to honey. However, I felt the flavor was lacking in complexity. I have eaten DF that was not as sweet but had hints of grape, lemon, and other flavors. While eating the yellow DF, I found myself wishing the fruit was slightly less sweet and a little more interesting. Oh well, to each his own.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 6 лет назад
I agree the fruit lacks complexity but I haven't run across any other the other hints you describe in the red or pink types. I describe them as unripe watermelon. This includes picking them ripe from the vine rather than having them shipped to market. I am just kidding but are you sure these other qualities didn't occur due to storing the fruit with grapes and lemons? The Desert King hybrid between Costa Rican dragon fruit and the yellow has the most complex flavor of any I have tried. The red flesh has a plum like quality.

GreenGardenGuy1 Greetings! I am quite sure that the other flavors were not absorbed during storage. I grow potted DF here in NC, so I pick my own homegrown DF when possible. I sell the seeds and they are fresh because I renew them twice each year from my crop. You can contact me at my email for seeds. greengardenservice@yahoo.com The seed has certain requirements for germination. They should not be buried under the soil because they enjoy some light for germination. Since they are on the surface using saran over the top of the pot helps but if you do then keep them out of direct sun so the seeds do not cook.

@GreenGardenGuy1 6 лет назад
Sorry but you asked a question about whether you are still able to grow here but you didn't state where here is. You mentioned England but I believe that was your seed source not your location. We get rain year round here too. Humid areas are best for dragon fruit. They are not desert plants, they are epiphytes from tropical rain forests. You asked if you were able to grow the plant indoors. That would depend on your skill level. I would use a greenhouse because the plant is too large and thorny to be a house plant.
@Sniker786
@Sniker786 6 лет назад
GreenGardenGuy1 England, UK the location. Right okay, I have a large garden area with green land, where I could move the plants go once theyve started sprouting. I'm a first time grower, how many seeds would you recommend as a starter?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 6 лет назад
I never save seeds unless I plan to sell them or the amount I purchased is far more than I can use. I would plant them all. One for the gardener, one for the bugs and one for the weather. You will require a greenhouse to grow this crop in England. I raised the plant in The San Francisco Bay area of California and found it needed shelter in the winter there. The California climate is generally milder than England. Hawaii is the only place I have raised the plant that it is fully hardy out doors

+Dorotea-chan Vukanovic You can grow any form of the Dragon Fruit from either cut pieces of stem or from seeds. A few of the more modern crosses like Desert King may produce genetic variations from seeds but will still produce good plants. I usually just bury a piece of the stem in a pot of soil and let it root. Make sure to let the cut end of the stem dry a few days before planting. My nails are huge because I finger pick guitar with them. I gave up using a pick decades ago. The sight often bothers people who do not finger pick but the sound of my music relies on the contact between skin and nail. Sorry if it freaks you out.

I just got three young plants, but how does one know Yellow from red or pink? I am talking the plant.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
There are some characteristics of the plant that to the trained eye might tell what type they are. This would require someone who knows the difference actually inspect the plants. For most of us, we know the color of the fruit either because they were labeled or because they had fruited once in your presence.

Got you, i have 5 young plants the man with exotic fruit farm told me they could be yellow or pink types. But i will try to grow them in my area which is a sugar cane region. Is that Jamaican passion fruit you talk of from Jamaica? or its just the name they gave it? Bless
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
Passiflora laurifolia is native to most of tropical America but it appears to have reached Hawaii from Jamaica so that is what we call it here. Actually the full local name is Jamaican Lilikoi.

does it taste better than the pink/white flesh dragon fruit
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
Yes by a mile. I always thought the red and pink types tasted a bit like unripe watermelon. A friend of mine was one of the first farmers in Hawaii to grow the red type. I have eaten them right off the field when dead ripe, they do not taste any better that way either. When I complained about the quality one day he took me to the back row of the farm were he had what he called "Daddy's secret stash". There were three plants of the Selenicereus megalanthus that I show in this video. We tasted them on the spot and I was a convert to the yellow immediately. The plants I grow today all came from seed I got from his fruit. If you are interested I have lots of fresh seed. I also have plants but they are for local sale only. The USDA won't allow cactus plants to leave the Island, seed is fine though.

Where is the orange selenicereus megalanthus that you grow?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 5 лет назад
I am pretty sure the cactus is selenicereus but it isn't megalanthus. It is either a separate species or a hybrid. I am still uncertain. The orange dragon fruit is on the same posts with my yellow. Yellow on the back of the post and orange on the ocean side. They share. I frequently plant more than one variety on a post for space saving.

@samn106 5 лет назад
@@GreenGardenGuy1 in the other video with the orange cross hybrid you mentioned there is a selenicereus megalanthus yellow and orange variety and they both have white flesh. Im refering to the orange selenicereus megalanthus with the white flesh. Also you mentioned desert king. Do you have videos of those varieties? I would like to get a visual of what the orange megalanthus and the desert king and also a taste comparison between the mystery orange with red flesh you did a video on.

Did you sell your house in Bay Area, now permanently residing in Hawaii?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 лет назад
+Crouton That day is approaching but for right now I am just on the Island to relax a bit, plant stuff and pull weeds. The house in CA will hit the market by this spring I hope. I still have work to do there. Nothing in my life is permanent but I do plan on retiring here in HI.

Here in Hawaii I sell rooted Dragon fruit plants of 6 different varieties. The USDA will not allow cactus to be shipped off of Hawaii so to anywhere else I sell the seeds instead.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 лет назад
Yes if you are local here in the Islands and you don't mind that they are rooted in containers. It is the wrong time of year to prune the plants so the only cuttings I have to offer are rooted.

I have dozens of different dragon fruit types here. The best ones are either full Selenicereus megalanthus or they are crosses with S. meg. The crosses with red fleshed Hylocereus can be some of the best. The red pigment adds some character to the flavor. I can ship seeds for this plant anywhere but live cactus cuttings can only be shipped to Hawaii and St Thomas. I just had some of the Ecuadoran type of yellow shipped here from California so you can find these on the mainland. I sold hundreds of yellow plants when i lived in CA.

I am afraid the only way you can try my fruit is to buy it direct from the field while on vacation in HI. The USDA won't let any fruit other than pineapples leave this island without being irradiated first. You have to eat here and take home only the memory. Bill

Thank you for invitation!:) That is in my "Bucket list" for sure! You mentioned in video that you have cuttings/plants and seeds for sell. They also con not leave HI? Can you plant PAWPAW on the HI? If it is not native plant it will be under restriction? I got some seeds, perhaps will germinate them and after 3-5 yer maybe will be blessed with fruit:))))) Hopefully I will get across this fruit earlier then 5 yer:) Sorry for funny spelling, English not my native. Love your video!

I ship seeds from Hawaii to other states in the USA. I used to ship seeds to international destinations but it got to be too much trouble for me. The plants and cuttings I grow here get sold here locally on the Islands. I do wholesale orders of plants to the Mainland USA but only for 100 of a single plant or more. There are no laws excluding the Pawpaw from Hawaii. Mostly it is a climatic issue. Pawpaws are temperate climate plants and Hawaii is a tropical environment. The tree will grow better in the other 48 states than it does here. I never concern myself with how long it takes something to flower and fruit. Focusing on how short our life span lasts is a sure way to die young. I intend to out last many of the trees I plant, not the other way around.

I sell plants here on the Island but can't ship cacti to the mainland. I do sell the seeds though. Use my email for more info, greengardenservice@yahoo.com I agree that most of the dragon fruit available in the markets leaves much to be desired. There are dragon fruits that are wonderful but all of them have thorns and seldom make the market.
