Just upgraded to the new 2016 Toyota Prius from the second generation 2009 version of the Prius absolutely love it still and saving tons of money on petrol here in the united states great video thanks for enlightening others to the future of motoring.
Nice video Bob, and i agree it is super car, i remember when you reviewed the Auris hybrid (which is the car that i own myself) things have come a long way in the last few years....nice..
Great job Bob! Very honest review. "Respect!" "Amazing feat of engineering" Very well put Bob. A 1.8 petrol that does 4.6l/100km, the same as my 1.4 diesel is something that deserves the praise you gave it. Respect.Job well done Bob. Keep them coming! Regards from Portugal
For a modern car, this car actually has exciting style on the outside. I get some people thinks it's ugly; fine. I see sexy, bitchin' car that took risks that paid off. The back end rocks. The taillights are fantastic with the 'zig-zag' laser lines, especially lit up at night. The real frosting on the cake are the tail fins. Gentle, tasteful, but honest to goodness fins. It shows how a supposed bygone era styling feature can be updated and adopted in a state of the art new car. By the way, the new Hyundai Genesis may not have tail fins, but they sure have new taillights definitely inspired by the '59 Chevy 'cats eye' or horizontal teardrop lenses. Extremely close in looks. Too bad Chevy didn't think of adopting them again in a new way. The new Hyundai's shimmering tail lights hypnotize me just like the '59s once did when I was a kid and they were up ahead in the distance. Very sexy.
Great review. I test drove the Toyota Prius two weeks ago and echo your statements regarding the car - it had amazing tech and I even liked the looks :). But my wife thought it was one of the ugliest cars she had seen in a long time.
Hi bob, Firstly let me congratulate you on a fantastic review and I mean fantastic. I am thinking about one of these and have looked at so many reviews and it is yours that I think has swayed me! It has just been given the what car 2017 safest car in class also! I would like you to advise me what mpg I might hope to get. My daily commute will be 1 mile town, 13 mile A road at 60mph, followed by 1 mile in town. What do you think I might get? Thanks again 👍🏻
I know what you mean about looks bob, from the side its not a bad looker the front however to me it looks like a big grin with a squint was drawn on by a 5 year old when dad wasn't looking, anyway... will the toyota Prime (plug in) be available bob for the UK ? any news about battery type as I read somewhere we will still be getting the old nihm batterys. also will you be reviewing/taking a quick spin of it, saying that if you like this I think you'll like the new opal ampera if it ever gets here, my friends new volt was great ride from the airport as it has the same pickup and go, if a little small in the back but will really have toyota shaking in there sock
Great review again Bob. Why, Oh why dont they put a Hybrid into an Avensis. (Lexus IS300h a bit too expensive ATM) Camry Hybrids are the Yellow Taxis in NYC, taxi lads told us that they use about 1/5th as the Crown Victoria's
Hi, great video I’ve got a question, hopefully you can answer. Most cars don’t come with a spare wheel these days, has this Prius got room under the boot to keep one ? Thanks Roy
Hey Roy! I don't think there's a space in the Prius for a spare, I'm not sure there was ever a space in the designs. The batteries actually take up a lot of room under the floor so I doubt there's any room there either. It might be best to head into a dealer for an inspection of the boot space but I suspect you're out of luck. Sorry
Very nice review, the author is honest and down to what count's! Just a bought a 2017 Prius, and as ugly as they are, they are one of the nicest piece of engineering (One can afford) on the street today....and that's what make this car a beauty!
Hey Bob!! I got a friend who works for a taxi company, and they have quite a few Gen 3 Prius's. He's just told me they won't be buying the Gen 4 model because the boot is smaller than the previous model. Don't suppose it'd be possible to do a comparison? Love your videos!!
I believe the cargo space has increased a bit with the new Prius compared to the 2015 model. The Prius + is bigger still but it is still the Gen 3 power train.
I like interior + front and back of this car....sideways looks...kind of ordinary... I think Ill visit Toyota dealer and treat myself with a test drive, at least for a few miles down the road. Thanks Bob for review.
I don't know if i have misunderstood something, but isn't this drivetrain also available in the Auris? Where I live the price between the two cars is really huge so the Prius sadly doesn't make any sense.
The Auris has the gen. 3 drivetrain. The new Prius is the first withthe new one. Keep in mind, that the aerodynamics in the prius is a little better, while the Auris is a tiny bit lighter. So the Auris is better in urban area, the Prius is better on the highway.
Battery failures have been rare in the Prius. Consumer Reports estimates 4% after 11 years and 5% after 12. In fact the Prius has better power train reliability than any other compact and that includes battery failures (based on stats on over 1M US trade-ins). You are more likely to need to replace your fancy double clutch transmission in a conventional car.
I hear that the batterys in most EVs are very long lasting which has upset industrial facilities that thought they were going to get lots of cheap batteries to store energy.
Seems like a much better car than the old one, its a shame the prius got so much hate because it was a quite revolutionary piece of engineering especially when is came out in 1998. My big question is Bob would you by one?
4.9 ltr per 100km I drive a VW Touareg drove it from Galway out to Connemara today got 6.3 ltr per 100km think I'll stay with my nearly 2.5 ton permanent four wheel jeep
It's the shape I can't get on with, the front I could live with but the back is awful. At this point it's suppose to be a "feature" can't imagine it's there for drag reduction anymore. Although I do get what you are saying could see it as a 2nd car. (back and too to work) shame the infrastructure is still not quiet there yet. (Suburban UK)
You're right like always Bob! And most US are getting 60MPG which is Exceptional fuel mileage! But, like always if you drive like an idiot. I like the looks they don't offend. If the tires are big enough for snow? Hmm. Great review!
thank you for a relaxing informative clip..do like powerful cars..had a 4 speed corvette convertible in 1973 just as the oil crisis struck ..gasoline was .50 cents per imperial gallon..the U.S.gallon is approximately 20% smaller than imperial gallon...am almost finished my 4 year lease on 2012 touring prius..only have 31,000 km.here in montreal the streets have so many potholes in the roadways that the 17 inch touring wheels with low profile tires let you feel every bump and hole in the roadway.when tires wear out ,will put higher aspect size on to have more air to cushion the bumps..i prefer the 2012 rear side window design versus the new one because they eliminate the small rear side window after the door..my 2012 is noisy as they really skimped on the sound deadening on floor and firewall..but i get great mileage..4.2 to 4.5 in summer..[best ever was 3.7 with careful attention to acceleration ].about 5.5 to 6.1 in our brutal winters...radio is weak..the 2016 is supposed to have better sound..radio noise is such that i have to turn up the volume a lot at 100 km.am thinking of buying the car at lease end and keeping for another 4 years..i like the new front end but prefer the side and rear of my 2012..glad to hear that they refined the car..new it was 32,00$canadian plus taxes of 15%..to buy it at lease end is 13,500 plus taxes of 15%..for 4 years i paid lease of 417$ cad including tax totaling 20,016$ cad.my ancestors came from dublin a hundred years ago..hope to visit you in the future !
It looks just fine, no problem there. But I will never ever own a vehicle with a center mounted gauge cluster. I have driven in a car that had one and I can't stand it.
+SnazzBot I have driven them, not in video though. I'm not sure Tesla needs any more press than Elon already gets them. For the next five years Hybrid is a better solution for most people.
+SnazzBot Yep! Chevy Bolt will be coming to the market almost a year before Model 3. If it's actually any good that time could make a world of difference.
From the front, it looks like some sort of space alien. Also, a US gallon is 80% of an Imperial gallon. Mathematicals aren't one of my strong suits but, with a face like this...
+Bob Flavin you said Bob just about how we use UK mpg in Ireland .Just banter Bob.I think your vids are great though.Be great if you showed more of the inside of the cars in upcoming videos like you have in this one.
Sorry Bob, can't do the fuel conversion this early on a Sunday. Plus, this car comes in several styles across the pond, one more uglier than the next. I agree with you that the world needs these cars, if only to placate the tree hugging hippies to leave us alone with our V8's.
What?! Now way!! Haahahah small world isn't it? Thanks for the Prius review! Im fifteen and I started my permit so I will be getting a car pretty soon. I really want a white little Prius! Its a great car in my opinion!
Whilst I admire the technology of the Prius and what it means for the future of mass transportation, why oh why do they have to make it so unbelievably ugly. Seriously, this is absolutely hideous. You'd have to be desperate to have the hybrid technology to want one.
+Jonathon Churchill Electric cars are pointless unless you can charge them, there's petrol stations everywhere even in the darkest corners of the globe. EV cars are for the very few people who live in cities
+Bob Flavin fair enough. Plug in hybrids then 😜 am surprised toyota havent made much of an effort with plug in hybrids. 6 mile range in a prius.... Really.........
it "may" be as you say an "amazing feat of engineering" bobby boy, but as your mammy used to say, bobby boy, yee cant polish a turd, and boy, THAT Toyota LOOKS like a turd ! Toyota`s engineering skill cant be ignored, but bobby boy, they cant make a good looking battery car.................................yet !
